Great Britain Using Spy Planes, Thermal Imaging Cameras To Identify Households “Wasting” Energy

Hello Big Brother.

…snooping on the public has reached new heights with local authorities putting spy planes in the air to snoop on homeowners who are wasting too much energy.
Thermal imaging cameras are being used to create colour-coded maps which will enable council officers to identify offenders and pay them a visit to educate them about the harm to the environment and measures they can take.
A scheme is already under way in Broadland District Council in Norfolk, which has spent £30,000 hiring a plane with a thermal imaging camera.
It said the exercise has been so successful other local authorities are planning to follow suit.

“Educate them about the harm to the environment and measures they can take.” That certainly sounds…ominous.
So, are they finding enough energy waste in these homes to offset the energy used in flying a spy plane around ? Not to mention driving bureaucrats out to harass families using more than the government-approved level of energy?
Not that it matters. Shouldn’t citizens be free to use as much power as they can afford to pay for? And if there is some worry over power shortages, shouldn’t market pricing driving up prices as demand increases and/or supply declines be enough to enforce voluntary rationing?
You’d think. But as usual, the government just can’t help but try to control every aspect of our lives. For our own good.
And if you think this is just something those silly Europeans are doing, remember that our own President has said that we can’t just set out thermostats at any level we want (even as he sets his own thermostat at whatever level he wants).
Clearly, the intent of the big government liberals is to control every aspect of our lives up to and including our thermostat settings for our own good.

But, as an added side benefit, they might be able to catch some marijuana growers if they implemented it here in the States! Then let’s see if the libs think there are any privacy issues involved! Heh.

They just might be taking steps to reduce energy consumption!

There’s always another leftist excuse for curtailing people’s individual liberty.

You…neo-cons…really have to get your stories straight.

Is energy a national security issue or not?

Is it good to save energy or is it good to waste energy?

What did the last great conservative leader say …”It creates a national security issue and we’re held hostage for energy by foreign nations that may not like us”.

  • robert108

So, the Brits are paying the govt to spy on them and then persecute them? Ain’t socialism grand?

BTW, little ribby, we pay the govt to provide us with energy, not to tell us how much to use.
The “fiends” are the ones who take our money to do a job, don’t do their job sufficiently, and then tell us it’s our fault for wanting what we pay them to produce. Nice racket.
They’re supposed to be “public servants”, but they treat us as if we’re their servants.

  • rbb

    OMG!!!!

They just might be taking steps to reduce energy consumption!

Next thing ya know they’ll put colored lights on our streets and force us to stop and go at their command!

    What fiends!!!!

This is utterly ridiculous. Anybody that has spent time in the UK knows that they already keep their houses at temperatures just above the threshold of frostbite. That’s why they wear several layers of wool clothing.

Sugar Tax, Sin Tax, Energy Tax – growl.

  • SigFan

If a homeowner wished to have a contractor do an energy study on their residence that’s fine. People who are not energy concious out of environmental concern, but simpy wish to conserve their capital do this regularly. Having the government do it surreptitiously, and then come harangue you for being a bad citizen is something else altogether.

I am sure we will be doing that here as well very soon.

Is energy a national security issue or not? When it comes to the individual’s choices to pay for the energy he or she wants, it’s not a “national security issue”, moron. When it comes to allowing environmental fascists control our domestic energy development, thus enriching terrorists by making us dependent on their oil, it is obviously a national security issue. You really don’t know that?

Is it good to save energy or is it good to waste energy? Your usual lying false dichotomy. It’s good for free people to make free choices in how much energy they are willing to buy. Nothing a free individual chooses to buy is a “waste”.

Is energy a national security issue or not?

The question isn’t whether or not conservatives regard energy production as a national security issue. The question is whether or not leftwing statists can be made to understand that energy production is too important to be left to the partisan machinations of government government bureaucrats. Nothing is as cost effective and efficient as free market capitalism, regardless of what is being produced. If you were serious about energy independence, the drilling would start tomorrow.

Hell, let’s just save the money of using spy planes (with their global warming causing engines) and simply have the government open and read their utility bills!

Big bills bad, little bills good! /sarcasm

Actually, the “big bills bad” is the incentive most of us have for conservation. It’s what makes the insulation/caulking, etc. cost effective

You…neo-cons…really have to get your stories straight.
Is energy a national security issue or not?

It’s become a national security issue because the liberals have implemented policies that promote energy scarcity.

I can’t write with authority on England, but if American liberals would let us drill, build more nuke plants, and open Yucca Mountain, this country would have an energy surplus.

They’ve been doing this in certain cities in Great Britain for at least two years now.

Did everyone in England miss the message of Brazil, 1984, etc.? Evidently so.

Many of the houses in southern England are not exactly the type you can insulate correctly without removing plaster and redoing them completely. Are they suggesting mass renovations? What about the health effects on the lungs from all the plaster dust? More nannystatism and mandated referrals to licensed (read government approved) workers. And while they’re at it, exhortations to redo their wiring and plumbing and make structural changes…

The meddling never ends over there…

Your glass is mostly empty outlook RBB is stupid. Try seeing it the way ancient man would have. Try a glass mostly full and more on the way outlook. Instead of simply reducing energy, why not deploy more sources. France could help England with their energy scene. They have plenty of nuclear power experience. Oh that’s right, we can’t do nuclear because of Luddite anti-technology busy-bodies and because more energy, plenty of energy, is against the ideals of socialist control freaks who want the public under total control through rationing of goods, energy, and services.

We should have a world where was can waste energy as much as the universe does. Come to think of it, G-d’s creation is extremely wasteful with an energy expenditure constantly across the entirety to put the most wasteful man to blushing. So where do we get off acting like ascetic misers and wasting the bountiful resources before us?

We should have a much more energy plentiful world, not an energy poor world with rationing and intrusion and controls on everyone.
