Gingrich On The Wrong Side Of Another Republican Primary Fight?

Newt Gingrich got it wrong in the now-infamous New York 23 race initially backing Republican nominee Scozzafava before coming around to Doug Hoffman. Gingrich has since acknowledged his mistake, but now there’s another primary battle shaping up in Utah and Gingrich is back to…sticking with the establishment Republican.

Washington (CNN) – The conservative Club for Growth is hitting back at former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for criticizing the small government group during an appearance in Utah for Republican Sen. Bob Bennett. The Club is actively working to defeat Bennett, who is seeking re-election in November.
Several Republicans are challenging Bennett from his right flank as he seeks a fourth term, largely because of his vote in favor of the Wall Street bailout in 2008. While the Club has said they will oppose Bennett, they haven’t said which candidate they will support instead.
But Bennett has the backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee – which as a rule supports Republican incumbents – and on Wednesday Gingrich showed up in Salt Lake City to lend a hand.
“I wish the Club for Growth would spend as much time and energy to defeat liberal Democrats as they do dividing Republicans,” Gingrich told a crowd at Bennett’s formal campaign launch, according to the Deseret News. “I try to defeat liberal Democrats. I don’t spend much time trying to defeat Republicans.”

The problem with that last statement is that politics isn’t a football match. It isn’t “our team vs their team.” It’s about advancing certain ideas and governing philosophies. And if the candidates from a certain party stop supporting that party’s platform of ideas and philosophies than those candidates should be opposed by the base of that party every bit as much as the candidates from the other parties.
Granted, there are always shades of gray. Issues where members of the party don’t get along. And that’s fine. But there are also moments when so many in the party have departed the basic philosophies of the party that it’s time for a “house cleaning” within the party.
Gingrich clearly doesn’t think Republicans are at that point. Unfortunately, he’s wrong.

Right on your usual lying smear, eh Rob? Why not make a factual/logical argument instead?
    Do you have one?
My issue here is your backstabbing of Newt, instead of dealing with the relative merits of the candidates in the race, but nice try at distraction.
I know you have nothing else, but your fantasies about me aren’t the issue here.
You’re just peevish because I don’t march in lockstep with your liberaltarian ideology, Rob, and so you use lying smear.
To smack your lie with the truth, I am for people getting smart enough to make better choices than stupid and destructive behavior, which harms us all.

Primary elections are dominated by the ideologues of each party, forcing candidates away from their base – most of whom ignore primaries – and requiring a more extreme message from the candidate in an effort to win votes from the extremophiles. That process explains, in part, why the left and the right are often disappointed that their candidate – should he/she win the general election – often does not live up to his primary campaign promises. Once in office, the candidate will attempt to appeal to a moderate [and much larger] base by moving to the middle.

  • sayanything-43

Primary fights are necessary to force politicians to stay close to the base.

  • I don’t like today’s GOP

You are wrong. Newt is Republican. All y’all extremists aren’t. There will be no right wing takeover of the Republican party.

  • sayanything-2

Where is all your proof that Christians are using terrorism to force people to convert to Christianity, whiny lying c%nt? All you have to do is prove you did not say it, easily done. Why will you not do that?

And whilst we are here, where is all your proof that W had intimate, detailed knowledge of Al Queda’s operational plan and refused to stop it?

  • sayanything-2

Say the f**king moron who, daily, screeches that “rightwingers” are taking over the Republican Party. What a stupid, whiny, lying c*nt you have become. Oh, sorry, you always were a stupid, whiny, lying c*nt, just as all leftards are.

    Word.

“Says the guy who once defended alcohol prohibition.”

Rob, quit smearing Robert108. He clearly still defends alcohol prohibition.

A RINO is not the first choice, even if incumbent.

A RINO is acceptable if running against a Boxer, or a Reid, etc.

Now if we can just get Newt to go campaign for McCain…

  • sayanything-2

Newt is RINO politics in spades, and always has been. He lies a good lie, and thats it. He should stick to writing books about the past, and stay the f**k away from my government, he was thrown the f**k out of it, time to make him STAY the f**k out of it.

  • sayanything-42

Thus my hope that he (Newt) goes to campaign for McCain.

He has a point. Some ideologues wish to bash him, and he might have chosen to support a more conservative candidate, but the eagerness of some “conservatives” to stab other conservatives in the back in the name of ideological purity is something Dems are sure to exploit.

The only one who cares about Newt, besides Newt, is Sean Hannity. And, frankly, after Hannity endorsed Rudy, I kind of wonder if his endorsement means anything, either.

  • sayanything-4928

So true, it’s not 1994 anymore! Newt is smart, but I’m tired of Newt. He’s yesterday’s news. The next prez should have at least worked in the private sector…and not a bunch of think tanks. someone with real world experience.

  • sayanything-453

    hello peckerwood!

  • sayanything-6955

Newt is wrong a lot lately. A liberal is a liberal, with a D or an R behind there name. Same with the so called “moderates”.

  • sayanything-316

The RINO has been a pox on America for at least several election cycles now, and is the major leading cause of the mess we are now in.

At bottom, a RINO is a liar. The campaign Conservative, yet once in power, govern exactly, or nearly as badly, as your standard (substandard) Leftard.

But he or she is worse than your standard (substandard) Leftard.

    Why?

Because the Leftard flies the Socialist Jolly Roger from way out on the horizon, for all to see.

The crew can ready and run out the cannons and come about to fight the enemy.

    Not so with the RINO.

They fly under a friendly flag until they are right along side, shouting greetings and lulling the captain and crew into a false sense of complacency.

At the last moment, they run out their cannons, hoist the Jolly Roger and blast a broadside into you.

Similarly, the RINO waits until the critical vote and lo and behold, the defenses you thought were so strong have been breached by a traitor and you are taking friendly fire from behind. Like Specter, Snowe and Collins breaking ranks and to vote for the Porculus bill and at the same time, give the Pravda-esque MSM crowing privileges to say this bill was bi-partisan.

Or, when the populace are dead-set against Amnesty for Illegals, the RINO is up front and center, championing the same, often in direct contradiction to his campaign promises (Martinez anyone? ) and calling Americans who want America to be a country of laws and not to reward massive lawbreaking ‘bigots’ and instead of listening to the Will of the People, having the gall to tell them to ‘calm down’ (McCain and Grahamnesty remember? )

There has got to be truth in labeling.

    There can be no good science if the data is skewed (e.g. Global Warming hoax);

    There can be no good legal outcome if the Prosecutor is a liar and a cheat (Nifong) ;

And there can be no good legal election where the candidates are allowed to lie to the People with impunity about who they are, what they stand for and how they will vote.

  • sayanything-4642

It isn’t “our team vs their team.”

sure it is. now we are just looking for the right players on the roster. or we can just form a new team.

  • sayanything-21

I note that the fact that NEWT showed up in ILLINOIS to back a RINO who lost big time. Tea party guy won. Frankly, Newt is irrelevant. If he endorses anyone, they are toast.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Right on your usual lying smear, eh Rob? Why not make a factual/logical argument instead?

The truth is hardly a “lying smear.” And logic is usually wasted on you.
