Friday Night Babe

This week’s Friday Night Babe, is a vintage one, that perhaps your fathers and grandfathers could identify with: Rita Hayworth.

rita_hayworth

A friend of mine, I’ve never met, Lady Cincinnatus, has a photo of some “nose art” on her blog, and it got me to thinking:
Sixty to seventy years ago, red blooded American males went off to war. They fought to preserve a way of life. And part of that politically incorrect way of life, was the fact that young men liked to look at pictures of young women! The young men who became warriors went off to battle in machines that sometimes had pictures of scantily clad ladies painted on the fuselage.

One of the ladies who inspired some of that art was Rita Hayworth. Though she died in 1987, she left a lasting impression on her generation, and that generation left a legacy of freedom to us. Here’s to you, Ms. Hayworth!

Ahh, nice… a Friday night babe with class.
Actresses of the 1940s, to the early 1960s have it over their successors, in just about every way imaginable.
Why settle for the Twiggy and Ally McBeal figures when full-bodied; well-proportioned women possess such pleasurable beauty
Good choice, Proof

She said the guys fell in love with Gilda (the body, the sexual image, the role) and went home with Rita, a not terribly smart and an emotionally fragile woman.

You are right though, the soldiers were all sex obsessed and only went to war so they could ogle pictures of pretty, scantily clad women. I’m glad we had so many, otherwise we might have lost the war. We lost Vietnam because we didn’t have enough of these pretty girls to look at in the mud holes, the swamps, the rice paddies and other lovely places of rest! We will lose the war on Islamic terrorism for the same reason. Victory requires lots of sexually agressive, whore mongers. I guess my Navy Captain father fought for Rita in WW-II.

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

Neiman on June 27, 2008 at 04:06 pm

And her boobs were real and so were her curves. No size 2s in those WWII/Korean pinups. No women who look like 12 year old boys. Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Gina Lollobrigida, not a size 2 or a phony boob in the bunch.

Pal2Pal on June 27, 2008 at 04:06 pm

I should have added Kim Novak and Doris Day as well. And Neiman, the #1 pinup in Vietnam, at least in my husband’s unit, was Ann Margaret, certainly another who is/was no Twiggy.

Pal2Pal on June 27, 2008 at 04:10 pm

BTW, I think you can trace the flat chested, no hips, anorexic fashion trends of the last 35 years to a direct correlation to the number of gay men taking over in the fashion world. No sane woman would embrace unisexless look on her own.

Well, the fact that red-blooded, red meat-eating American males would actually rather look at a Rita Hayworth than a Twiggy should answer that question.

Pay2PAL: I understand! My comments were wholly sarcasm, but only because I thought the basis for this story was terribly superficial, denigrating to the many soldiers that fought for their country and who were not all sex obsessed.

Yes, many pin-up gals hav ebeen in every war, but “young men liked to look at pictures of young women! The young men who became warriors went off to battle in machines that sometimes had pictures of scantily clad ladies painted on the fuselage,” just seemed vacuous to me. That is not an attack against Proof, in any way, I do understand what he was trying to say, it is just somehow the story hit me as very superficial at first glance!

While standing in the checkout at the local grocery—in a configuration strangely reminiscent of cattle chutes in a slaughterhouse—I was, once again, forced to read the cover of women’s mags while waiting.

I was struck by the title of one article: “Boobs are back!”

Evidently, no one had been consulting the straight guys, since they’ve never gone out of favor!

Also, some time back, mentioning to a gal that her looks reminded me of ‘Bomber nose art’ must have been the right thing to say.

I ended up being with her for eight years.

It wasn’t an apology at all!

You say I superficially read your post, I say, IMO, your comments about the military were terribly superficial. I was not attacking you or your motives, only the nature of your post as I understood it; and now you are free to speak of my ignorance, inability to read, my hate filled comments, my false Christianity and make other personal, derogatory comments against me.

Oh, and I did not percieve (see) any comments on your part about the general population at that time, only about the military’s sexual obsession. So, I think it was perfectly reasonable of me to see it as demeaning to our troops. If I am wrong about this matter, I am wrong, but in most of America I still have a right to react to the comments of others as I understand them.

I’m not sure what that even means.

And Neiman, I find it more insulting for you to keep calling me PayPal than I do the idea that men are motivated by a well developed sex drive and a curvaceous woman. Just because men like to look at eye-candy while in the jungle or fighting the dessert heat and sandstorms doesn’t make them sexually obsessed in the manner I think you mean.

As my Dad once told my Mother when he thought she was getting too thin, “No man wants to be impaled on hip bones sticking out like the points of bayonets.”

However, if your intent is to pick a fight, play the martyr, and launch into a foul mouthed tirade, I can’t stop you!
But, there was nothing demeaning to our troops except your projection. The troops are no more enamored of pretty girls today as they were then. (As to your “sexually agressive, whore mongers” you know yourself better than I do!) The difference is in the society that pussyfoots around sexual differences and pretends equalities that are non-existent. It was a commentary on society you....Neiman!

