Hillary Clinton Fires Strategist Over Work On Free Trade Agreement With Colombia

Mark Penn is gone because he dared support a free trade agreement with our allies in Colombia.

Mark Penn, the pollster and senior strategist for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential bid, left the campaign Sunday after it was disclosed he met with representatives of the Colombian government to help promote a free trade agreement Clinton opposes.

“After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as chief strategist of the Clinton Campaign,” campaign manager Maggie Williams said in a statement released Sunday. “Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign.”

Communications director Howard Wolfson and pollster Geoff Garin will craft strategy for the campaign going forward, Williams said.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Penn, who serves as chief executive of public relations giant Burson-Marsteller, met with Colombian officials March 31 to help craft strategy to move the Colombian Free Trade agreement through Congress. Penn later issued a statement apologizing for the meeting, calling it an “error in judgment.”

“Senator Clinton was disappointed that meetings with Colombians had occurred. She is a strong opponent of the trade deal,” said a Clinton campaign officials speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not given authority to speak publicly. “Over the course of the weekend he recognized he needed to step aside as chief strategist.”

The current leadership in Colombia, under Alvaro Uribe, has been one of our most consistent allies in South America.  One of the two Democrat contenders for President is firing people for working on a treaty with Colombia.

Is this how Democrats plan to rebuild America’s image in the word?

That is an opinion from one view, I wonder what the other party would say…

Put that one in the “they eat their own young” file.

Are we seeing the opening gambit in a “Lets placate Hugo Chavez/Venezuela” strategy?  After all, Hugo has already expressed a desire to see the good old Clinton days.

They would to see a Ortega, Chavez, or Castro-like leader in Colombia. These are the leaders whose opinion they can respect.

Another reason to believe that, if either Hillary or Hussein gets the big job, he or she will make W look like Winston Churchill.

Campaigning is not supposed to be this hard--witness Bush/Rove.  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that both of these mutts are so seriously flawed even Rove couldn’t get them elected. ya think?

Shouldn’t we be working toward a “FAIR” trade agreement, not a Free?  Under so-called free trade it usually means free for the foreign countries for goods coming in the USA, and stiff tariffs on our goods entering their ports. Is it any wonder why the trade balance is tilted off?
