Now wait just a cotton pickin’ minute! I heard that some cotton pickin’ pinhead might fire this guy just for using a cotton pickin’ idiom???

If this is true, this is political correctness on steroids! As a native Son of the South, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used the phrase “cotton pickin’”, and to my knowledge, none of them were even remotely racial. There have been a lot of us Persons of Pallor picking cotton. This is a tempest in a teapot. A cotton pickin’ teapot, I tell ya! Sheesh!

    Here's a clue for you, clueless trolls: "Cotton picking" is a very mild epithet that can be uttered in mixed company. Where Sparkie might say (quite accurately) "I'll be d@mned!"or I'll be g*d-d@mned", a Southerner might say, "Well I'll be a cotton picker!" Sometimes when the word, "d@mn" might be appropriate, we just say , "Cotton pickin'!" No racial tinge. No racism overt or covert. So if I was to put up pictures of all the white folks in my family still alive today that had picked cotton, by hand, it would be about 132 people.

    As an African American, I would probably be offended if someone of another ethnicity said that to me. But just like anything else, it depends on the context. I read somewhere that both whites and blacks picked cotton in the south. So, I wouldn't think much of the phrase if a white person said it to another white person or a black person said it to another black person. But it would be racially insensitive for a white person to say it to a black person (since African-Americans were considered inferior to whites back then).

    Also, just so you know the phrase "the ghetto blacks" can be taken as offensive. I don't think you meant any harm by it, but it sounds like you're suggesting that every "ghetto" person is black. Not only is that assumption wrong, but the use of the word is incorrect as well. "Ghetto" is an impoverished section of a city/a thickly populated slum area.     In the USA, every time I've heard the word "ghetto", it's been a derogatory term, referring to African-Americans/black people. It's just as bad as referring to a white person as "trailer trash" or something along those lines. It’s just not right.     After explanations were given, I was escorted out of the store by security, and told not to shop there for a month or more.

      There was never a time when people of both white and black races didn't pick cotton, the hands would get blistered, bleed, form callouses and get very dirty.     I think that people tend to get too cotton %$#ing sensitive at times. I'm from the Midwest, and have heard many people say this word over the years, and never with a racist connotation.

    During the first season of the television show Different Strokes, the African American character Arnold exclaims to his brother Willis, "Are you out of your cotton ^&%$ing mind??!!" The show was rather progressive for it's time, and it is quite obvious that cotton &^%$ing was not meant to have any racial connotations.
