Van Jones Goes Off the Deep End

Van Jones spoke at the 16th annual Mario Savio Memorial Lecture on the campus of University of California Berkeley last Wednesday evening. In the passionate lecture, Van called Republicans and those who oppose the president “treasonous” and created an allegory where they wish to let people die on a beach.

          • Neiman

No man was ever saved by works, they are performed by Christ through the lives of the saved. By grace (free gift of mercy) are ye saved, not of works of the flesh lest any man could boast that they earned their salvation.

You can do good works until the cows come home, help millions of the poorest people to be clothed and eat and live well; but, without being born again in Christ by faith – you will go to hell. It is grace alone, by faith alone, in Christ alone, works are excluded.

Your not knowing that and refusing to accept it is to your everlasting doom. You have not Christ as your life, your whole life.

            Galatians 2:15-17
            New King James Version (NKJV)

15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law
but by faith in Jesus Christ,
even we have believed in Christ Jesus,
that we might be justified by faith in Christ
            and not by the works of the law;
for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

17 “But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ,
we ourselves also are found sinners,
is Christ therefore a minister of sin?
            Certainly not!

            Galatians 3:1-3
            New King James Version (NKJV)
            Justification by Faith

            3 O foolish Galatians!
Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth,[a]
before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly
            portrayed among you[b] as crucified?

2 This only I want to learn from you:
Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law,
or by the hearing of faith?
            3 Are you so foolish?
            Having begun in the Spirit,
are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

            Galatians 3:4-6
            New King James Version (NKJV)

4 Have you suffered so many things in vain—
if indeed it was in vain?

            5 Therefore
He who supplies the Spirit to you
            and works miracles among you,
does He do it by the works of the law,
or by the hearing of faith?—

6 just as Abraham “believed God,
and it was accounted to him for righteousness

            Ephesians 2:1-3
            New King James Version (NKJV)
            By Grace Through Faith

1 And you He made alive,
who were dead in trespasses and sins,

2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

            Titus 3:4-6
            New King James Version (NKJV)

4 But when the kindness and the love of God
            our Savior toward man appeared,

5 not by works of righteousness which we have done,

but according to His mercy He saved us,
through the washing of regeneration and
            renewing of the Holy Spirit,

6 whom He poured out on us abundantly
            through Jesus Christ our Savior,

            Hebrews 9:13-15
            New King James Version (NKJV)

13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh,

14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

            Revelation 3:1-3
            New King James Version (NKJV)
            The Dead Church

3 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write,

‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God
            and the seven stars:

            “I know your works,

that you have a name that you are alive,
            but you are dead.

2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain,
that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect
            before God.[a]

            3 Remember therefore
            how you have received and heard;
            hold fast and repent.
if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief,
and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.

          • ellinas1

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25, ESV)
Jesus asked him what was written in the law, and the man responded:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your
neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27, ESV)
Pressing further, the lawyer asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?”

In parable form, Jesus told of a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho. Robbers attacked him, took his possessions and clothes, beat him, and left him half dead.

A priest came down the road, saw the injured man, and passed by him on the other side. A Levite passing by did the same.
A Samaritan, from a race hated by the Jews, saw the hurt man and
had compassion on him. He poured oil and wine on his wounds, bound them up, then put the man on his donkey. The Samaritan took him to an inn and cared for him.
The next morning, the Samaritan gave two denarii to the innkeeper for the man’s care and promised to repay him on his way back for any other expenses.
Jesus asked the lawyer which of the three men had been a
neighbor. The lawyer answered that the man who showed mercy was a neighbor.

Then Jesus told him, “You go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:37, ESV)

          • Neiman

I don’t know why I should having only received unkindness from you, but I will try one more time to reason with you.

            1. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8

Romans 9:16 “It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.”

Ephesians 2:5 “made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.”

            2. When passages seem to contradict one another, by the Holy Spirit, they must be brought into harmony, as God cannot oppose Himself or sow confusion. If your passages and belief in works/salvation contradict those by the same Lord elsewhere that demand Salvation is a gift of God obtained by grace through faith, we must seek to gain agreement.

            3. Jesus audience was the Jews, people of the Law, but was anyone saved by the Law which demands 100% perfect obedience, as God says to fail at the smallest point makes men guilty of breaking the whole Law, to say nothing of original sin. Is it therefore possible that Jesus was telling them that they must meet an impossible standard, that is perfect obedience of the law to gain salvation, pushing them towards utter defeat that giving up their own efforts they might be ready to accept His Salvation only as a gift, due to His perfect obedience on our behalf and His paying for all our sins? Yes! Men think they are better than other men and can earn their salvation by good works and Jesus had to show them the utter futility of such a course.

            4. So, setting aside the Law, the Holy Spirit through Paul tells us that because Jesus died for our sins, all of them, past, present and future; by faith in that propitiation, by trusting in God’s Word, by faith alone we could be saved aside from any works of the flesh.

            5. James then tells us, after we have obtained that salvation by faith alone, we will as a matter of our course of Christian living, be productive of good works towards other believers primarily, but also towards the world. Salvation already being granted the true believer, works gain us nothing, but it results by communication with the Holy Spirit in the Word. To make it easier to understand, can you imagine standing in the Holy presence of Jesus and sin in front of Him? Or, can you imagine being a recipient of that great gift of Salvation, we would not feel generosity and kindness towards all men? Thus, being born again and having Jesus inside, the true believer will be increasingly productive of good works, yet even failing as we all do, our salvation is sure, because it is not earned, it is a gift of God.

