Group Wants Concealed Carry At Public Gatherings And On College Campuses
A reader calls my attention to House Bill 1348, which would exempt holders of concealed carry licenses from the ban on carrying firearms at public gatherings in North Dakota. This would allow concealed carry in parks, churches, on campus and at political rallies.
There would remain a ban, however, on concealed carry while on K-12 school property which is something I believe is mandated by federal law through our education funding. Meaning we, as a state, cannot end the ban on concealed carry on K-12 school grounds without losing our federal education funding.
Just another way in which taking federal money loses us our local control.
But back to HB1348, I think this is a good idea. Far too often I think we lose sight of the fact that keeping and bearing arms in this country is a right, not just some weird fetish gun enthusiasts like to engage in (which is no doubt how the anti-gun people see it). Before that right is curtailed we must have good reason, and I really don’t see what good reasons there are for denying properly-licensed students from carrying their guns on campus.
And indeed, there are a lot of good reasons to allow it such as the tragic campus shootings we’ve seen in recent years. Were more students armed at the time of those shootings the outcomes, while still troubling, probably wouldn’t have been as tragic.
This bill is currently being sponsored by Republicans Duane DeKrey, Chuck Damschen, Gerry Uglem, Robin Weisz, Stanley Lyson and Terry Wanzek. They should be supported in their efforts to pass this, and all North Dakotans should contact their specific representation in the state legislature and ask them to support this bill as well.
