Was it the Communists, or former colleagues of Wernher Von Braun, that did Sputnik?  Sure, the Reds made the raw materials, but it wasn’t people born in the Soviet Union who made Sputnik work.

2. Bubba: What difference does it make who engineered Sputnik, it was the Soviet Union that financed it and was using it for propaganda purposes.
3. Rob makes a great point that google will honor just about anything or anyone, but not our soldiers, which is sickening!

Criticism of Google for acknowledging the USSR’s accomplishment is unbelievably small-minded. Sputnik was a defining moment in human history, while Veterans Day and Memorial Day are American holidays that occur every year.

America joined the space age a little later, but it took decades for us to start cramming our form of government down the throats of other nations by invading them, as the Soviets used to do.

Now, the world views America much like America used to view the Soviets (and I’m old enough to remember)

Bubba, the US is credited with developing nuclear weapons first…but how many of the scientists invovled were American by birth?  Not all of them.

The commies funded Sputnik, so you point is moot I believe.

The purpose of government shouldn’t be to do good, but simply to refrain from doing evil.

Not sure if “Asudo Nimh” is a troll, or desires intelegent debate, but I have to agree with one thing: Sputnik WAS a defining moment in human history.  It was the mis-step by the USSR that galvanized the US resolve to put our space program into high gear and beat the pants off the soviets.

As to Mr. Nimh’s point of view, I found some other things he wrote, and this may be of interest, since he doesn’t have a profile on this site that I can find.

Rob, I think that the distinction is important because it shows the intellectual bankruptcy of Communism.  The Lada and Trabant were essentially old Fiats.  Their computers were reverse engineered IBMs and such.  Sputnik was just a slightly bigger V2.

There is both a qualitative, and a quantitative, difference between this and Manhattan, which relied mostly on American physicists and engineers.

And Asudo’s view of history….well…needs a little bit of work.  More or less, Americans putting their form of government in other countries dates back to the War Between the States, goes through Cuba, Panama, Puerto Rico, and the Phillippines in the early 1900s, through most of Central America in the middle of the century, and achieved a wonderful high point in teaching the Germans and Japanese about freedom after World War Two. 

And the view of the Soviets?  With all due respect, I vividly remember university liberals trying to tell me that the Commies weren’t all bad back in the 1980s, and that we were.  Sorry, fella, but for liberals, the story remains the same, no matter what reality is.

It’s clear from this and other actions that Google’s founders aren’t exactly pro-American, other than the whole taking federal funding to start their business thing.  Heck, they even count Al Gore as an unofficial “advisor”.  So why is the Memorial Day and Veterans Day thing surprising?  It’s clear that with most people convenience is more important that conscience so it’s not like this hurts them.

The Soviets opposed dictators, invaded dictatorships, and then let the people pick their own government?