Move_Zig: Boobs were definitely out in the fashion industry and women were forced to comply since all the clothes were designed for the flat-chested. As one who was lucky enough to be a God-given well endowed slender woman, trying to buy a dress or a blouse that would fit was near impossible. And it wasn’t until the last few years since boob jobs have come into vogue that we could even find decent and sexy bras or tops. You cannot force a 36D into a blouse designed for a 12 year old figure.

My Aunt, my Mother, Myself and 3 female cousins were all lined up for a family picture of some sort. A couple of years later a male friend of mine saw the picture and his reaction was, “Holy Crap, I’ve never seen so much boob in one place at one time in my life.” After cracking up laughing, I said, you are a young bachelor, aren’t their lots of girls out there, surely there are some with boobs. His answer was, “I guess not, they quit makeing ‘em like that after 1965.”

That was not intentional on my part, I use Paypal and unconsciously used that instead because your name is so close, I apologize!

You and your husband have the right to think eye candy is a motivating force for the military, I simply think that is far too superficial and a bit demeaning. Not that they don’t like scantily clad, pretty girls, I just think their reasons for fighting are not that crass (thoughtless, insensitive)!

However, if your intent is to pick a fight, play the martyr, and launch into a foul mouthed tirade

Where was the foul-mouthed language I used? Please quote me! Or, agree that you made a false accusation against me. I would not have used language like this: “That is not an attack against Proof, in any way, I do understand what he was trying to say, it is just somehow the story hit me as very superficial at first glance!” as it canbot be reasonably interpreted by any rational human being as picking a fight! Lastly, knowing your many comments against me and your personal dislike for me, I was providing you with cover if you chose to resort to that attack plan in this instance, not playing the martyr!

P2P-

Good on ya!

And yes, hiding those treasures are sacrilege as far as I am concerned, but it’s by no means confined to the West.  In Japan, it just wasn’t womens’ feet that were bound to keep them small, the fashion was kakure kyonyu—translated roughly as meaning hiding big boobs.

Wanting to keep the breasts unseen has a long tradition in Japan.

“Up until about the middle of the 1980s, nearly all women in Japan were either an A- or B-cup. Anybody who had large breasts was normally ashamed of them. And most of those who were big-breasted did what they could to make them look as small as possible. So there used to be a lot more kakure kyonyu than there is nowadays,” Masashi Miyazawa, head of marketing at apparel sales company Emerge.

All the more reason to keep homos away from dictating fashion.

At least, unlike you, I was not dreaming of being sodomized or having oral sex with men.

I don’t care what size a womans breasts are, never have, if they are feminine and have something inside of value, like intelligence, humor, and ability to communicate, sensitivity, kindness, etcetera I find them attractive. Also, I never needed a big pair of breast to motivate me to defend my brothers in the field, I did my duty because we protected and defended each other, there were nice women available on R&R and if needed, brothels are always nearby at war.

One last time, I understod what Proof was saying, I did not judge him or his motives, I just commented on the fact I thought the words/theme was vacuus and superficial. It was my opinion, not fact, just my opinion!

You folks quibble over the weirdest things.

Can’t we all just agree that big boobs are really really cool?

Insofar as they were related to military endeavors, I recall one aspect of being in the military were long stretches of enforced abstinence due to the complete absence of wimmen.

That was a real sad state of affairs when taken in combination of with the fact of being in the best shape of your life and nowhere to direct your energies.

Having at least the comfort of some skantily-clad vixen adorning your bomber, when being lonely and so far from home, doesn’t surprise me in the least.

I guess Nieman thinks it is more sensitive to women to go to some 50 cents a BJ hooch than to have a picture of a healthy American woman. What’s next, charging Bob Hope as a sex pervert and misogynist because his shows to entertain the troops always had sexy women in them?

Audrey Hepburn was a beautiful and talented actress who came along at the right time when nymphs were in vogue. Along with Jackie Kennedy. No figure, but she could show off designer clothes well. That’s why fashion designers want no curves and anorexic models. They don’t want those boobs or hips distorting their creations. But, men, in my limited 6 decades of experience, like women who look like women and not 12 year old boys or prepubescent girls. As some guy “crassly” put it, “a woman with a little meat on the bone.”

(1) I wouldn’t know, I never engaged in sex with Vietnamese whores or prostitutes. What a sonofabitch that makes me huh PAL2PAL? (2) Next, I never said there was anything wrong with soldiers having pictures of big breasted women. Quote me where I said that or admit you are making a false accusation. (3) You cannot tell the difference between a complaint about the overall superficiality of the comments made in the post, as I understand them, and having a dislike or hatred of big breasted women or pictures of the same. You think making false charges and obfuscations make you right, they do not! (4) I met and spent some time with Bob Hope, respected his efforts for the military and never here or anywhere else objected to his having lots of big breasted women in his act; that was another false accusation and deliberate misdirection to make you think, in your own estimation, that your are wise.

