Here’s A Twist: NRA Sues San Francisco On Behalf Of A Gay Man Who Wants To Keep A Gun

I just don’t know where to start with this one:

(06-27) 18:34 PDT SAN FRANCISCO—A day after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a constitutional right to possess guns for self-defense, the National Rifle Association sued San Francisco and its Housing Authority for banning firearms in the authority’s public housing.

The NRA filed in federal court Friday on behalf of an unidentified gay man living in Valencia Gardens Housing in the Mission District, who said he keeps a gun in his home for protection against hate crimes even though his Housing Authority lease forbids possession of guns and other weapons.

There’s comedy gold here, folks, not to mention irony galore. A gay man using a right wing organization to sue a left wing city that rabidly supports gay causes because said left wing city won’t allow him to protect himself from alleged right wing “hate crimes” against him because he’s a gay man. Oooh. That’s GOOD.

And San Francisco’s reaction to the suit? More comedy gold:

“To the NRA, we just say, ‘Stay away. ... Let us protect our citizens,’ “ Newsom said. He also said the gun organization should direct some of its attention to the Bush administration, since the federal government approves Housing Authority leases.

Will the NRA become the left’s thorn-in-the-side equivalent of the ACLU? Sure is beginning to look like it.

Heh.

Guns are not a gay/straight issue. Gays have been standing up for their right to bear arms for some time now.

There are now over 45 Pink Pistols chapters nationwide

Excuse me, you were saying?

Wow, it’s pretty disgusting that you made this into a gay/straight issue. I didn’t realize that gays had no place in your Republican party.

I didn’t make this into a “gay/straight” issue. You did.

I pointed out the irony of the left/right philosophies becoming tangled over the gun rights issue.

Read it again, Hairy. Or get someone to explain it to you.

You imputed gayness to the left wing and hate crimes to the right wing. So gays can only be liberals and haters of gays can only be conservatives? Nope, you’re not ignorant at all.

Wow, Hairy, lay off the hair trigger.  You don’t need to work at getting outraged.

I’m pretty sure Pilgrim’s intent here is to show that, despite liberal assumptions to the contrary, many of us right wingers think gays should be able to protect themselves from those who would do them harm the same as straights.

That’s certainly what I got from his post.

He said “a left-wing city that rabidly supports gay causes.” He didn’t say that the gay causes were inherently left-wing, though certainly they tend to be predominantly supported by left wingers.

There’s nothing wrong with this post.  I think you got up on the wrong side of the bed.

Give it a rest, Hairy, and get a sense of humor. And a clue.

I think it is pure comedy gold when a commenter unintentionally shows his bigotry.

Lestat, could you please show how Pilgrim, who has in the past stated unequivocally that he thinks gay people should be able to live as freely as straight people do, has in any way proven himself to be a bigot in this post?

I wouldn’t call it bigotry, but definitely ignorance. Here’s how:

not to mention irony galore

What does Pilgrim find ironic?

A gay man using a right wing organization to sue a left wing city

Wouldn’t be very ironic unless gays were exclusively left wing.

English. Scalia isn’t the only one who can read apparently.

in any way proven himself to be a bigot in this post?

Is bigotry, in and of itself, always bad? Bigotry: somebody with strong opinions, especially on politics, religion, or ethnicity, who refuses to accept different views. If one believes they are right about an issue, like Conservative Small Government, is being bigoted in favor of small government wrong?

I am not talking at all about Pilgrim or his comments above, only asking why bigotry is always used as a negative.

The Irony is that the city of San Francisco which is rabidly gay doesn’t want a gay person to be able to defend himself against supposedly right-wing hate crimes.

(Of course there is nothing on the conservative side that encourages gay bashing.  But that’s besides the point.)

Lestat,

As Rob pointed out above, I’ve stated often right in this very forum that I don’t care how people live. It’s nobody’s business but theirs. I’ve even drewn fire from my fellow conservatives about my views in that area.

Just a couple of weeks ago I wrote a piece about the two elderly lesbians who had been together 55 years and now they can get married and I basically said, good for them.

Odd stance for a bigot to take, wouldn’t you say?

It’s fairly amusing that the lefties would see bigotry in this post.

And as far as whether or not the man who filed the suit was on the left or right...let’s see: Gay, lives in public housing in San Francisco....gee, I wonder which way he votes?

Just guessing.

If you on the left want to see bigotry you don’t have to look any farther than your own mirrors.

So you make an exception for people who have lived together for 55 years.  BFD

Alright, I get the moral high ground since I actually *LIVE* in SF.  smile

Hairy: Come on!  It IS fairly funny.  And even if all gays are not Dems/Statists, we can be fairly sure that the vast majority of EVERYONE in SF is a Dem/Statist.

Sure...Pilgrim could have been more sensitive.  But...well...frak that!  We spend way too much energy tip-toeing around and trying not to hurt feelings.  It IS funny that the NRA gets to defend a gay man living in public housing.  Instead of taking the “hurt feelings” route, give Pilgrim some clever verbal abuse if you want to get him to change his ways.  Don’t cry on the playground...fight back!

“Gay”, “public housing dweller” and “San Franciscan” are all Dem/Statist.  NRA is about as Repub/Individualist as you can get.  It is hilarity!

Joe Libson on June 28, 2008 at 01:11 pm

You know, the great thing about being an opinionated bastard like me is that I can choose to express my opinion as I see fit.

And you, Lestat, don’t have to like it. Not sensitive enough? Tough.

Besides, like Joe says above, there’s some humor in this situation.

Like I said in the piece, the fact that the NRA may become just as much of a polar opposite pain as the ACLU is priceless in itself.

Just one fine point I would like to contend:  The NRA is NOT a Right-Wing Organization.  We are America’s oldest Civil Rights Organization.  When endorsing political candidates during elections, we choose not by the party of the candidate but instead by his commitment to uphold all of the Constitution, not just the popular part.

In the past, the NRA has chosen not to endorse Rep. Frank Wolf, (R-Va) while giving full support to Sen. Evan Bayh, (D-Ind) because of their positions on the Second Amendment.

The NRA is a bi-partisan organization the welcomes people from all sections of the political spectrum.  It is simply coincidental that we draw Constitutional Constructionists, (conservatives) while groups such as the ACLU tend to draw to their folds Constitutional Revisionists, (liberals).

PS:  Did we score big on Thursday or what?!?

The San Francisco Housing Authority might accept a less scary looking gun.

There were some lovely pink pistols in the sporting goods store I visited this afternoon. They even had a 12 gauge with a pink stock and forearm.

I decided on something more traditional - A .22 NRA Commemorative Sturm Ruger Mark II, to replace the Mark I had to sell back when I was poor!

And unlike California, here in Ohio I was treated like a citizen!  After undergoing an instant check, I tucked the pistol under my arm and left with it the same day!  God bless America!

The original cop from the Village People was fired for not being gay.

I read that on the internet so it must be true.

If a thug gets taken out by a lawfullly armed citizen I don’t give a rat’s ass if the pistol is pink or black or if the lawfully armed citezen who had to defend themselves are gay or straight.

Same results.

I guess a gay guy shouldn’t ask that person in the video “Is that a Glock in your pants or are you just glad to see me?”
