Fred Thompson Is In?

This is nice news to wake up to:

Fred Dalton Thompson is planning to enter the presidential race over the Fourth of July holiday, announcing that week that he has already raised several million dollars and is being backed by insiders from the past three Republican administrations, Thompson advisers told The Politico.

I wonder how much the pucker factor has increased among the other hopefuls - on both sides?

I like Thompson but I’m a little skeptical of his having “insiders” from previous administrations on his side.  He would probably be best off if he gave the big F-U to “insiders”.

brenarlo on May 30, 2007 at 08:04 am

I agree with Brett on this one. I don’t know a lot about Fred, but have liked what I have seen. I would love to see a candidate like him, who has such a large public following, is well known to so many people, as it could be very useful to him. Not only that I would like to see him run HARD to the right. In doing so we could have a candidate who will stand up for constitutional conservative values. I have heard time and again how a candidate who will run as a conservative on social, defense, and spending issues will always do well. The problem seems to be these candidates, incumbent or not, wither under the excoriation of the main stream media. (Which makes Rush Limbaugh’s euphemism ‘drive by media’ accurate indeed.)

Mr. Thompson may do precisely that, I don’t know. I am, nevertheless, weary of spineless Republicans who get elected and act like liberals when it comes to spending, defense, immigration, and our culture and society in general. It seems to only make me disinterested in politics, and tempts me to be more cynical.

Pilgrim, I hope for certain that McCain realizes that he has no hope in hell to even win the nomination of the Republican party!

A source close to Thompson says it ain’t necessarily so!

“There will be no July 4 announcement… There was some discussion of a June 4 beginning of fundraising; that’s the date checks will be collected. I suspect that’s where there was some confusion.”

The forthcoming announcement will be that Thompson is “testing the waters.” While Thompson is in that not-quite-announced-candidate stage, he will be able to complete previously committed paid appearances and speeches and continue work his work on ABC radio and filling in for Paul Harvey. He is not lining up additional paid speeches or appearances.

It may be in July, but not July 4.

I have long supported the idea of a Fred Thompson candidacy, he has the ability, like Reagan and so unlike George-II, to deliver an effective, passionate speech and thereby gain support from the people for his policies; but, and you knew a BUT was coming, the Democrats have already prepared an anti-Thompson, negative attack campaign, and if elected he would have a hate filled Democrat Party to oppose his ever move. So, while this is encouraging in many ways, let is not get giddy with excitement until the battle begins in earnest - it will ne basty!

brenarlo,

I agree that having supporters from past administrations comes with a bit of a caveat, but faced with the absolute ruthlessness of the demos you have to consider which is worse - old sharks or wide-eyed neophytes. I think that these waters need some sharks. There are plenty on the other side.

Neiman,

Your point is well taken, but (of course!) you ought to have taken it one step farther.  One of the most fervent hopes of those of us who support a Thompson candidacy is that the force of his argument and the strength of his presence will be sufficient to regain control for the GOP of at least the Senate.

The next president is all but certain to face at least one, and quite possible three Supreme Court vacancies.  The battles over those nominations, regardless of who sits in the White House, will make Fallujah seem like a Methodist picnic on a balmy Sunday afternoon.

Dallas,

The vast majority of Hollywood’s denizens are liberals, and proud of it.  This is not surprising.  They are, after all, folks whose success in life, whose fame and fortune, are based on a talent for fantasy and make believe.  They are imaginative, creative artists, whose relationship with reality is often most charitably described as tenuous.  So of course they’re liberals.

Republicans celebrate the rare Hollywood conservative precisely because there are so few of them.  Coal and diamonds have the same chemical composition.  But while coal has a current market value of somewhere between $30 and $50 per ton, diamonds are roughly 100 times that amount.... per carat.

They don’t celebrate them, they put them up for office.  You celebrate MLK, Rosa Parks, (I don’t know why only civil right activists come to mind) or any number of great Americans who deserve it. But I guess to celebrate a conservitive actor is to put them up for office.

At least Mr. Thompson is well-spoken.  Just out of geniune curiosity, what legistlation has is name on it when he was a senator?  I haven’t really done any research on him.  I was just pointing out how the right broad-brushed Hollywood and yet gets politians from it.  I know...the left broad-brushes to, so save your examples and comments on my last statement, this thread is about Fred.

Yeah, right! Like Fred Thompson is Mr. Hollywood! Maybe if Dullass did his homework, he would know that Fred Thompson was a lawyer who was first asked to play himself in a movie. Fred Dalton Thompson
Fredo’s roots are not Hollywood and Vine, more like Main St. USA.

Hey Goof,

What’s your point?  I never said anything about him being a conservitive or not.  I also never said if he would be a good candidate or not.  Next time you post, you should have a point instead of ignorantly rambling about nothing.