Everyone one of you have focused solely on big breasts, and despite the fact I never spoke against big breasts, you are irate, up in arms to defend big tits! None of you are capable of confining yourself solely to the point of superficiality of the comments, well Proof tried once; but other than that it is all big breasts, big breasts as If I ever said anything bad about them, which I did not!

I never said nor intimated any such thing, that is another false accusation from you without any evidence! You assume that, without any justification at all. What you don’t like, and your being a woman I find it strange indeed, is that I don’t measure the worth of a women by the size of their breasts, one way or another. Oh geez.  You folks are still at it?

Now Audrey, what a sweetheart!  There’s something to like in just about every female.  In her, she exuded sweetness, a silken voice, porcaline skin and great big, beautiful eyes!

No, she was no bombshell, but lovely in her own way.

According to Turner Movie Classics, she was brand new to the scene when she co-starred with Greg Peck in Roman Holiday

There was a scene which depicted an old statue with an open mouth.  Peck, in this scene, tells her that if you put your hand in the statues’ mouth and told a lie it would bite it off.

He then commenced shouting and writhing in pain, as if the statue was doing just that and pulled back a stump.

97jp8j.jpg

Poor little Audrey screamed in horror.  Greg popped his hand out from where he had been hiding it up his coat sleeve.  Audrey reacted in good-hearted anger, pelting him with kitten blows.

According to Robert Osborne, the scene was real, with Peck actually fooling this young girl.

Such was her charm.

Neiman, I think what some people are meaning is that at one time, the zaftig female shape was rightfully more appreciated and/or acceptable and certainly never shunned as it is by many today.

Thanks for your insights, of course you could be right! Why is it a cause of such anger or such a mindless defense of big breasts, solely because I made an observation, without attacking Proof, that I thought the comments were so superficial that it was demeaning? It was not then nor since an attack on the size of womens breasts, just an innocent observation about what I felt was the tone of the post. I said many times I understood Proof’s meaning, it was the appearance of the sultry, scantily clad Ms. Hayworth juxtapositioned against the soldier and his mission, which I found questionable.

That was the sole intent of my comments, not an endless debate about breast size. But, speaking of breasts, I have been attacked here as to my own manhood because I simply do not judge the worth, the value or attractiveness of a woman on the size of her breasts and even the females here find that objectionable.

Nieman, I agree it is boring. Every one here can read your comments and take their meaning. Trying to pull a Bambi and “clarify” in a later comment while you get in as many snarky digs as possible just reinforces the original opinions.

My original point and really only point is that appreciating the curvaceous and well-endowed woman does not make a man crass or necessarily motivated by sexual obsession.

And I’m sure there were lots of nice gals in those brothels and I applaud their entrepreneurial endeavors, but there is a reason the Navy tested its sailors returning from a WestPac deployment for STDs and later HIV before they let them off the ship. There is a reason that Navy hospitals test for STDs when a woman presents with vaginal irritation and her husband has just returned from a WestPac tour. I don’t know if they still do, but it was SOP during the Vietnam years and at least up through the late ‘80s.

Pal2Pal: You just cannot deal with the idea that someone can object to the appearance of something, especially if you decide in your narrow view of the world that it might attack your god of big breasts. You are either grossly ignorant of the English language or consciously dishonest in everything you say. You have, not once, referred to any quotation of mine about or against big breasts, therefore, you knowingly want to ignore my original observations for you own ridiculous purposes. That is dishonest!

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

What the hell is pull a bambi, is that something sexual you do to your husband? I have never heard that outside a movie about killing a baby deer!

Rita was built like a woman, I never understand the fascination that guys have with girls built like 10 year-old boys (as others have noted as well). Sounds like some issues I’m not credentialed to diagnose, although I occasionally throw on my pop-psychologist hat.

And enough with the quibbling guys, you’ve went far past boring the rest of us to tears.

I like the Peck story too.

Hoss: You have only commented under this post once and you are already beyond boring, wrong about everything and like Pal2Pal, incredibly obtuse. But, otherwise a fine fellow! smile

So my question is when a female with those bump things wears a really tight sweater cut down low to show off the cleavage…

They don’t want you to notice do they?

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

You know women have had their own eye candy down thru time. My Mother and Aunt were gaga over Valentino and Erol Flynn, there was Clark Gable, Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Tom Cruise, Keven Kostner, Patrick Swayze, Kurt Russell, DiCaprio, or Russell Crowe (the last two escape me, but everyone to their own taste). But every generation has had their men who were often filmed sans shirt or all sweaty and sexy looking, just like they have had well built women in seductive outfits.

Wow.  Mrs (or Ms?) Hayworth was very, very attractive.  NO doubt about that.  But, I just wanted to say that I have never, ever seen so many posts on one topic on Say Anything...boobs rule : ) G’night all.

I didn’t even know who Rita Hayworth was until I read Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.

Great, great short story.  I’d say King’s short stories are actually better than his novels.

Ah, yes, Rita reigned at a time when women were real women and not silly girls and men were men and not adolescent boys (or queers either).
