Governor John Hoeven Announces “New” Jobs Website That Really Isn’t All That New

North Dakota’s oil industry is booming.  Because of that, North Dakota needs workers.  Which means that North Dakota Governor John Hoeven needs to appear to be doing something to bring workers to the state.  So what’s he do?  He launches a new website to help people connect with jobs in North Dakota.  The funny thing is that this “new” website is really just a domain that points to the old JobsND.com website that’s been up for years.

The new website is called FindJobsND.com.  When you click it it goes to another domain called NDWorkforceConnection.com which looks like this:

JobsND.com, which is a website run by North Dakota Job Service that has been available (and advertised at the expense of our tax dollars) for years now, displays this when you click on it (the Job Service “Workforce Connection” website):

When you click on the “Find a Job” link you go to the NDWorkforceConnection.com website already pictured above.

And when you click “Find A Job” at NDWorkforceConnection.com?  Why, you’re directed back to the old JobsND.com interface that’s been up and running through ND Job Service for years.

So basically what the Governor has done is spent North Dakota taxpayers on registering a new domain, designing a page to reside there, and then just linking that page to the existing online jobs database already being run for the state.

And for some reason he thinks this great accomplishment warrants a joint press conference with the head of North Dakota Job Service.  Again, at the expense of the taxpayers.

Amazing.

The only question remaining is: Which one of Hoeven’s advertising buddies got the contract for this meaningless endeavor?

Comments

Hoeven might have mentioned that “slackers need not apply.”

Sure it was worthless and probably profited a buddy of the governor.

But at least he didn’t do something worse.

I heard that his campaign slogan was going to be “The empty suit that was around when oil hit $100/barrel so that he could throw a lot of other peoples money around.”

Catchy isn’t it.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Rob--don’t let your disdain for Hoeven make you sploppy in your reporting.  The Governor did not announce a “new” website, but rather an “enhanced” website.  Further, it would seem that marketing “findjobnd.com” is bit easier than that long “workforce connenctions” url.

You put up a strawman on this one.  See the official release from Job Service at:

More recycled, repackaged crap from our gov’mint. They’ve been pissing money away on this kid of crap for so long, I wonder if anyone even notices it, beyond folks of our ilk? Even an acquaintance of mine, who seemed to mouth all the right conservative platitudes in times past, has jumped on the bandwagon and is trying to get on the teat for his start up business. What happened to risking your own money for your dreams? Why is it necessary to risk mine?

I suppose the empty suit isn’t aware of the thing called Google.

Type in North Dakota Job and you get Job Service North Dakota.

I fail to see that you need to do anything else.  Not many people type in addresses anymore.

But as I said as long as the Governor is playing at being busy he’s probably not doing anything real bad.

It’s not the fact that it’s “new” that’s special, but enhanced like Da-Man said. It uses “spidering” technology which basically surfs through all the Websites that display jobs open in North Dakota and gathers them up and brings them all back to the JobsND Web site. I can’t tell you just how valuable that would have been right after I got out of college and was looking for a job. I could have gone to one Web site rather than about ten different ones. It’s all about efficiency.

First, the original URL was JobsND.com.  That’s the one that’s been advertised for years.  “FindJobsND.com” is longer, and unnecessary.

Second, read the headline about the “new” website.

Third, there’s nothing all that “enhanced” about this website.  It works just like the old one.

So, to sum up, even if the website was enhanced there’s no “new” website and there was no need for a new domain and page design.

Even if it was enhanced, there was no need for a new domain and a new template design which (and I know a thing or two about website design and domains, etc.) probably cost $1,000 - $2,000.

This was a wasteful duplication of efforts.