Dallas on May 31, 2007 at 08:37 am

Dallas,

I will gladly acknowledge your point about Fred Thompson’s lack of self-named major legislation, if you will list the major, self-named legislative accomplishments of John Edwards, Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton, John F. Kerry, and former Senator Al Gore.

Thompson, incidentally, served eight and a half years in the US Senate.  The above named Democrat presidential wannabes’ Senate service totals more than 45 years.

I (along with several other legislators) am working with the Draft Fred Thompson campaign.  We are building support in North Dakota for a potential Thompson candidacy, and hope to make an announcement soon.  The response so far has been tremendous.

I’ll keep you updated on our efforts in the next few days.

Bat,

Actually, I was just asking a question.  I really was not wanting to make a case that he wasn’t qualified.

I said, “At least Mr. Thompson is well-spoken.  Just out of geniune curiosity, what legistlation has is name on it when he was a senator?  I haven’t really done any research on him.”

Don’t get so defensive.  I tried to phrase my question in the least antagonistic way possible, but I guess there is no way to have an informative discussion.  He’s your boy, I just thought you could answer a question for me.  Since he is not running yet, I haven’t really done any research on him.  At no time in this thread have I questioned his qualifications or actions, I prefer to be more informed if/when I do.

Dallas,

Please don’t get so anxious.  I didn’t take your question to be an attack on Thompson.  I saw it as an opportunity to make a point instead.  The Democrats I mentioned all have experience in the Senate, and none have any record of signature legislative accomplishment.

OTOH, we could extend the discussion on the GOP side to include John McCain, for example, whose most renown bit of legislative handiwork, the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act is, next to any sort of tax increases, the single most objectionable bill signed into law in the past 100 years.

Many commentators and pundits watching the recent GOP debate thought Rudy Giuliani’s put down of Ron Paul was the evening’s piece de resistance.  But Ron Paul is a candidate of no consequence who is too enamored of the sound of his own voice to realize he has made a fool of himself.

But Mitt Romney’s remark about McCain-Kennedy doing to education what McCain-Feingold has done to national election campaigns was both masterful and pertinent.

If you inferred that I took offense at your question, I apologize for leaving you with that impression.

Joel,

Agreed.

Now if only they’d get rid of Jack McCoy, who is becoming more and more of a wuss these past few season, and instead bring back Abby “If I could, I’d stick the needle in your arm myself” Carmichael.  She’s smart, tough, and drop-dead gorgeous.

Barring some unforeseen entrant Fred will most likely be my choice. He did actually impede crap legislation on several occasions. That is a start.

“I’ve spoken to Fred today, and although he told me he has not made a firm decision about his political future, he felt that given the creative and scheduling constraints of the upcoming season, he asked to be released from his responsibilities to the show,” “Law & Order” creator/executive producer Dick Wolf said Wednesday. “I will sincerely miss working with him on a regular basis, and I obviously wish him the best of luck with whatever the future holds.”

The statement came hours after news reports indicated that Thompson will form a presidential committee this week.

One step closer.

Many commentators and pundits watching the recent GOP debate thought Rudy Giuliani’s put down of Ron Paul was the evening’s piece de resistance.

Certainly this is the case, if one contemplates how many leftard antiwar brains exploded when Giuliani said that…

Carrick on May 31, 2007 at 03:42 pm

Carrick,

I am not disparaging Rudy’s comments, which were immediate, unscripted, and clearly heartfelt.  Indeed, what Rudy said with such eloquence certainly needed to be said.  And will likely need to be said again, and again.

However, I stand by my assessment that Romney’s slap at McCain was far more significant and pertinent to a debate among GOP candidates.

Perhaps you will agree with me however, that where the “truthers” and “nutroots” are concerned, a more interesting, and appropriate discussion would be a debate between Ann Coulter and Rosie O’Donnell… a rhetorical bout between Evander Holyfield and “Butterbean” so to speak.

Coulter vs O’Donnell would be a sight to see.  Especially if they didn’t cut to commercials, or try and limit the “debate”.

I agreed 100% with Giuliani’s remarks, btw.  Just in case there was any doubt.  Ron Paul is a nothing candidate, but he acts as a great foil for the real truth to be told.

Are we talking a verbal debate here or a wrestling match?  Because I’m pretty sure it’d become the latter, and if so my money would be on Rosie all the way.

Coulter looks wiry and manishly strong, but Rosie would bulldoze her right into the ground.  I’m sure of it.

A Coulter vs. O’Donnell debate.  Pehaps it could be set in an octagon style set.  Talk about pay-per-view.  This Liberal would love to watch those nutbags hash it out.
