Government Cracking Down On Immigrants!

Of course, it’s just illegal immigrants that are being cracked-down on, but that’s just too fine a distinction to make in a headline.  At lease according to the Washington Post:

image

Immigrants are people who come to this country and obey our laws.  Illegal immigrants are criminals.  That’s fact, not rhetoric or hyperbole.

As for this crackdown, I’m actually a little cool as to how they’re doing it:

The Bush administration intends to begin writing to 140,000 employers on Tuesday regarding suspect Social Security numbers used by an estimated 8.7 million workers, as a way of pressuring them to fire illegal immigrants. President Bush disclosed the plan three weeks ago as part of a repackaged, 26-point enforcement program after Congress failed to overhaul U.S. immigration laws this summer.

Why should it be the responsibility of employers to investigate “suspect” Social Security Numbers?  The federal government issues them, and it is their responsibility to investigate SSN fraud as well as illegal immigration.  They are essentially trying to make business owners responsible for investigation illegal immigrants, and that’s a tenuous position for employers to be in as anyone who has ever stared down the barrel of a defamation or discrimination lawsuit knows.

If the Bush administration wants to do something about illegal immigration they should a) secure the border and b) facilitate local law enforcement arresting, detaining and deporting illegal immigrants as they’re found.

Well I think it’s ok for the employers to verify that they got the SS number correct.

The downside is that the illegals will probably go buy another Social Security Card with a similar number so that they can work another 9 months until the government realizes that that number is bogus too.

Well verifying is ok.  But who do they verify with?  The feds right?  And if the feds are already sending out letters about suspect SSN’s...what good is just verification going to do?

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

No I’m thinking more like this.  Let’s suppose you worked for me.

On your first day I write down you social security number and then transfer that number to our payroll system.  But I make an honest mistake and transpose two of the numbers.

The payroll system reports your social security taxes paid to someone elses account.  Their computer flags your account.

Now we could treat that like a crime, but I think it’d be more better for them to ask me to double check that I didn’t make a mistake.

Well that makes sense, but is that all the Bush administration is asking employers to do?

I think so but I’m afraid that the illegals will come up with another fake social security card and that will just start the process over again.

Until they roll out that verifying program to the entire country an illegal could probably play this game for as long as they want.

I don’t mind checking employment eligibility but don’t waste my time.

As you pointed out it should be primarily up the government employees to check their status when they get arrested, ticketed or sign up for welfare.

Of course, the Feds created the problem and of course, they will now make it some one else’s problem. It’s not going to be easy, getting 10, 12, or 20, whatever the number is, million criminals out of the country.

“You let all these guys in!” “Well, you hired them.”

EWS The government has made it illegal for employers to discriminate against illegals with a fake ID.

Hired them, sure. But how many were hired knowingly?

If someone comes to me with a SSN card and a driver’s license I’m supposed to spot the fraud?  I’m supposed to investigate if the Feds think it’s suspicious?

I won’t knowingly employ an illegal immigrant, but if I start trying to decide who is and is not illegal for myself I’m going to get sued.

Whistler, I suspect that the SS numbers their talking about are not suspect because of a simple transposition, but because the number holder is deceased or strangely holds 300 jobs spread across 40 something states.

Hey President Bush, instead of sending out letters, how about sending our INS agents to verify these numbers belong to the employees in question?

kbiel on August 30, 2007 at 10:19 am

Kbiel that’s true but there is a presumption of innocence still.

I didn’t say that I wanted the INS to arrest the people first.  Although it would be perfectly legal to hold them on site until the SS numbers have been verified.  I would bet that there are more than a few employers where these suspect numbers appear in large quantities.  Sending a letter to the small business that has one or two suspect numbers may be enough, but sending it to another meat packing plant that has 100+ suspect numbers is probably not a very effective move if you truly want to catch these people and deport them.

kbiel on August 30, 2007 at 10:48 am

That’s true, and it appears to me that they are going to send those letters to the employers with the largest number of mismatches.

I think there’s ample reason for raids of the largest employers.

We’re not just talking about sneaking across the border.  We’re talking about social security fraud and identity theft.

Plus if the government takes this problem seriously then the numbers will drop quite fast I believe.

I Find it funny that now Bush is for enforcement after being for shamesty for so long. The American people spoke they want enforcement, not shamesty.

Now its time to line up those 1,000’s of buses that they were talking about on Rob’s Blog Talk radio and I will gladly drive one those buses.

Um, sending letters is not exactly my idea of enforcement.  It’s more like appeasement, though Bush must think we’re stupid to believe we’ll be appeased by this lukewarm gesture.

Can you believe this crap? HERE

A federal judge in San Francisco blocked the Bush administration Friday from imposing a rule requiring employers to fire workers identified as illegal immigrants in government records or face possible prosecution.....

Let me guess the 9th circus court. This will be over ruled on appeal…
