Government Monopoly Post Office to Close Saturday and Sunday

U.S. Postmaster General Suggests End To Saturday Delivery And Rate Hike

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Snail mail might soon get even slower.
The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that it will incur about $238 billion in losses in the next 10 years if Congress doesn’t permit it to revamp its outdated business model.
The agency is proposing an adjusted mail service schedule, which will likely cut Saturday delivery, and eliminating its prepaid retiree health benefits. That alone, it says, will cut $90 billion in costs over the next 10 years.

Can we just admit that the government can’t run anything efficiently. They have over 200 years of experience and a guaranteed monopoly on a necessary service. Still they can’t help but lose money and cut services.
Why would we let the government take over our health care system. The more government gets involved with healthcare the more expensive it gets.

    Greetings:

I remain a willing and satified customer of the US Postal Service, but, after years and years of financial failures, I have a hard time believing that doing away with just Saturday delivery is a viable solution.

It seems to me that not much mail is time sensitive these days and for what there is, there’s always special delivery. I would propose two alternatives, canceling Wednesday and Saturday deliveries or canceling Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday deliveries. Even the latter would still have mail delivery every other business day. If businesses needed a higher level of service, say daily, they could pay some kind of additional fee.

As noted in your assessment, the volume of mail is decreasing and not very likely to increase in the immediate future. My own mail box mostly receives bills, direct (advertising) mail, and magazines, nothing that couldn’t wait a day or two. You can still survive and somewhat prosper in a declining market but you must cut deep and in the future, perhaps, rebuild. Cutting at the margins will result in a long lingering fit of financial sickness.

You think I care about what you think just because I mock you with my replies?

Don’t you ever get tired of being wrong, Dino?

  • crazyasyouare

I think they will manage by raising the cost of a stamp to about a buck, closing down a few locations plus this Saturday thing. If anyone is to blame for this, it got to be Al Gore, it’s all his fault, he invented the Internet.

They could just save some money and deliver my bills to Johnny Carson.

“It’s the greedy govt wet dream: they can still suck up more of our dollars, but give us less service in return.”

I’m wondering who’s profiting off of this though, 108. Dropping their service would result in less money spent annually… 90 billion to guesstimate.

What are they supposed to do anyhow? “Greedy government” as you so aptly put it isn’t a homologous unit. The post office (government) seems to be attempting a stab at fiscal responsibility, but they have their business arms tied by congress (government also). What are they to do?

As for ndoldman, yes, the post office is rife with inefficiency, but your argument is anecdotal. My dealings with my local post-office have been nothing but pleasant. They’re always ready and willing to help, even when I’m asking the same questions every time I come in. Maybe your postmen just suck.

  • Eddie

Why are we jeering? This is the size and scope of the federal government being reduced. Go post-office.

you are right but sometimes its fun just to see the dumbest thing in america try to prove it has some revalance. dino is the type of person that you put their head in a toilet in high school and flushed it.

if Congress doesn’t permit it to revamp its outdated business model.

I can’t wait until Congress is deciding what hospitals should stay open on weekends and what business models they are allowed to use.

But don’t worry, the boys in Washington (liberal dems mostly) won’t tell our doctors what to do and will let us keep our current health insurance, and at no extra cost!!!! Isn’t life under Obama grand?!?

  • sayanything-6521

The US Postal service could easily and effectively be run by private enterprise.

  • sayanything-5371

If the government runs health care it won’t run 7 days a week, either.

One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine. It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project. Most people are a little reluctant to oppose anything that suggests medical care for people who possibly can’t afford it.

Now, the American people, if you put it to them about socialized medicine and gave them a chance to choose, would unhesitatingly vote against it.

  • sayanything-287

Sell it to UPS or FedEx or simply contract private companies to provide daily home mail delivery, wherein they can develop profit making plans (think commercials) to make it pay.

  • sayanything-4603

drugs again? the post office will not even deliver mail if thr snow plows put to much snow by the box to lazy to get out of truck , the postal worker at the office I use looks like hes in slow motion to help cliants but when hes out in public he moves like a blurr.

Higher costs and rationing service. Does this remind you of anything else the government wants to take over???

  • sayanything-4603

they should concider mondays instead most gov holidays are mondays so they will be closed more than that with holiday pay expences will still be there if it was about saving money just another way to work less and get paid more

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

You really are enamored of boxcutters, aren’t you Dino? This doesn’t have anything to do with your do-it-yourself circumcision of a few years back, does it?

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Hmm, there’s no problem getting UPS packages in every rural area. How is it they’re able to make a profit and the postal boondoggle can’t?

    I guess because it’s a government creation.

…a decrease in postage fees resultant of the transfer to digital documentation?

  • robert108

“The USPS is completely supported by the fees paid for postage.”

Another outright lie from a lying hater troll. USPS has run a deficit for generations; if their fees completely supported them, where do those deficits come from?

  • robert108

“Why are we jeering? This is the size and scope of the federal government being reduced. Go post-office.”

IGNORE DINO. If everyone would ignore the a**hole, he would crawl into a hole somewhere and decompose naturally. Feeding him with comments and remarks on his insane and ignorant comments just encourages him.

  • sayanything-4416

I just find it hilarious that the GIant got kneecapped after all that money wasted on “defense.”

But all we lost were a few thousand greedy republican bond traders.

  • sayanything-4416

What’s wrong? Cat got your collectively stupid tongues?

  • sayanything-4416

Private enterprise would NEVER show up in the places where the USPS is forced to maintain facilities.

FedEX and UPS lost money in the recession, too.

  • sayanything-3444

Yeah but that delivering the mail stuff is complicated. Health care is easy, honest.

  • sayanything-4642

as i said in prior threads; when you are losing customers its always best to raise rates and reduce service instead of changing your whole business model.. that will draw them to you in flocks.

  • sayanything-4416

Then call FedEx next time, a-hole.

Wait until they close your post office.

  • sayanything-4416

The USPS is completely supported by the fees paid for postage.

Of course, the idiot cons think that 60% of their taxes go to welfare, 20% to foreign aid and 20% to the Postal Service.

    Stupid is as stupid does.

  • sayanything-4808

The US Government purposely exposed US Military personnel to nuclear fallout during above-ground testing during the 50s.

Just keep that in mind when you realize who will be running your X-ray machine if Obamacare goes where the leftists want it to.

  • sayanything-4416

The Postal Services problems are tied to the mandates placed on them by the republicans in Congress.

You want to see government failure? Take a look at the “defense” department that spent TRILLIONS over the years only to have a few guys with BOXCUTTERS (!!) take down the two biggest symbols of American Capitalism. And they even managed to hit the HEART of that useless defense, the Pentagon. ZERO OUT THEIR BUDGET.

    BOO-F’ING-HOO!

If the government is involved, you can pretty much scratch your butts with whatever they’re doing.  I am not a fan of Ronald Regan by any mean… but no truer words were spoken when he said… GOVERNMENT ISN’T THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM……. GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM.  Perfectly said.
