Here We Go Again: Obama Says There’s “No Time For Delay” In Going After Credit Cards

The last time Obama said that he and his fellow liberals were ram-rodding through an ill-advised “economic stimulus” spending spree that had goodies hidden in its never-read-before-being-voted-on pages such as the creation of a federal bureaucracy to compile and monitor our medical records.
Obama broke just about every promise he made on transparency to get the stimulus through Congress with as little debate and scrutiny as possible. He seems poised to do the same with credit card reform. Leading me to wonder what he’s hiding this time.

(CNN) — President Obama urged Congress to quickly pass a credit card reform bill so that he can sign it into law by Memorial Day.
“It is past time for rules that are fair and transparent,” the president said in his weekly radio address.
“Instead of an ‘anything goes’ approach, we need strong and reliable protections for consumers. Instead of fine print that hides the truth, we need credit card forms and statements that have plain language in plain sight, and we need to give people the tools they need to find a credit card that meets their needs. And instead of abuse that goes unpunished, we need to strengthen monitoring, enforcement, and penalties for credit card companies that take advantage of ordinary Americans,” he said.
While Americans have a responsibility to live within their means, they also have “a right to not get ripped off” by rate hikes, penalties and hidden fees, Obama said.
“You shouldn’t have to fear that any new credit card is going to come with strings attached, nor should you need a magnifying glass and a reference book to read a credit card application,” he said.

Once again, Americans are victims who are too stupid to manage their credit themselves and so need Obama the Saviour to come to their aid.
Frankly, I think Obama is exaggerating more than a little bit with all this. I’ll grant that credit card companies can be sneaky with the legalese, often hiding less-than-appealing terms in tiny legal print that’s difficult to understand once read. But it’s not that hard to call in to customer service and ask for an explanation of the terms before you sign up. And if you’re not running massive balances you can’t pay off, it’s not that hard to switch credit cards if your company is monkeying around with the terms.
Long story short, Obama isn’t looking to help anyone. He’s looking for an excuse for bigger government.

You people are some lame ass conspiracy theorist… but there is nothing I can ever say that would ever convince you to look outside your tunnel versioned worlds. I’m neither pro Obama or anit Obama, democrat nor republican. But for some reason Republicans to take the cake in their ignorance and convoluted theories of government take over strategies.

Seriously… don’t be a sheep. Credit card companies run on greed. There is no excuses to allow credit card companies to continue to rob the ignorant and uneducated. It is immoral to allow such blatant decimation. Just because you can rob these people (even though they should know better) doesn’t make it ok… ever.

So now dinothefakehomo is spewing Shari’a as the Law of the Land in America. Cool. That means dinothefakehomo will be beheaded, because that is what homosexuals are sentenced to under Shari’a.

And there is no “crisis” in credit cards. So, you minimum payment goes from $15 to $30, that is going to kill you? If you are so stupid as to pay only the minimum you are too stupid to have credit.

  • robert108

eric: As long as all transactions are voluntary and mutual, you have no case. It is only the govt that practices predatory lending, as Obama’s numerous takeovers, done in the guise of “bailouts” prove conclusively.
No one in the private sector forces anyone to borrow money.

  • http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/ goon

I don’t think half of these take overs and over regulation of big business is necessary nor might it be consitutional.

  • Bat One

Credit card companies run on greed.

So does every other type of free market company. Without the desire for profits there are no companies… and no employees either.

    Greed is good!

  • Bat One

    R108,

There is no disagreement. You know perfectly well what I meant… and why I used the phrase “greed is good” for eric’s benefit. (It was a temptation I simply couldn’t resist!)

  • FedUp

Why do I feel like BO is crying WOLF again??? I hope the people wake up and remember what happened the last time we had to ram something through!

  • robert108

Bat: I beg to differ! Wanting a fair return for your investment and labor isn’t “greed”, it’s economic justice, just like being able to keep most of what you have earned. True greed is only done by govt, which always wants more, and never earns it, except when it defends us from outside enemies and protects citizens from criminal behavior. It’s greediest when it redistributes the earnings of achievers to buy the votes of the non achievers.

  • robert108

Bat: Yes, I understand(with regards to Chauncey Gardner).

  • Dino2

So filled with bitter disappointment at the loss of republicans at the polls, you rush to defend the usory practices of credit card companies!

  • 2Hotel9

eric is simply parroting the standard socialist, ant-human shit, nothing more.

eric? If you hate credit cards and capitalism so much stop using either. And shut the fuck up, because all us real human beings are tired of listening to you cry.

I had two credit card accounts. One had horrible service and rising fees with no respect for personal privacy (surprise, surprise that Tony Blair is on the board of the shared owner of that company). I closed that account and ta da, no more dealing with their tactics. My current credit card company so far has great customer service, manageable fees and seems to be upfront about their privacy measures. That has lead me to keep this account open. Simple math.

The last person I heard talk so adversely about credit card companies after giving Americans a guilt trip for not giving to the poor (didn’t know we weren’t giving to the poor) was Bono over a large screen projection at a summer Creation Festival years ago. It was interposed during the Michael W. Smith concert. I normally don’t make impressions founded on feelings, but the image coming off the screen that night gave me the most presence-of-evil awareness I’ve ever known in my life. Only two times have I perceived that, and the next time was last summer watching a video of Tony Blair exclaiming the wonders of his faith foundation and malaria program. In my opinion, an inexplicable and identical evil from the screen(s).

