Gun Control Opportunists Not Likely To Succeed

Because gun control is a radioactive issue.  And why is it radioactive?  Because most Americans like their freedom to own guns.

WASHINGTON (CNN)—Is the Virginia Tech tragedy likely to put gun control on the political agenda? Don’t bet on it. In recent years, gun control has been an issue most politicians prefer to stay away from.

The last significant gun control measures to make it through Congress were the Brady bill in 1993 and the assault weapons ban in 1994.

And what happened? Democrats lost control of Congress for 12 years. President Clinton said the gun lobby had a lot to do with his party’s defeat. Democrats have been gun-shy ever since.

There will be some agitating from the usual suspects in the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre, but ultimately it’ll probably fail.  Maybe some token bit of legislation will pass, but the reality (despite what gun control nuts like to think) is that most Americans feel we have more than enough gun control.

I believe it was Thomas Sowell who noted that most mass shootings are stopped when men show up with more guns!

In fact, some mass shootings have been stopped by armed citizens. Though press accounts downplayed it, the 2002 shooting at Appalachian Law School was stopped when a student retrieved a gun from his car and confronted the shooter. Likewise, Pearl, Miss., school shooter Luke Woodham was stopped when the school’s vice principal took a .45 fromhis truck and ran to the scene. In February’s Utah mall shooting, it was an off-duty police officer who happened to be on the scene and carrying a gun.

Excuse me, you were saying?
