George Tenet A Big, Fat Lying Liar

Previously I’d posted on former CIA Director (now apparently a CYA director) George Tenet’s book claiming that the Bush administration ignored intelligence/rushed to war in Iraq, etc. etc.  At the time I pointed out that Tenet was revising history a bit (he expects us to believe that his “slam dunk” comment to the President about WMD’s in Iraq didn’t have much of an impact on Bush’s decision to invade), but now it comes to light that Tenet outright lies in his book.

An example:

According to Michiko Kakutani’s review in Saturday’s Times,

On the day after 9/11, he [Tenet] adds, he ran into Richard Perle, a leading neoconservative and the head of the Defense Policy Board, coming out of the White House. He says Mr. Perle turned to him and said: “Iraq has to pay a price for what happened yesterday. They bear responsibility.”

Here’s the problem: Richard Perle was in France on that day, unable to fly back after September 11. In fact Perle did not return to the United State until September 15. Did Tenet perhaps merely get the date of this encounter wrong? Well, the quote Tenet ascribes to Perle hinges on the encounter taking place September 12: “Iraq has to pay a price for what happened yesterday.”

I’d like to see Tenet try to wiggle out of that one.

George “I can ruin an entire government agency if only given the time” Tenet won’t have to wiggle out of that one, because the media won’t hold his feet to the fire about the veracity of his book. It does not serve their purpose, and would damage their credibility by pointing out John Kerry like lies in doing so.

When I first started to read about this book in the press, my first thought was Tenet is trying to put distance between himself, his actions, and his culpability in our going to war.  The next question is why, and my only conclusion so far is he is going to run for office. He was raised in Queens New York, and may seek a senate seat from that state. After all they were willing to hire a fraudulent futures trading, terrorist sympathizing lying hag from Arkansas as a senator, how bad can a lying government bureaucrat be, even if he is from the CIA? He is working to make Bush look bad, so his heart must be in the right place.

Bill Richardson was an unmitigated disaster as Ambassador to the UN, and as Sec. of Energy, under President Clinton. How ever his failures in those positions have not stopped him from becoming a governor of New Mexico, or running for president.

So what does Tenet have to do to become successful in his public life after working to make a circus of the CIA? Perhaps one might start with looking at “Tenet’s tenets”. A group of sophomoric character traits that he envy’s but doesn’t seem to poses. Number three is particularly useful, and may prove the only one he actually has; “Follow your heart and dare to take risks.” Well he seems to certainly have taken that tenet to heart. John Kerry followed his heart and took some calculated risks and got caught. Perhaps Tenet thinks he is smarter than Kerry? I don’t know of course, but it would not take much to out smart a senator from Massachusetts now would it?

Perhaps the first step in getting elected or maybe appointed to an office (should a democrat win next year) is to distance himself from Bush, and how hard is that? Tell some lies in a book that the literati are only too willing to print, and gain some ‘street cred’ with the MSM. That hurdle jumped, it on to the election of his choice. Perhaps we will see him hinting that he will be willing to testify before assorted House and Senate committees, further endearing himself and gaining favor and probably free press with the MSM. After all Bill Richardson has shown that you can be a complete disaster at one presidential appointment and end up running for election to the highest office in the land.

C.

P.S. I am sure we will now see the liberal blogs from North Dakota rushing to aid and abet the veracity of this tome that has them slobbering with canine like enthusiasm, as they are only too glad to jump on this band wagon and set aside that critical judgment they employ the selective use of. I can hardly wait.

Tenet was THE primary source of foreign intel available to President and Congress, and was THE primary government agent tasked with preventing attack against America. And yet 9/11 happened on his watch. He was THE head of the largest intel agency in the world, and he entirely failed in that one, simple task. Why is he not sitting his ass in jail? Why did he receive the highest civilian award for this example of absolute incompetence? Why is his book selling at 40% discount as of 18:00 today?

When we compare Tenet’s former statements on Iraq and the Administration and those in his book, if I was on a Congressional Committee, I would say: “Comparing both set sof statements, it is clear that you either lied before or you lied in your book, so we have established by your own words that you are a liar, now Mr. Director we simply need to ask questions to establish what degree of liar you are!”

What a great contribution to the debate you’ve made.  But if you’re going to insult me because you’re angry about the reservations column I wrote maybe you could keep them on that thread instead of polluting the other areas of this site.

Just saying.

You just slander him because he’s Clinton appointed. He told ‘Aunt Jemimah’ about 9/11 before it happened and she, “can’t even recall” the meeting. He deserved the medal of honor he got. The Bush White House turned him into a scapegoat and slandered him. As has been pointed out in the past, the Bush admin ignored him and distrusted the CIA. That’s not Tenet’s fault.

