Georgia Legislators Have Unpaid Taxes

All Americans are equal, but some Americans are more equal than others.

ATLANTA — Nearly 10 percent of Georgia state legislators are late filing or paying their state taxes, and state Sen. Robert Brown is apparently among them.
Brown, D-Macon, said Wednesday he’s not sure whether he actually owes the state or federal government any money because he hasn’t filed tax returns. He said he’s gotten extensions, but he declined to give more information or say for what years he received filing extensions. . . .
Graham said the 22 legislators were, in most cases, “repeat offenders” who “without a doubt” are purposefully behind. There are Republicans and Democrats among the 22, and members of both the House and Senate, he said.

I’m beginning to think that having unpaid taxes should be an automatic disqualification from holding political office, be it elected or appointed. After all, why should you have the privilege of serving this country if you don’t even pay your taxes?

It is a tragedy that tax evasion is becoming the norm rather than the exception with our elected officials. We need to take cautious approaches with every future election to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

Maybe, but what kind of standard does that set for elected officials? And let’s suppose for a minute that he is owed money.

In that case, rather than a lack of accountability or responsibility, not filing taxes in order to get that refund shows a lack of common sense.

When you get an extension you have to make an estimated tax payment. If you follow the rules about requesting the extension it is legal and nothing wrong with it. He might be right and might not owe the government anything. In fact the government might owe him money.

Yoo Boy, I agree with you.

Whether Democrat or Republican, you should have your ass shamed if you are a tax criminal.

If the tax code is so complicated that not even the people responsible for creating the tax code can comply with it in a timely matter what does that say about our tax code in general?
