Hoping That It Won’t Work

Here's a transcript of Daily Show host Jon Stewart interviewing former Clinton aide Nancy Soderberg:

Soderberg: The truth always helps in these things, I have to say. But I think that there is also going on in the Middle East peace process--they may well have a chance to do a historic deal with the Palestinians and the Israelis. These guys could really pull off a whole--

Stewart: This could be unbelievable!

Soderberg:---series of Nobel Peace Prizes here, which--it may well work. I think that, um, it's--

Stewart: [buries head in hands] Oh my God! [audience laughter] He's got, you know, here's--

Soderberg: It's scary for Democrats, I have to say.

Stewart: He's gonna be a great--pretty soon, Republicans are gonna be like, "Reagan was nothing compared to this guy." Like, my kid's gonna go to a high school named after him, I just know it.

Soderberg: Well, there's still Iran and North Korea, don't forget. There's hope for the rest of us.

Stewart: [crossing fingers] Iran and North Korea, that's true, that is true [audience laughter]. No, it's--it is--I absolutely agree with you, this is--this is the most difficult thing for me to--because, I think, I don't care for the tactics, I don't care for this, the weird arrogance, the setting up. But I gotta say, I haven't seen results like this ever in that region.

Soderberg: Well wait. It hasn't actually gotten very far. I mean, we've had--

Stewart: Oh, I'm shallow! I'm very shallow!

Soderberg: There's always hope that this might not work. No, but I think, um, it's--you know, you have changes going on in Egypt; Saudi Arabia finally had a few votes, although women couldn't participate. What's going on here in--you know, Syria's been living in the 1960s since the 1960s--it's, part of this is--

Stewart: You mean free love and that kind of stuff? [audience laughter] Like, free love, drugs?

Soderberg: If you're a terrorist, yeah.

So here are two leftists tacitly acknowledging that there has been significant progress in the middle east, something they respond to by hoping that it "might not work" or that something bad happens in Iran or North Korea to offset the success that can be credited largely to the Bush administration.

Who's side are these people on?

I really can't think of anything more disgusting then people rooting against the progress of democracy in the world for the sole purpose of political gain.

Despicable. I can’t watch Jon Stewart any more, and I watch a lot of people that I really don’t care for, but he’s just like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Or, more accurately, for the sole purpose of America not going completely to shit because of policies that were legitimized by success in the Middle East.  Ever thought that there are people out there who have good reasons for opposing Bush and his actions, and don’t do it simply for “political gain”?

Personally, I’d be willing to go through the Middle East completely rejecting our plans for them if it meant that my own nation wouldn’t consider the Patriot Act, the privatization of Social Security, No Child Left Behind, and the various other inane and self-destructive policies of the Bush administration to be good ideas by association with the only plan that they’ve had in the past four years that might have actually worked.  (And even that would be a miracle, considering our past track record in nation building as well as the remarkable way in which we botched up the plan’s execution.)

I think people are able to deal with policies on an individual basis.  I’m all for the war on terror and all for a revamp of Social Security, but I’m against No Child Left Behind as well as against a lot of the Patriot Act.

How much of a partisan fool would you have to be to oppose progress in the middle east lest it reflect well on someone whose other policies you oppose?

Rob, no one here is trying to say that the Bush administration is right in all matters just because they’ve had some success in the middle east.  Heck, more than once I’ve wanted to strangle them over the whole Medicare thing.

All I’m saying is that he has had some success and that a lot of people on the left are having a hard time acknowledging that.  The fact that some of them would even go so far as to root against progress in the middle east is, in my opinion, rather disgusting.

I wish Taranto at Opinion Journal would have included details about just WHO Soderberg is.

She was on the staff of Senator Kennedy before joining the Clinton Gore Administration. As number 3 on the staff of the National Security Council, she was at Clinton’s right hand during much of the malfeasance we witnessed during that time.

When she remarks about something going wrong in North Korea, she ought to know. Sec. Albright and Soderberg were among the cabal of America apologists that thought they could buy good will from Kim Jong Il… Didn’t work DID IT!

Now, Bush is cleaning up the mess these people made and all they can do is hope he does not succeed…

Very sad… Politics used to stop at the water’s edge… But power and personal bitterness seems to be more important to these folks than their own nation’s success in making the world a freer, more peaceful place.

Unfortunately, Rob, you cannot produce evidence of that success you claim.

Well, I couldn’t find enough evidence to convince the likes of you.  But then, I’m not too worried about that.

Unfortunately, Rob, you cannot produce evidence of that success you claim.

Certainly, you can point to anecdotes like a woman being named a Governor in Afghanistan or some whackjob saying Bush has transformed Lebanon.

OTOH, you ignore a warlord and former Soviet quisling has been placed in charge of Afghanistan’s military or the fact Iraq’s leaders are very, very sympathetic to Iran and the idea of establishing an Islamic Republic.

I don’t know what your definition of ‘success’ is, but generally it’s defined as achieving, or exceeding, objectives and goals.  If we look at AWOL eorge’s objectives and goals going into this war--they’ve all failed miserably.

I thought I already explained pretty well that I’m not being partisan, nor do I oppose Bush merely because I disagree with his policies.  I disagreed with most of Reagan’s policies, but I didn’t think our country was in danger of collapsing due to his administration.  And for the record, the last President that I considered to be even approach the ineptitude of our current one was Jimmy Carter.

[...] The Daily Show isn’t really news, in any sense of the word. Lets face it--the preceeding show is about puppets who make prank phone calls. But once in a while, you hit on a diamond in the rough, as the guys at Opinion Journal did. Last night, John Steward ripped apart former Clinton aide Nancy Soderberg, who showed herself to be an absolute idealogue. The full text is available through the above link and at Say Anything, but here are some highlights:Soderberg: The truth always helps in these things, I have to say. But I think that there is also going on in the Middle East peace process--they may well have a chance to do a historic deal with the Palestinians and the Israelis. Sure--I can’t blame Democrats for being a little hot under the collar over the apparent success of the Bush Doctrine, but to hope that it might fail yet? Hang on! No matter what end of the sidewalk you occupy, democracy in the Middle East is beneficial to everybody. Its just plain stupid to dream of good things coming to an end.Nancy, even I can admit Bill Clinton was a smart guy. Doesn’t make me a Democrat--no way, no how. But I can be happy for him.Not his wife though. She scares me. [...]
