George Clooney Smug Alert

Did anyone else catch South Park last night?

Hilarious.

If you didn't catch it, Kyle's dad buys a hybrid car and gets all...well...smug about it. His smugness ticks off the rest of the citizens so Kyle's family moves to San Francisco to be with other smug people. Stan wants Kyle back, so he convinces everyone in South Park to buy a hybrid. After that happens, though, Southpark is covered in a cloud of "smug" created by all the eco do-gooders.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco (the nation's leader in atmospheric smug) the smug of hybrid drivers combines with the smug from George Clooney's Oscar speech and threatens to wipe the city by the bay off the map. The best part is the smug cloud, which is full of soundbites about Hollywood being better than everyone else.

The episode was pure comic gold. I think it re-runs on Comedy Central tonight if any of you want to tune in.

I didn’t like that episode; I think South Park has been on a downward spiral since about season 6. They just don’t have anything to say; their political satire consists of taking a controversial issue, presenting a hyperbolized version of each side, and ending the episode by starting right back where they began.

They work really well in absurdist humor and action movie parodies (those two parts were clearly the two notable aspects of Team America; think of the "Montage" song). Their political satires almost always fall flat; their only noteworthy feat is that their limited animation enables them to focus on issues more current than shows like Family Guy or The Simpsons.

I disagree. The whole point was that doing good for the world should be done for the sake of the world, and not as a status symbol. I particularly loved the jab at Clooney. I used to have a lot of respect for the man, but having watched the speech after seeing this episode, it’s true. The man could not have been more smug about anything. Giving hollywood credit for the civil rights movement? Please… That’s like giving someone credit for saving a man’s life just for showing pictures of the rescue..

This episode was awesome! What I like about South Park is that they’ll make fun of anyone, they have no bias. The liberal left is no exception, I’m personalyl quite tired with the "I’m liberal therefore I’m better than you" viewpoint and I’m glad that Parker and Stone touched on that in this episode. I also like their public response to Isaac Hayes leaving the show, Scientology deserves no more credit than any other religion or lack there of. The situation is much worse here in Canada where free speech is underminded unless you have social liberal views. Go Parker and Stone, go South Park!

Dave your just a Tom Cruise loving liberal. South Park is awesome. It can make fun of any stupid political issues. Vek is right. Smug Alert was trying to say that helping the earth isn’t about being better than anyone. Dave, if you weren’t too busy breathing in your own farts, then you’d see that.
