Fred Thompson On Change

The buzzword of the debates tonight seemed to be “change.” Everyone seemed to think it was a good thing, but they all seemed to have differing opinions on what it means.

Personally, I thought Fred Thompson had a pretty good response on the issue:

FDT: Well, you know, we’re all talking about change now, we had a-- some folks vote in Iowa and everybody came out of there talking about change. Change has been a part of every election since the dawn of elections, if you weren’t an incumbent. I think that what is more important is leadership and what is more important, as a part of leadership is telling the American people the truth and having the courage to do that. Telling the American people, for example, we were talking about social security.  Something everybody knows, nobody wants to talk about. That the war is going to be protracted, probably, it’s going it take some time and more resources than we’ve been devoting as a percentage of our economy, that we’re not going to be energy independent in a few years, it’s going to take a longer time and we’re going to have to move that big battleship as much as we can in had a short period of time as we can, but it’s not around the corner, that we’re spending our next generation’s money. And we’re bankrupting them in many respects as far as our entitlement programs are concerned. Those are true and we are going to have to go to the American people and say, here is the deal, here is what we need to do. Let’s do what generations have done in times past, come together and do the right thing and that’s the change that we need. I wish we could change to that.

Fred’s willingness to talk about the tough issues nobody else wants to talk about has been both a curse and a blessing.  A curse because talking about serious and complicated issues like Social Security does lend itself well to the five or ten second sound bites the media likes.  A blessing because it shows us that Thompson doesn’t give a damn his his answers are good sound bites, he cares about policy.

Easily the most overworked, tired cliche of this election.

As if change for changes’ sake is supposed to automatically be a good thing.

Come to think of it, every single Democratic candidate thinks that ‘change’ means bigger government, bigger deficits, and higher taxes.

Oh yeah, we’re really breaking new ground here!

Fred is OK by me, but he needs some fricken communication lessons FAST! He’s looking uninterested, slow, doesn’t seem passionate. Fred may be the best conservative but he better get himself a communication consultant because people just will not vote for him if he can’t match the fire of his opponent. For an actor, I think his ability to emulate intensity and empathy with the average man is crap. Truthful and thoughtful are GOOD but not enough. FRED step it UP!!!!

Douglas Krell on January 7, 2008 at 02:46 am

He’s looking uninterested, slow, doesn’t seem passionate.

Why on earth do you want an anxious, animated and insincere candidate?

He works as many of us do, analytically.

people just will not vote for him if he can’t match the fire of his opponent.

Why are people looking for fire instead of who knows how to start, maintain and put out the fire? This makes no sense to me at all, maybe you can explain it to me real fast with animation and don’t forget the passion, lots and lots of passion...otherwise, I’m not entertained.

For an actor, I think his ability to emulate intensity and empathy with the average man is crap.

You don’t know that every part that he has ever played has been exactly who he is, a leader? He wasn’t ever really acting...you don’t know anything about his past other than what you’ve heard, eh??

http://www.fred08.com

You might start with his biography then principles, issues and then his white papers.

Come on man, this is about the presidency and your duty to your country, not your next date.

Winghunter:  The sad reality is this; the next pesident will not be chosen by contributors to SAYANYTHING. Voters in these United States are relatively shallow, disinterested in details and awed by charisma. The Framers would be aghast. Like it or not, Krell has defined Fred Thompson’s dilemma: no passion, no fire and an abysmal style of delivery. In a nation fascinated by celebrity stardom, Thompson comes off as dull, dull, dull.

Voters in these United States are relatively shallow, disinterested in details and awed by charisma.

Perhaps. Let’s start changing it back to what it’s supposed to be...right now would be a good time for me, and you?

The Framers would be aghast.

They’ld never have allowed it to get this bad...can’t you hear the flintlocks going off?

Like it or not, Krell has defined Fred Thompson’s dilemma: no passion, no fire and an abysmal style of delivery. In a nation fascinated by celebrity stardom, Thompson comes off as dull, dull, dull.

It’s not a question of “like or not”, it’s a question of what’s right or not.
If we keep surrendering to what is clearly wrong, how could we possibly expect a drop of right to come out of it?

AND did you see the response I left just above yours?? Of course you did, otherwise you wouldn’t have addressed your response to me. However then, I can’t quite understand why you would offer the same drool of emotional entertainment that I went to such great lengths to show for what it is...a depravity of disloyalty and ignorance surrendered to and participated in by poster children for prophylactics. Now, I’m sure you wouldn’t follow Krell’s stumbling but,...Krell, Krell is a brand name of prophylactic also, eh?  That’s pretty funny.

In a nation fascinated by celebrity stardom, Thompson comes off as dull, dull, dull.

Well I don’t agree that Thompson is that dull, but even if he is, perhaps dull is underrated.

Thompson isn’t my guy (he’s my number two) but I will concede that Thompson, of all the candidates, is the idea guy and policy wonk.

Why does a candidate have to do jumping jacks to qualify for the presidency?

Ken McCracken on January 7, 2008 at 05:43 am

Well I don’t agree that Thompson is that dull, but even if he is, perhaps dull is underrated.

