Fred Thompson Goes After Bush Administration On Guns

Earlier this week I posted on a brief filed by the Bush administration in the Heller 2nd amendment case contending that the right to keep and bear arms doesn’t extend to citizens being able to keep and bear any arm of their choosing.  Now Fred Thompson is criticizing the Bush administration over the brief, saying Bush’s layers are “overlawyering” the issue.

The Fred Thompson for President, South Carolina bus tour reached Spartanburg today, where the Law & Order TV star candidate fielded questions at Papa’s Breakfast Nook from Charlotte, N.C.’s WBT-AM radio talk show host Jeff Katz.

Asked his opinion of the Second Amendment and the Solicitor General’s request that the DC Circuit Court remand the appeal back to the trial court for “fact-finding”, the lawyer turned Senator from Tennessee said the Bush Administration was “overlawyering” and stated that he opposed remand and that the case should move forward to the U.S. Supreme Court.

From the viewpoint of gun owners, I’m not sure there’s a better candidate in the field than Fred Thompson.

Rob:  “Overlawyering” Wow!! Now there’s some potent language of outrage from the most conservative candidate! Did Thompson also hurl his chai-latte across the room in a show of fury?

If thats his idea of “going after” opponents on a fundamntal constitutional rights issue, he should prove to be totally awesome when battling Hugo Chavez or Ahmadinijad!

I can hear it now… “Cease, you cad! You’re OVERLAWYERING!!” Hahaha

I’d be more amused by Fred on this issue if he had not FIRST refused to pursue the Clinton’s regarding the CHINESE donations to their campaign funds AS CHAIR OF THE SENATE COMMITTEE ASSIGNED TO INVESTIGATE THAT INCIDENT - being appointed as the CHAIR PERSON BECAUSE HE WAS A FORMER WATERGATE PROSECUTOR.

Under the cirsucmstances, since he refused to pursue the RIGHTFUL PROSECUTION of the DIM LIBERAL CLINTONS on felony charges amounting to TREASON, I’m not very entertained by his castigation of President Bush.

Even though I am a powerful supporter of the SECOND AMENDMENT.

Oh, yeah, I’m also a powerful supporter of the FIRST AMENDMENT, too - unlike Fred Thompson, of McCain Feingold THOMPSON. [Check with Ann Coulter and George Will, et al]

So, you’re not actually disagreeing with Thompson here, but criticizing his use of adjectives?

Wake me up when you post a comment worth reading.

Rob: Actually I said worse on your ‘Exit Poll Romney’ post - or better, depending on one’s point-of-view.

STOP THE PRESSES!

Jason Spencer, reporter for the Spartanburg Herald - Journal who was covering this interview was asked why they hadn’t reported Fred’s comment on the delay tactic by the Bush administration where his quoted response was;

Thanks for your interest, and for your feedback. I’ve heard Thompson talk about the issue before, but commenting on something that he has no control over—a pending Supreme Court decision—seems to be simply pandering to the voters. That’s why it was left out.

No control over as a presidential candidate who therefore must be pandering....Can you believe this idiot!?!?

Rob: Pride is not an issue. But, you did overlook some really important stats on Mitt. He won the liberal vote, the evangelical vote and got a whopping 58% just for being from Michigan.

Winghunter: “Thompson pandering..” Good post! Thats exactly how the MSM manipulates what we know, who we hear and how we vote! Last week they turned their guns on McCain in Michigan and, I predict, they will turn them on Fred in SC - or worse - ignore him.  The MSM has the general election set: Obama and Romney.

What does this have to do with the Second Amendment genius?? What does this have to do with Bush playing more games??

...if he had not FIRST refused to pursue the Clinton’s regarding the CHINESE donations to their campaign funds

While John Glenn played legislative games to hold up the investigation, liberal agents spirited every witness or suspect back to China inwhich 22 people were eventually convicted. This is hard fact of every credible report on this issue and without a good initial investigation they wouldn’t have caught a soul. 22 is a very good conviction rate there Spinner.

Aren’t you tired of being proven ignorant? Why don’t you research this instead of parroting crap you hear from other idiots when you know damn well there is someone here who knows better and will delightfully jam it back down your throat!? Oh, I get it, you’re just a masochist in training.

THEN you bring up McCain-Feingold, AGAIN!? That does it! Hey Rob! Lets get a IQ test for entrance into this forum...only people with IQ’s ABOVE the number of their shoe size is allowed to respond...What do ya’ think?

Thompson pandering..” Good post! Thats exactly how the MSM manipulates what we know, who we hear and how we vote!

Yup, that was the point. Thank you. I’m taking it over to Cliff Kincaid at AIM also. ( Accuracy In Media )

But since I’ve got you here...what is this?

Wow!! Now, I don’t know where you were brought up but, anyone with an ounce of class and respect for the office itself ( and who is also running for that same office ) doesn’t berate the POTUS over a simple delay tactic that he can straighten out when he gets in office. It has no possible way of damaging our rights under the circumstances as they are now and Fred very well understands that. Fred also said,

“I strongly support the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. Gun control is touted as a major crime-control measure. But some of the places with the strictest gun-control laws also have high violent-crime rates. Disarming law-abiding citizens does not prevent crime. The answer to violent crime is smart, effective, and aggressive law enforcement. The real effect of these gun-control measures is to place onerous restrictions on law-abiding citizens who use firearms for such legal activities as self-defense, sport-shooting, hunting, and collecting. I am committed to:

*Strictly enforcing existing laws and severely punishing violent criminals.

*Protecting the rights individual Americans enjoy under the Second Amendment.” - FDT

You get the drift here or what?

Fred Thompson: a maverick conservative who loves the law

Washington - Just a couple of weeks after the 1999 shooting massacre at Columbine High School, with emotions still raw and bipartisan calls for tougher action against crime, Sen. Fred Thompson (R) of Tennessee convened a hearing whose title, “Federalism and Crime Control,” sounded like a law class.

In his opening remarks, Senator Thompson pointedly noted his vote a few years earlier against a school gun ban. It should not have become law, he suggested, nor should Washington enact new laws now. “It’s a deeply rooted constitutional principle that the general police power belongs to the states,” he said, before calling a parade of scholarly witnesses to buttress his argument.

It was an odd time for a dispassionate look at federalist theory. Fifteen people had been killed in one of the worst school shootings in US history. Even the National Rifle Association had scaled back its annual meeting.

But in many ways, it was signature Thompson: a defiant faith in his own judgment, an indifference to political fallout, and a near zealotry about the limits of government. A few days after his hearing, he not only opposed a juvenile-justice overhaul backed by his own party but was one of just three senators to vote against funds for a set of antiviolence programs.

“In all of the years I worked for him and all the vote memos and summaries I wrote for him, he never once wanted to know what the [party] leadership wanted him to do,” recalls Bill Outhier, a former Senate aide. “It stemmed from a larger view of his role in the Senate, which was not to do things for political reasons but to do them because he thought they were right."…
