Government Creating DNA Database From Newborns?

Apparently there is some sort of movement afoot, which is causing the usual suspects to engage in Orwell-invoking alarmism but I really don’t see what the big deal is.
The government already knows plenty about us. They’ve got databases of our pictures (the DMV). Databases of our financial lives (the IRS). Databases of personal identifiers (the FBI fingerprints database). Databases of our address histories (voter registrations, etc.). So what’s DNA on top of that?
Just because they have it doesn’t mean they’ll use it for some Brave New World type of eugenics scheme, and on top of what they already have it’s really not much more.
The time for privacy alarmism has come and gone. There’s no need to fight Big Brother because Big Brother is already here.

I don’t want the government to use my DNA for any type of research they do. Why? Because it’s MY DNA. This is NO different than them taking my hand because they want to do research on fingernails.

Also, are they going to make any money from this? Is someone else going to make any money from the DNA?

This is a private property rights issues and one definitely worth fighting for.

You don’t need firearms, the government’s here to protect you.

You don’t need protection from unreasonable searches, the government needs to protect you.

You don’t need free speech, free press, etc; the government is here to protect you.

You don’t need DNA privacy, the government is here to protect you.

Comeon’ this kind of thing is totalitarian.

Right Lik, why would anyone be willing to give them that power.

We flake DNA off everywhere. The science world has already figured out how to match DNA. Calculating the match is only going to continue getting cheaper and quicker.

As soon as the government has the capability to track us everywhere, they will. That’s the nature of government. I’m not willing to throw up my hands and say “oh well” on giving them the final piece of the total tracking puzzle.

Total information awareness is not already here. It’s coming. Far from this being “not much more”, on the contrast – it is everything. It is the final piece of the puzzle.

You honestly aren’t concerned about this? That might be the scariest part.

Yeah, let’s give the government DNA.

And then in 4 years or 6 years or whenever we get the socialized medicine the Democrats want to give us, we can gamble that the corrupt simpletons in Washington won’t turn around and use the DNA database to limit the health care that they now have the sole power to dole out.

You like gambling with government power?

    I don’t.
