GOP: Tell Pomeroy To Stop Being A Lapdog And Start Being A Watchdog

North Dakota radio listeners have probably heard this GOP ad running that targets Earl Pomeroy:

The ad calls Pomeroy a “lap dog” instead of a “watch dog.”  And I think that’s about right.

Here in North Dakota we hear a lot about how much influence our all-Democrat federal delegation has.  How their years of experience and seniority gives North Dakota clout in Washington DC it wouldn’t normally have.  Pomeroy even touts his membership in the “Blue Dog” coalition as evidence of his independence and fiscal responsibility (something that is utterly bogus).  The truth is that these guys mostly just go along with the party line.  They are not nearly so independent and moderate as they let on.  In fact, the hardest part of their jobs is deviating from the party line just enough, with timing that maximizes the exposure of the departure no matter how trivial, that their North Dakota constituency is fooled into thinking that they don’t have three true-blue liberals representing them in Washington.

The commercial above indicates that the “blue dog” Earl Pomeroy votes with Nancy Pelosi most of the time.  And given how Kent Conrad just rolled over for Obama on budget reconciliation, the idea that these guys are principled and independent representatives is just plain laughable.

More North Dakotans would know this is we had journalists in the state who wrote stories instead of just re-writing press releases.
