Gallup Poll: Americans Oppose Redistributing Wealth 84% To 13%

From a Gallup poll conducted in June:

When given a choice about how government should address the numerous economic difficulties facing today’s consumer, Americans overwhelmingly—by 84% to 13%—prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions and the jobs situation in the United States as opposed to taking steps to distribute wealth more evenly among Americans.

That doesn’t bode well for Barack “spread the wealth around” Obama and his “tax cuts for 95% of Americans” plan, which for the 47% or so of Americans who have nothing or next to nothing in federal tax burden will mean nothing more than a check in the mail representing taxes paid by other people.
Americans, at least according to this poll, don’t want to be given other people’s money. They want to be empowered to earn their own money. That means pro-growth economics. Lower taxes. Less government. More freedom.
Obama doesn’t stand for any of those things.

Obama is not wining because he is advancing better ideas. He is winning because the GOP has failed in so many ways and the country does not want to reward that failure, even if it means change they dont understand fully.
This massive loss for the GOP will be laid firmly at the feet of GWB and neocon games that were allowed to go on and on by the house and senate rubber stamp crowd. The GOP has handed this election to the dems on a silver platter, top to bottom.

That sounds about right. I made this point to wife last week. The Democrats generally feel capitalism just is not fair. Which sounds nice and all, I mean most people would like to see poverty eliminated, but when the rubber meets the road, their solution is just this – wealth distribution. And while people are against poverty, they are more against having their money taken away and outright given to the poor. This poll reflects that.

Which is why Democrats have to be dishonest about what they want to do. They want to redistribute wealth, but they can't say that. And the fools eat their lies like candy.

    Calling all liberals,

Here is your chance yet again to defend the liberal conundrum I more accurately an honestly coin the 'redistribution of prosperity'. You've stayed away from this far too long. Now out with it. Let's here the 'wisdom' of your policy.

    Trickle Up Poverty

It's not that he wants to punish your success, it's just, well, you know, the Marxist thing to do!

You know…. those who have must sacrifice for those that won't….

We'll be equal when all of us are broke.

Inciting class warfare… — American with Rabies

Class warfare will always exist as long as wealth is redistributed from the working class to the non-working class.

prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions

Also, sounds as though 84% of those polled want the government to take an active role in improving the economy, makes 84% of Americans Keynesian types, not idiot "small government (except for the military and police)" types.

  • HG

    Angry,

The government can take an active role and the constitution spells it out as "promote the general welfare". This includes enforcing laws which protect property and commerce. Redistributing prosperity, besides being absurd and impossible, requires government to confiscate the individual's property which it is sworn to protect. It is a form of theft and therefore violates the public trust.

If the 84% would vote McCain/Palin, we could avoid this Resurection of Comunism..

Everytime you say this, I have to step in. IF Obama wins (and it is an if), it will be by the narrowest of margins. It will be by one or two states. Historically, the only presidental polls that have EVER been close to accurate were in 2004. Before that, they always gave a huge edge to the liberal.

I AM CAUCASIAN, STILL I THINK SHARING THE PRESIDENCY IS A NATURAL EVOLUTION OF HISTORY AND A REAL TEST OF OUR PRINCIPLES AND SYSTEM. IT IS ALSO ALLOWING TRUE JUSTICE AND LEGAL MORAL PRINCIPLES.

I AM A MODERATE REPUBLICAN, YET OBAMA SPEAKS OF WISER PLANS. iI SUPPORT HIM. MCPALIN ARE TOO INCOHERENT AND MAKE LITTLE SENSE. PALIN REPRESENTS A BIG RISK TO OUR COUNTRY AND ITS COMPROMISE VALUES. SHE REMINDS ME OF THIRD WORLD TYRANTS AND JOSEPH STALIN.

    Gobbledygook.

How about the best individual for the job? An individual judged on his or her merits?

    Radical, I know.

I AM A MODERATE REPUBLICAN, YET OBAMA SPEAKS OF WISER PLANS.

    No, he doesn't.

Obama is a socialist wolf in sheep's clothing. His rhetoric and plans have been tried in country after country with no success yet. Quite frankly, the bigger government, win at any cost voter fraud, trade protectionism, <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=no+drilling&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=">environmentalist stranglehold, and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRGru2CPC4E">weaker military is anything but wiser.

$700 billion of our tax dollars are being put into the largest single government-enforced lump sum redistribution of wealth in history. That's $450,000 for each American citizen over 18 years of age.

Ain't going to us, is it? Yet we pay on…

  • http://freewebs.com/dleach/ Dale Leach

Hello everyone. My name is Dale. I am a independent conservative Christian. I like hunting which socialist want to take hunting rights away and charge $500.00 tax a year you own and when buy shells for you they want to charge a federal tax on them which will beb like .22 long rifle shells cost $10.00 plus state tax. The fed tax would be the amount of $10.00. This is the bills that the socialist want. There is more. Spread the wealth means take away money from hard working American and give it to socialists county. Obama said to the world that was glad to an American citizen but also said he was a World Citizen. He said this in front thousands in Germany. People need to read between the line.
Do you really want your freedoms to go away more? The socialist in congress are against free speech on the air waves. That means any. They want to reconstruct the internet so it will be government control like it was back in the Late 70's and 80's. It was tied into the colleges and branches of government. Get an opportunity please read the Bill of Rights – US Constitution – The Monroe Doctrine .Also,Please check on how the candidates voted on bills. Remember the house and senate has to work together on bills and pass them before a president signs the bill, So the issues are really in control of the congress. So we need to our voice to them.

    Blessings to all,
    Dale Leach

Phoney poll question. I'll give odds they say the same about the opposite proposition…concentrating the wealth.

Kenny, I doubt if you are right this time. The situation is different. The people are pissed. The economy is messed up, and MC has run a poor campaign.
I have said for a long time that this will be an electoral landslide, and I still believe it. I have also said that the popuar vote will be 3-5 points for Obama. I still believe this as well. Meet me here on 11-5 and one of us, me or you, will be eating crow. I think it will be you stuffing feathers in your mouth, but then I am only one guy with one opinion. I could be wrong.

As is typical, the quote from Gallup's 2008 Economy and Personal Finance Survey (see it at http://www.gallup.com/poll/106492/Just-Half-Americans-Co... is misinterpreted. In the poll, 68% of respondents felt that money and wealth should be more evenly distributed among a larger percentage of the people.

READ THE SOURCE, people. Polls are only as good as the questions asked, and you can't twist the answers to get to what you want to hear.