The Obama administration needs to get out of the way and let companies rise and fall according to their practices. I’m not opposed to government doing their jobs in accordance with the Constitution and holding companies accountable to the law (provided that the laws are in accordance with the Constitution), but then get out of the way.

As I hear Zo similarly say in a video, “If we are smart enough to make the money, then we are smart enough to spend the money.”

    2Hotel9,

First I’m not a socialist. Anti-human??? “Hurray for me and fuck everybody else” seems to be your motto… that seems very “anti-human” to me… more selfish than anything. It’s easy to talk your smack till you get bitch slapped by a life threatening disease that robs you blind (even when you have health insurance) and you are using your credit card to stay alive. Did you know that this is the case with more than 30%+ of people that are getting slapped with these outrageous fees? There are many other scenarios like this that trap people. Regardless of what you think, the vast majority of these people are not out overspending on purpose.

Greed is good??? So what the cigarette companies did/do is good? Ever hear of Bernie Madoff? Is he a good guy? I believe in capitalism, but not at the expense of excessive greed. There has to be limitations. Credit card companies profiteering off people using their credit cards to try and save their dying child’s life is immoral. And regardless of what you think, MOST of the people that have all this credit card debt have it because of unforseen life issues like this.

NO… greed is not good. Oh yeah… so shut the fuck up right back at yah!

    The next shoe to drop…..

It’s all just pretext to grab more private enterprise for government use…..

as it was for the banks, Wall street, the automotive industry, etc…..

The purported credit-card related problems will be used as the path to justifying more $$$ for the impending commercial real estate crash……

Without moderate credit card usage, there is a direct impact on retail sales of most goods and services. Hence, sales fall, rent can’t be made by the retailers, and retail space is exceeds demand.

This is also a preview to grabbing the health care industry also…. and let’s not forget the insurance industry…… it’ll be a “Two-fer”…..

  • 2Hotel9

You are a fucking socialist, you are the fucking problem, fuck you.

  • eric

Simple people think black and white 2Hotel9. Your colorful comments, enlightening comments and idiotic ideology show exactly how you deal with things. I’m a socialist because I can see other aspects of a debate? Because I research both sides of an issue? Because I don’t blindly follow the Republican Party or Democratic Party like sheep? Because I choose to think? Nothings ever black and white, and with this issues, the lesser of two evils is to stop Credit Card companies from robbing the unfortunate and under educated for nothing more than greed.

  • 2Hotel9

Again, you are a socialist, wanting government to be in charge of your life makes you one, you stupid fucker. You are the fucking problem, and America is about at the end of its patients with you anti-human fucks.

  • eric

2Hotel9, your obvious ignorance in anything outside your small tunnel version world shines through in your “insightful” commentary. I didn’t have to give you much rope for you to hang yourself. Haters such as you are the ones that are “anti-human”. Your hate consumes you and blinds your judgment. Neanderthals such as yourself let such ignorant emotions run and ruin your lives. Your lack of tolerance and outrageous ignorance is no better than how the Taliban think. A world filled with people like you would be a horrible place to live. I feel sorry for you.

I found this forum while researching the credit card issue. I like to read up on as many perspectives as I can. Now I know why the Republican Party is dying. Unless you ditch people like 2Hotel9, I fear your numbers will continue to dwindle. America’s patience is running out on people like him (it already has started) not people like me.

I bid this forum farewell and I shall not be returning. There is nothing to learn here from people like 2Hotel9. I had hoped to gain some insight from a different perspective, but all I have found is hateful commentary backed with little to zero facts.

    You offered us nothing either.

Your leaving is no real loss.

  • 2Hotel9

Don’t go away mad, just go the fuck away, socialist fuck.

  • 2Hotel9

Oh, and SAB is not “dwindling”. Every time we drive another socialist fuck back into the street more real humans come in to replace you.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

You know what the difference between a credit card company and big government is?

I don’t have to do business with any given credit card company. That’s my choice.

If I don’t do what the government tells me, I go to jail. Or I get fined.

  • http://suitepotato.blogspot.com/ sayanything-4808

We pretty much have been out of the way of the credit companies and you’ve seen the commercials where Paul Michael Glaser tells you that the average number of credit cards in the average person’s wallet is eight. Someone has sixteen on my account of having none, but anyhow…

The credit companies have been getting away with murder. At a time when middle America’s cost of living is going up and there’s no societal encouragement to cut back but instead keep living up to the same standards as the economic good times, people charge it. They deluge people with offers for credit of several hundred to several thousand dollars, low introductory rates with fine print rocket increases to rates bordering on usury.

The mainstream media continues to show people on television living allegedly within their means but leaves their income an unstated matter of fantasy as during the last umpteen years unless you had stead pay raises, or lived on a parallel Earth, your cost of living would mean your standard was slipping a bit around the edges. Credit to the illusory rescue.

The message from the Democratic Party has always been that Big Brother will take care of you and fix all these problems one way or another. Bailouts, convenient legal loopholes, bankruptcy filings, various legal rights to settle, and so on. Out of sight out of mind has been the way of concerning themselves with the possibilities of catastrophic failure.

I sure as hell don’t trust Obama and his crew to do anything more with this than make it infinitely worse down the long years not to mention entrench government further, but the fact remains that someone needs to be done to leash in these companies and get things back to where credit had to be earned and wasn’t easy to get and was consequently not so easy to destroy by failure to pay back what you could not manage.

A society that has been exhorted to believe that they have the right to anything they want and are victims if they don’t get it thanks to decades of liberal claptrap on television is not a society to flood with easy credit offers with less readability than a calculus text book.
