Free Wireless Internet
San Francisco is setting its sights on free, city-wide wireless internet.
While I'm sure there aren't many people upset with the idea of free wireless internet I'd like to point out that is is not the government's responsibility to provide it for a number of reasons.
If the government starts providing internet access to citizens it will drive private ISP's out of business. Once those are gone the government will be in charge of providing you with access to the internet. Is that something we really want? What if politicians were to suddenly decide that they no longer want people reading all those troublesome political blogs out there?
And you know that government isn't going to run the internet very well. If you need proof please reference your local DMV. Service and reliability would stay higher if internet access remained a private industry.
Plus, think of all the jobs that would be lost if the ISP's went out of business. That wouldn't have a very nice effect on the economy.
I'd rather the internet and access to it be in the hands of private companies.
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom set a goal on Thursday of providing free wireless Internet activity in his city that sees itself as a vanguard of the Internet revolution.
"We will not stop until every San Franciscan has access to free wireless Internet service," he said in his annual state of the city address. "These technologies will connect our residents to the skills and the jobs of the new economy."