Richard Perle was in France on that day

Perle on the other hand is a proven traitor. He was convicted of spying in the 70s for Israel. That should preclude him from ever stepping foot in the White House. He was probably in Paris, toasting to the imminent invasion of Iraq with Massud.

Sparkie Arbuckle on May 1, 2007 at 04:15 am

spark, I have been paying very close attention to all these shenanigans since the ‘70s. Tenet did not voice opposition to the invasion and toppling of Saddam. He was 100% in support of it. Until he was passed over for a plum Cabinet position, then he was all “America is an evil imperialistic warmongering hate-fest. Tenet told Clinton and then Bush that Iraq was developing WMDs. Simple fact. Tenet told Clinton and then Bush that Iraq was developing WMDs. Clinton has, since leaving office, repeatedly said Saddam had WMDs and connections to international terrorism. Why? Because George Tenet told him so, and showed him intel to that effect. These are the facts as they exist in the public record. Tenet can lie all he wants, his statements on GWoT are in the public domain, and we are going to deluge his lying ass with his own words.

Don’t worry about it. Janel is just disgruntled because Rob dared to speak of what he saw. She’s a 36 year old woman who is immature enough to log in as “Yo Mama” and make fun of someone’s weight. That’s all you really need to know about her.

Still, the degree of distrust the Bush admin has for the CIA has caused serious problems in the GWOT from day one. While Tenet may be a liar, ignoring the CIA and sidelining them is retarded. Even more retarded is getting all your prewar intelligence (er, I mean intelligence criticism) from a policy office in the Pentagon - the same office where Massad’s document pilfering spies work.

Sparkie Arbuckle on May 1, 2007 at 05:02 am

spark, the Company was gutted by the provisions enacted by the Church Commission. The Clinton Admin further under cut them by stripping their overseas intel gathering operations through restricting what foreign nationals could be contracted to work for us. And yes, I totally distrust the CIA. They have a solid history of fucking over our allies, a long list of people who made the fatal mistake of believing anything the CIA ever said or promised. Ask the Hmong, Kurds, Lebanese, Rhade, etc etc.

Cobar Towers, The bombings on the United States Embassy’s in Africa, and the USS Cole all took place on Tenet’s watch.

There is no doubt he lied, was utterly inept, and failed as the CIA chief, bringing shame on himself, his family, and his country. He should be made a pariah, and shunned by all for years, as Dwight Schrute shuns Andy Bernard.

Chris Brownell on May 1, 2007 at 12:30 pm

Chris,

Not to take anything away from what you say here, but 2H9 has an excellent point.

Our human intelligence capabilities were literally gutted by Democrats Frank Church, Jimmy Carter, and Carter’s Annapolis classmate, Stansfield Turner.  Our Intelligence Community has suffered a paucity of human intelligence ever since.  (The exception was the tenure of Bill Casey during Reagan’s presidency, but Casey kept much of his operations “off the books” and out of official channel, which made him a good deal more effective than either his predecessor or Tenet.)

As an example of our institutional over-reliance on technology, there is this excerpt from James Risen’s book, State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration:

She had probably done this a dozen times before. Modern digital technology had made clandestine communications with overseas agents seem routine. Back in the cold war, contacting a secret agent in Moscow or Beijing was a dangerous, labour-intensive process that could take days or even weeks. But by 2004, it was possible to send high-speed, encrypted messages directly and instantaneously from CIA headquarters to agents in the field who were equipped with small, covert personal communications devices. So the officer at CIA headquarters assigned to handle communications with the agency’s spies in Iran probably didn’t think twice when she began her latest download. With a few simple commands, she sent a secret data flow to one of the Iranian agents in the CIA’s spy network. Just as she had done so many times before.

But this time, the ease and speed of the technology betrayed her. The CIA officer had made a disastrous mistake. She had sent information to one Iranian agent that exposed an entire spy network; the data could be used to identify virtually every spy the CIA had inside Iran.

Mistake piled on mistake. As the CIA later learned, the Iranian who received the download was a double agent. The agent quickly turned the data over to Iranian security officials, and it enabled them to “roll up” the CIA’s network throughout Iran. CIA sources say that several of the Iranian agents were arrested and jailed, while the fates of some of the others is still unknown.

This espionage disaster, of course, was not reported. It left the CIA virtually blind in Iran, unable to provide any significant intelligence on one of the most critical issues facing the US - whether Tehran was about to go nuclear.

To be “fair” about it, intelligence successes are rarely reported.  Certainly far less than the failures.  But even so, Mr. Tenet appears to have a good deal to answer for.

It won’t happen, of course.  Instead we are left with the ridiculous 9-11 Commission report and its utterly frivolous recommendations, none of which are likely to improve our intelligence capabilities one iota.
