GOP Behind Senate Dems In Fundraising
This is a first in recent memory.
WASHINGTON – The Republican committee that handles Senate campaigns picked up the pace in fundraising in February but still trails its rival Democratic committee by almost a 2-to-1 margin.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee raised $5.5 million in February, while the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee raised $3.8 million.
Democrats still hold a big advantage on money in the bank with $27.4 million, while Republicans have $14.5 million.
“We had a huge January and February. Where we’re seeing progress is new money through small donors in the direct mail program,” said Brian Nick, an NRSC spokesman.
The GOP holds a 55-44 advantage in the Senate, with one Democratic-leaning independent.
DSCC spokesman Phil Singer said: “Senate Democrats have twice as much money in the bank as the GOP and have several candidates who are already leading their Republican opponents in the polls. We’re exactly where we want to be at this stage.”
And they are. The conservative base in this country is disillusioned.
In 2004 Americans gave Republicans more seats in Congress and another term in the White House. Since that time these Republicans have failed to succeed with much of the agenda they were put in office to pursue (specifically the President’s promises on tax and Social Security reform) and have generally conducted themselves on fiscal matters like, well…a bunch of liberals.
Arlen Specter was recently seen getting all giddy about the GOP moving left on fiscal matters. With that kind of attitude prevalent, if not always spoken aloud, is it any wonder that the conservative base in this country – which elects Republicans with the aim toward limiting government and keeping spending low – is feeling a little uninspired?
