Google Violating People’s Privacy?

So the folks at Google, ever the innovators, have added a feature to their maps website called “Street View.” What it is, essentially, is photographs from the ground to compliment the satellite photography they already display.  Apparently there’s a Google Van or something that drives through neighborhoods on public roads and takes pictures from the ground which are then uploaded to the internet.

This has caused some controversy because one woman was able to find a picture of her cat looking out the window of her apartment on Google’s map feature.  She’s claiming invasion of privacy.

What do you think?

Personally, I think that this is far from an invasion of privacy.  I’m not sure why anyone would have an expectation of privacy on things inside their house that can be seen by people driving by on a public street.  If you’re sitting naked in front of a window and I walk by on the sidewalk and see you have I violated your privacy?  Of course not.  Yet that’s exactly the sort of situation where this woman is claiming that her rights have been violated.

Like it or not, we live in an information age.  Things that have always been public but often hard to access - like criminal and civil records, etc. - are becoming easier to find for anyone who capable of typing a few search strings and clicking a mouse a few times.  It may well be that one day, if you maintain a public phone listing, someone may be able to use the internet to find your entire criminal history, your civil history (divorces, etc.), satellite photography of your property as well as street-level photos of your home too.  This isn’t so far off, and I’d go so far as to say that it’s inevitable.  The toothpaste is out of the tube now, and companies like Google are going to make this data available on the internet whether you like it or not.

It’s really not something I’m all that worried about, though.  I’ve got nothing to hide, and if someone wants to see pictures of my house (and laugh at how I lack diligence when it comes to mowing my lawn and trimming my shrubbery) so be it.  I’m not in the habit of caring much about what other people think of me.

Certainly not a legal issue ("the eye cannot trespass"), but maybe an issue of respect?

This is somewhat akin to the government putting pictures of your house on the computer along with your tax bill and whether you paid it on time.

It seems to me that they aren’t breaking the law, but just because it’s public information doesn’t mean it needs to be published on the web.

I saw this over at Boing Boing and it made me laugh:

If you know anything about hosting websites it’s funny.  If you don’t get it, read this.

I think the legal issue here is off the table.  Google isn’t violating anyone’s rights.  But for practical matters, do we really want to be this exposed?  Given some of the things I’ve gone through with this blog (I still kick myself for not starting this anonymously), I know I don’t.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

You’re not the only one kicking you.

Actually I already saw the pictures of your backyard at the last cop party I was invited to.

Whistler: Well it’s a little damn late to tell me about it now!

Why should I have to tell you, you’re the one who planted them.

where do you guys live??? honestly, i was shocked when i read this. on my street (and i live about 10 miles south of boston, on a side road abutting a pond, there are little metal disks about the diameter of a baseball, imbedded in the road every 25 to 40 feet.  the satellite beams down to these disks and photos can be taken for a radius of maybe 50 feet, depending on surrounding buildings, interference, etc.

as for finding out other information, criminal records, divorce, etc., that has been available legally through the freedom of information act, and available illegally for years, and now through the internet for a price, one can get information about anyone if you have social security number, or telephone number, address, even first/last name. it is very orwellian. i do feel violated. just so you know.
