Grand Forks Herald’s Embarassing Top Ten Stories of 2008

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

At least the paper’s good for something.

The Grand Forks Herald ran a story listing what they considered to be the Top Ten local news stories in 2008.  If this is the best that they did in 2008 then anyone paying for a subscription is wasting their money.

Amid a contentious debate over the Fighting Sioux nickname, the Gamma Phi Beta sorority held a party in which students dressed as stereotypical Indians, the men in loincloths and faux war paint and the women in Indian maiden dresses.

The party happened in November 2007 but pictures from the party came to light in March.

Former sorority President Jillian Krivarchka said it was supposed to be a cowboy-themed party but partygoers chose to dress as Indians. “We understand it was not the best thing.”

So a group of college kids hold a cowboy party OFF campus and a few of the invitees show up dressed like Indians.

Oh that’s a blockbuster of a story.  Do the folks over at the Herald still consider themselves a news organization?

I hope someone comes out with a strong shopper soon so that the stores I like to shop have a place to insert their sales flyers.

By the way, Say Anything covered the story as well.  We just didn’t think it was anything more than a way to highlight liberal hypocrisy, even in North Dakota.

Update:

I was asking Rob if he agreed that this top ten list was “pathetic.”  He agreed and then he asked was Kent Conrad’s Countrywide scandal included?

No it was excluded in favor of a non-story like this.

I guess your US Senator being caught getting what amounted to a $10,000 gift as a “Friend of Angelo.” isn’t worth a mention.  Not even when it turns out that you waived the budget rules to bail out the mortgage industry.  (That worked out well staving off a financial crisis btw).

And it’s not worth a mention that Conrad told at least 3 different stories concerning how he got that loan.  That’s not noteworthy either.

Of course the Forum papers, of which the Herald is the second largest, took over and buried the story.  When it comes down to it, the fact that the Forum properties are so blatantly partisan is probably the biggest story of all.  And you can’t expect the Herald to cover that.

I’m sure the Herald apologists will say that this was for local stories only.  That won’t cut it since they covered such local stories as the worldwide price of wheat and actions by the state Board of Higher Education.  The scandals of OUR senator are as much a local concern as those stories.
