Gingrich Admits: Endorsing Scozzafava In New York 23 Was A Mistake

He admits to putting party above principle, essentially.

“At the time, as a party builder and someone who has always been trying to help build the party, it struck me that she was the local nominee. She turned out to be a huge disappointment. And she turned out not to be frankly a loyal Republican,” Gingrich added. Responding to those critical of his endorsement, “And I think that those folks have the better of that argument.”

Situations like the one in New York 23, because they’re often not as clear-cut as New York 23 was, can be tough. On one hand, we want to advance the limited government ideology and should only elect candidates who will do that. On the other hand, demanding absolute purity means never winning elections.
And you can’t get anything done without winning elections.
So often we’re to look at imperfect candidates (and they’re all imperfect) and decide what choice will do the most good. Do you vote for the party candidate? A third party candidate? Or cast a “none of the above” vote?
Each option has its time and place, I think. Gingrich’s error was in choosing the wrong option at the wrong moment.

That reminds me of a time when a long lost relative of mine left me his
fortune but only if I could spend a million dollars a day for a month. It
didn’t turn out as awesome as I thought it would, but at least I got to
    pitch against the Yankees.

Nothing you babble about ever happens, rbb.

  • j.l.

You mean like the Democrats are under attack from their extreme left wing?

  • noonespecial22

Actually Brent I really like your idea

  • robert108

Thanks for admitting you can’t recognize the truth, even when smacked with it. Newt is telling the truth; he made a big mistake.

  • sayanything-5371

    Dude, you are dismissed. Gross.

  • I don’t like the GOP

It is truly a shame that the Republicans are under attack from their extreme right wing, and now even Newt is bowing down to them.

  • Brent

“Or cast a “none of the above” vote?”

Cute. At least you acknowledge the validity of the principle.

When the choice is between John Hoeven and some no-name democrat who can’t possibly win, I choose NOTA every time. Because I’m not lazy and I do care, I am there to vote. And my vote is for neither Larry nor Moe.

Frankly, NOTA ought to be a real option. People could select NOTA if they were unhappy with the choices presented to them. It is the PEOPLE’S SEAT after all and if they choose not to fill it, rather than fill it with “the lesser of two evils”, then they ought to be able to choose that option and new candidates can run in a do-over election.

Hannity has 3 million viewers. Olberman has 800,000. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sayanything-51

A lot of your loser’s endorsers will say that.
Had she won, Newtie would have one of his wives declare him a genius and ready to run for presidency.

    But that didn’t happen.
    Did it?

  • brenarlo

Olbermann and Hannity would make a good suck-off… because they’re both horribly partisan.

Olbermann has never met a social program he hasn’t liked. Hannity has never met a war he hasn’t liked.

(of course until the other party is doing those things… then the roles are reversed.)

  • sayanything-5371

That must have been nice. I had a similar experience. I had to have a room added on to the hanger where I keep the gulfstream to store all the $800 belt buckles I bought.

  • brenarlo

    Newt = has-been

Who cares what he thinks anymore?

  • sayanything-5371

Newt is a big time pundit and author now. He’ll never run for President or any other political office again. It matters little what he says.

stillings: rbb stands for reality bereft bob. He has on at least one occasion believed 1993 to be in the 19th century. He also seems to have trouble remembering where Asia Minor is, because no matter how many people tell him, even with an abundance in information online, he keeps asking the same question over and over.

Treat him as you would a befuddled elderly, familly member: humor him, but
pay no attention to his vain ramblings.

  • sayanything-287

Newt is a great scholar and intellect and a great minority party, back bench leader; but, his intellect and prior government positions have stimulated his ego to giant size.

Stillings: I’ll make it easy: 1. Everything he writes is a lie! 2. He is unable to engage in rational, intelligent debate of the issues. 3. He is only able to communicate in inane, vacuous, nonsensical one-liners and it is not worth your time or the time of anyone else trying to understand what he is writing about anything.

  • lioncourt

He only says this because she lost and he thinks it will make him look good with the base.

  • brenarlo

    Besides Sean Hannity.

  • sayanything-51

Big 180, can you name the current President of The United States of America?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

I agree with the idea that a certain percentage of “none of the above” votes triggers a new election with new candidates. I’d be all for it.

Unfortunately, that option is on the ballot right now.

And I wonder, Brent, if there’s ever been a candidate that you’d find up to your exacting standards. It’s very easy to take this “I’m above it all” position instead of getting in the arena.

As I said in the post, there are times when “none of the above” is a good option. Hell, that was my choice in the 2008 presidential election. And for ND governor.

But if you’re doing it all the time, nothing is going to change.

Gingrich’s decision was extremely disappointing. He is a brilliant political mind, but this is a call he should never have missed. Ideological purity should not even be brought up. No one can even say what that might be, but to borrow a phrase–”make no mistake”–the lines are being drawn. We are at war for the soul of this country, and souls are won on principle, not on party maneuverings and compromises.

  • sayanything-34

“Each option has its time and place, I think. Gingrich’s error was in choosing the wrong option at the wrong moment.”

    Well said indeed!

  • sayanything-8767

    Clearer yet. Thanks.

  • sayanything-8767

Somebody please tell me what “realitybasedbob” is trying to say—somebody OTHER than “realitybasedbob”. Perhaps I have stumbled into the “English as Third Language” section of this website.

  • sayanything-8767

    Thanks. Understood.
