Obama’s gun control schemes won’t make us safer

The president surrounded himself with children to introduce his “new” gun control plan, but sadly, there is nothing here for the children. The administration’s proposals are the same tired gun control schemes that have failed in the past.

None of the proposals dealing with guns will make children safer. Instead, they will make children, and the rest of us, less safe by redirecting scarce resources into shuffling federal paperwork for programs that have proved not to work.

A ban on “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines was tried for 10 years, and it did nothing to reduce crime or prevent atrocities such as Columbine. The use of scary-looking but extremely popular guns in crime did not decrease after the ban, nor increase after the ban expired. The truth is, rifles of any kind are used in only about 3% of “gun crime.”