The excitement is n-e-v-e-r out of the emotion of a president ( a president is statesmanlike, not salesmanlike. ) it is in what he is saying.

Thompson isn’t my guy (he’s my number two)

We know people who know you’ll come around.

but I will concede that Thompson, of all the candidates, is the idea guy and policy wonk.

Idea guy; policy guy; decision guy; goto guy; do-it-right-the-fist-time guy; leadership guy and even dry humor guy...that covers being the president guy and then some. No one else comes close but, don’t take my word for it, go over the same ton of research I did and you’ll know for sure.

Why does a candidate have to do jumping jacks to qualify for the presidency?

By jove, I do believe doing the right thing for its sake alone is spreading already. Hot damn, next!

I have to concur with DK.  There is nothing wrong with Freds message but his delivery comes off slow and labored. I think he also tells the truth and that can be a bit ‘doom and gloom’ for the majority of voters.

We want pretty pictures and promises.

IMHO Fred is done, he just doesn’t know it yet.

According to Hillary, she’s given us 35 years of change! Personally, I prefer folding money!

I don’t think Fred is at all dull. As A matter of fact I find the other candidates dull and confused. Fred is relaxed, sincere and very interesting. He is right on target with Conservative issues. He is not out there promising everything right and left from the Fed Government because that is not what we need! “Change”? For a change we don’t need another politician out there making promises that will end up coming out of the Tax payers pockets! Fred is the best candidate because he stands for what American is all about, for a change.

I watched the movie Marie that was Fred Thompson’s first “acting” experience.  He played himself and I saw the same man in that movie that I see today.  I saw a man willing to stand up for what is right and core principles.

Some people think that Fred Thompson will have a huge following of people who are movie star struck and have followed his acting career.  When I was first told to look at Fred Thompson as a political candidate my reaction was “Fred who?”.  I did remember having seen him in L&O after I saw a picture of him but his acting isn’t what has made an impression on me.  I have gone to the websites of all of the candidates, read their speeches, attended a few meetings to hear them speak in person, and I have looked at where they stand on various issues.
I really don’t care for politicians that look and sound like a salesman on one of those 30 minutes advertisments.  I want a President that has the integrity, substance, knowledge and experience to lead this country.  I think each candidate running in the Republican party does have something to offer.
I have found issues that I cannot compromise on and do not agree with when looking at all candidates but one.  I have found that I can agree with Fred Thompson 98% of the time and that is the reason I support Fred.  I am looking for a candidate that is not only consistent on social issues but that I can trust to be consistent and level headed when it is time to make decisions concerning our military, foreign policy, and the economy.  I really don’t care how much hair the candidate has or how many wrinkles they have on their face.  I will not be voting on a model for men’s underwear.  I am voting for a President and I do not understand why some people just don’t get it.

That would be good if we could have it all over in 22 minutes, scripted, and sell some corn flakes in between takes while I go to the Bathroom.

But, this is real life.  Keep telling yourself, It’s only a movie, it’s only a movie.  Fred is a one note Johnny reading s short script.

Islam attacks and Fred says, “Cut Taxes”.

Bird Flu breaks out and Fred says, “Lower Taxes”.

Earthquake in California and Fred says, “No taxes for Californians”.

I’m sorry about it all boys and girls but Fred has less chance than a Snowball has in Hell.

It’s Rudy, Romney, McCain and Huck.  That’s everyone on the menu.  No special orders, no substitutions.

It’s all over for Fred.  What would you need to convince you to quit chasing the tail of a dog that won’t hunt?  Didn’t the last couple debates convince you?  He’s completely outclassed and out shown by everyone else on the dais.

I guess it’s harmless enough.  We all believe in something that seems foolish to outsiders.  On this one I’m an unbeliever.

That’s actually the silliest thing I’ve ever heard.  Fred has been rather outspoken about national security and health issues.  Saying that Fred’s answer to Islamic extremism is “lowering taxes” is just plain baloney, and you know it Gene.

Yes Rob, It’s silly, It’s hyperbole to prove a point.

Fred’s approach to problems we have as a country is not well defined a cut-taxes mantra.

Sometimes Hyperbole makes the point, I just did.

The only problem with that point is Fred Thompson publicly refused to sign a “no-tax” pledge in full honesty and appreciation that situations can get turned sideways.

If that fact alone isn’t enough to satisfy your Liberal side, there are an abundance of dictatorships whose taxes provide the false bubble in the illusion of economic stability where you are free to choose any of them but, the trick is changing your mind back again when reality hits you in the kisser but, all exit visa’s are mysteriously denied.

Please, return to the Spin drawing board, we’ll be right here.

I didn’t see this before...I guess I was too busy laughing at the part I did read to notice.

You have no idea what the movie “Marie” is about, do you?

Search “Marie Ragghianti”.

Dishonest and ignorant attacks are very revealing and fuel support to your intended victim far beyond the normal flow of informtion...please, choose another subject at complete random or research Fred Thompson in order to gain what you think might be valid ammunition. Of course, by that time you’ll also become a supporter.

Whichever path you choose, Godspeed.