You would do better to look at all the New Testament, to ask God to bring all seeming conflicting passages into harmony and then, with Conviction, Repentance and Conversion by faith, find eternal life. Or, using the Word prove to yourself that salvation is not a gift, that we cannot be saved lest we earn it and in the process admit Gd lied or deliberately sowed seeds of confusion.

Like all godless liberals, you are unable to mount a rational argument or defend your beliefs, relying solely on your fleeting and unreliable emotions.

If you have a point to make – make it, solely pasting links only betrays your lack of intellect and inability to know your own mind.

          • ellinas1

The link I posted describes my point/position perfectly.
You are also regurgitating what you have learned from your denomination and Bible albeit in a convoluted and erroneous manner.
Nothing original coming out of you. You are afraid to accept what is and is not on faith alone. You try to prove and analyze everything.
The truth is self evident and needs no analysis from a wayward protestant like you.

          • Neiman

If so, then state that truth succinctly, uaing biblical proofs that can be either accepted or refuted with other Scripture.

By the way, I have NO denomination, I have NEVER belonged to any Christian denomination, religious sect or group. It appears what you oppose is Protestantism generally, demanding a works oriented way to salvation which does not require faith in Christ as one’s Savior and Lord, as you believe Gay Bob, an admitted non-Christian, is, because you think him good – saved.

Jude 1:3 “Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.”

“By the “faith” is meant the doctrine of faith, in which sense it is used whenever faith is said to be preached, obeyed, departed, or erred from, or denied, or made shipwreck of, or when exhortations are made to stand fast, and continue in it, or to strive and contend for it, as here;”

Isaiah 1:18 “”Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD.

The Lord commends us to reason together as believers to seek the truth and to contend; that is, strive for and defend the faith for our mutual edification and spiritual maturation.

The classic verse promoting apologetics (the defense of the Christian faith) is 1 Peter 3:15, which basically says that believers are to make a defense “for the hope that you have.” The only way to do this effectively is to study the reasons for why we believe what we believe. This will prepare us to “demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ,” as Paul said we should (2 Corinthians 10:5). Paul practiced what he preached; in fact, doing apologetics was his regular activity (Philippians 1:7). He refers to apologetics as an aspect of his mission in the same passage (v.16). He also made apologetics a requirement for church leadership in Titus 1:9. Jude, an apostle of Jesus, wrote that “although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints” (v.3).

Where did the apostles get these ideas? From the Master Himself. Jesus was His own apologetic as He stated time and again that we should believe in Him because of the evidence He provided for what He taught (John 2:23; 10:25; 10:38; 14:29). In fact, the whole Bible is full of miracles specifically being done by God to confirm what He wanted us to believe (Exodus 4:1-8; 1Kings 18:36-39; Acts 2:22-43; Hebrews 2:3-4; 2 Corinthians 12:12). People rightly refuse to believe something without evidence. Since God created humans as rational beings, we should not be surprised when He expects us to live rationally. As Norman Geisler says, “This does not mean there is no room for faith. But God wants us to take a step of faith in the light of evidence, rather than to leap in the dark.”

The problem is, it appears you cannot defend your faith as it is built upon a works salvation and needs not Christ as Savior. You belong to a long bankrupt, spiritually dead church of works. I say this to tell you that you are terribly deceived and terrified of going to God’s Word to defend what you cannot defend, like abortion and homosexuality and a universal salvation, which all denies Christ.

Anthony Kapel “Van” Jones (born September 20, 1968) is an American environmental advocate, civil rights activist, and attorney. Jones is a co-founder of four non-profit organizations. In 1996, he founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, a California non-governmental organization (NGO) working for alternatives to violence. In 2005, he co-founded Color of Change, an advocacy group for African Americans.[1] In 2007, he founded Green for All, a national NGO dedicated to “building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.”[2] In 2011, he founded Rebuild the Dream, a national advocacy organization working towards a fairer economy.[3] His first book, The Green Collar Economy, was released on October 7, 2008, and reached number 12 on the New York Times Best Seller list.[4] In 2008, Time magazine named Jones one of its “Heroes of the Environment”.[5] Fast Company called him one of the “12 Most Creative Minds of 2008″.[6]

In March 2009 Jones was appointed by President Barack Obama to the newly created position of Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, where he worked with various “agencies and departments to advance the administration’s climate and energy initiatives, with a special focus on improving vulnerable communities.”[7][8] In July 2009 he became “embroiled in a controversy”[9] over his past political activities, including a public comment disparaging congressional Republicans, his name appearing on a petition for, and allegations of association with a Marxist group during the 1990s.[10][11] For these issues, Van Jones was heavily criticized by conservatives.[12] Jones resigned from the position in early September 2009.[9] “On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me,” Jones said in his resignation statement. “They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide.”[10]

Jones is currently a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and a senior policy advisor at Green for All. Jones also holds a joint appointment at Princeton University, as a distinguished visiting fellow in both the Center for African American Studies and in the Program in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
