Gore Spreading Terrorist Propaganda In Saudi Arabia

This makes me angry...

AP - Former US Vice President Al Gore told a mainly Saudi audience on Sunday that the U.S. government committed "terrible abuses" against Arabs after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and that most Americans did not support such treatment.

Gore said Arabs had been "indiscriminately rounded up" and held in "unforgivable" conditions. The former vice president said the Bush administration was playing into al-Qaida's hands by routinely blocking Saudi visa applications.

"The thoughtless way in which visas are now handled, that is a mistake," Gore said during the Jiddah Economic Forum. "The worst thing we can possibly do is to cut off the channels of friendship and mutual understanding between Saudi Arabia and the United States."

Gore told the largely Saudi audience, many of them educated at U.S. universities, that Arabs in the United States had been "indiscriminately rounded up, often on minor charges of overstaying a visa or not having a green card in proper order, and held in conditions that were just unforgivable."

"Unfortunately there have been terrible abuses and it's wrong," Gore said. "I do want you to know that it does not represent the desires or wishes or feelings of the majority of the citizens of my country."

Indiscriminately rounded up? Collecting people who are in this country pass the date on which their visa expires or don't have all of their immigration papers in order does not sound "indiscriminate" to me.

As for them being held in "terrible conditions," that isn't true either. Sure some Democrats think the detention facility down in Guantanamo Bay is equivalent to a Stalin-era gulag, but that point (as far-out as it may be) is irrelevant to this discussion. Gitmo is a detention facility for foreign combatants captured in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. People arrested on immigration violations here in the U.S. are kept in a federal prison somewhere, not a military prison.

To me these claims from Gore sound suspiciously like the sort of thing you'd read in propaganda put out by al Qaeda or some terror-sympathizing organization. They are, essentially, unfounded accusations aimed at tarnishing America's image in the world. What's worse is that they're coming from the mouth of a former Vice President, and not because they are true but because he feels they will help him in his campaign against his political enemies.

What Al Gore has done here is shameful and pathetic. Moreso in that Gore is apparently spreading this sort of garbage overseas where he probably thinks most Americans won't get wind of it.

This is typical crap for Gore.  Not like this is the first time he has come off like a nutjob.  I just hope that if he is pandering to Saudi fears and trying to spread hatred of the US, that he sports his beard.

I wonder what kind of status Gore as a loser in his last election really has over there.  Any one have any idea how the Middle Eastern culture views those no longer in power?

He is approaching treason.  Telling The Truth is one thing, exaggerating on speculations is another.  He reminds me of several US magazine editors who actually said that our military was "targeting" reporters and shooting them!  That person was taped and did step down.  Al Gore should respect his ex-position and stop spreading unrest overseas, renounce his US citizenship, or run for an elected post and see how many people support his inflamatory words and unsupportive speech toward our military and country’s policies.

That is what you get when an individual gets to the point where destroying their enemy takes precidence over their own success and the well-being of their country.  (I will conceed that Mr. Gore does believe  that ruining GWB would be the best thing for the country...which is why he cannot see the damage he himself is causing abroad.)

You think a group of Saudis are as forgetful as you are?

A U.S. Department of Justice report released in June 2003 surveyed four prisons for detainees including Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Centre. One guard from Brooklyn told the investigators that his fellow officers slammed detainees against the wall, threw them to the floor, shackled them to the walls and cell doors, insulted them during strip searches and made it clear to them that as "Bin Laden juniors" they were "never going to get out of here,"

Dow’s book describes a chamber of horrors that followed the Sept. 11 tragedy and the sweeping round-up of Arabs and Muslims.

Egyptian detainees held in Alabama go on a hunger strike. A Palestinian is transferred from jail to jail to keep him from contacting the media. He is told by INS officials that a condition of his release is that he cannot speak to the media about his case. If he does, they will lock him up again. An Egyptian man is confined for two months before being allowed to call a lawyer. He is given no soap or towels for a week and meanwhile interrogated. He says correctional officers stomped on his bare feet.

The minute someone dares---DARES!---to deviate from the official Bush regime line, y’all are ready to shout "treason!" It’s vulgar, histrionic, and makes you look a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

And King, just for the record, Gore WON the 2000 election. He got a half-million more votes than Dubya. Seriously, go look it up. He lost the Supreme Court battle and the Electoral College, but he won the election.

I’m a Seahawks fan, but I’m not in denial, believing they won the Superbowl.  Sure, the referees may have taken 11 points off the board, and the Hawks had more total yards.  It’s over, and done with and I’ve moved on.

You might want to try it too.

Just to stay on track did Mike Holmgren’s inability to let it go DURING THE GAME contribute to their loss?

I’d probably be upset afterwards, but getting off track during the game was a huge mistake you wouldn’t expect.

One person said that he is "approaching treason". Pay attention.

If you lose the electoral college you LOSE the election. Just for the record…

Are you try to say that it doesn’t matter one iota how many yards the Seahawks accumlated?

King of Fools asks, Are you try to say that it doesn’t matter one iota how many yards the Seahawks accumlated?

That is what I am trying to say. Don Myers would tell you that the Seahawks won and the Steelers lost. How would he say it? Oh yeah,..

And King, just for the record, the Seahawks WON Super Bowl 40. They got more yards than the Steelers. Seriously, go look it up. They lost the referee decisions and the scorecard, but he won the game.

And that is our Don Myers in a nutshell. Totally divorced from reality.

I first heard about this yesterday, thought it was BS. Checked Al Jazeera and, sure as shit stinks, there it was. Incredible. Is Al jr. suffering from alzhiemers or doing meth? Something is decidedly wrong. I never liked the man’s politics, not just during Clinton years, all the way back to his freshman term in Senate. He is, enviro-wackism aside, too intelligent to really think this current persona is going to advance him politically. Something is wrong with this picture. I am quite serious. Something is decidedly out of kilter here.

Thanks, DD. I remember Gore telling us the House of Saud were our greatest friends in the Mid-east, then a few days later the Israelis were our greatest friends in the Mid-east, then  at a G8 conference the Turks were our greatest friends in the Mid-east. This was all in ‘95-’96. Gore has always been a banner for all winds. This current kerfuffle is a bit different. Gore is far too expirenced an operator to believe this is going to advance his party, our nation, or his political career. Jeebus! It makes my skin crawl to come this close to defending AlGore.{SHUDDER}
