Fred Thompson Drawing Crowds In South Carolina

At least according to this I just got from one of his campaign people:

How are things going on South Carolina?  Twice today, we have had to shut down an event because the crowds to see Fred Thompson got so big that they exceeded capacity for the venue.

Hopefully that will translate into some climbing poll numbers soon.  But it certainly seems to have led to a jump in contributions to Fred’s campaign.  Back around the 1st of the year Fred set a fund raising goal of $540,000 by January 11th.  The campaign hit that goal just before midnight on January 10th according to the total figure posted on their website.  $540,000 in about ten days isn’t a bad total to raise, but now just a day after hitting that goal Fred’s total is at $752,000 meaning that contributions to the campaign have accelerated with approximately $212,000 coming in just in the last 24 hours or so.

These numbers aren’t exact as they’re based on my observations of the total shown on Fred’s website, but they’re clearly indicative of a surge of support for the campaign.

If you’d like to get in on that surge of support, contribute a little money here.

The surge will never work and only lead to more casualties, so I’ve heard.

At least when George Bush was reading My Pet Goat, he genuinely had no idea Manhattan was being terrorized. And it wasn’t by his own plane.

I’m not a Fredhead, but I like Fred Thompson and would like to see him stay in the race at least until after MegaTuesday. However, I can’t say I’m too impressed with raising $752,000 over 11 days when Mitt Romney raised over $5 million the day after New Hampshire. All I’ve heard is how much money Romney is spending. Yes, he has put $17 mil. of his own money into the campaign, mostly spent on ads to introduce himself and get some name recognition to play catch up with Rudy, Fred and McCain. But $17 mil is a drop in the bucket compared to the $80-$90 million his campaign has raised.

I would like to see Fred do better and if he can make to Super Tuesday he probably has a chance. I am not too thrilled about all of these Liberals/rinos posing as republicans. I don’t see a lot of difference between Rudy and Hillary except one has more hair.

The only reason ol’ lazyboy Fred got into the race at all is because y’all were begging him, because you like TV.  Now you find out how silly y’all were and that’s the end of Fred.  I hear there’s a “growing calls for Bloomberg” nowadays.  Is that you guys, too?

Welvis on January 12, 2008 at 07:21 am

I think if Bloomberg gets into the race it will hurt the dems.

So the real question is, WHO does Fred take votes from in South Carolina?

It really is all moot until Michigan.  If McCain can get another liberal-powered win in Michigan, he will be the prohibitive favorite for SC (as well as the whole damned nomination).  If Romney wins MI (Rasmussen today has him ahead and KOS is lobbying cross-over dems for him), Romney will then surge in SC and McCain will fade badly.

I personally think that Thompson takes votes from Huckabee more than anyone.

If Thompson surges and takes votes from Huck, McCain fades after losing MI to Romney and Romney bounces, Romney could actually win SC in a close one.

Both MI and SC are “winner-take-all” states.

My best-case scenario would be Romney to win SC with Fred coming in strong second.  Romney and Thompson should team up (ala Huckabee/McCain) to bring down the Huck/McCain Train.  By establishing mutual respect now, this would open things to a Romney/Thompson ticket later (dream ticket IMHO).

BMitchell: “A Romney/Thompson dream ticket”!!?? Methinks you are the one who is dreaming. Ain’t ever gonna happen for more reasons than bandwidth allows for explanation. So, I limit myself to one fact: Thompson will never agree to it.

Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other vews.

Bill Mitchell: Romney/Thompson is also my dream ticket. Question: I think I read somewhere that Michigan delegates are awarded by Congressional District, not winner take all. Anyone know for sure?

Pal2Pal on January 12, 2008 at 09:50 am

pparets: If this election is solely about the Supreme Court then the last person Repubs should trust is McCain, well maybe that should be McCain and Paul.

Michigan is “winner-take-all”.  However, they are being docked for a certain number of delegates (not sure how many) for going early.

WHY IS ROMNEY/THOMPSON MY DREM TICKET:

Simple, Romney brings the experience gravitas and Thompson brings the conservative gravitas.

Don’t be so sure Thompson would not agree to this.

Bill Mitchell on January 12, 2008 at 10:42 am

Michigan is “winner-take-all by District” whatever that means. I assumed it meant by Congressional District, but I bow to those who know more than I do.

The DNC is punishing Michigan for moving its primary up by refusing to seat any dem delegates at the convention. Obama and Edwards withdrew, so only Hillary is on the ballot, Dems can vote uncommitted. The RNC penalized the Michigan Republicans by cutting their delegates in half. Both the RNC and DNC are stupid. The DNC did the same thing to Florida. Seems really dumb to me, but what do I know.

Pparets, don’t be so sure.

That would be very similar to the Reagan/Bush teaming way back when. Ronnie was the strong conservative and Bush Sr. was a left of center moderate. Ronnie pulled him more to the right.

It’s not that different from Thompson/Romney

It’s all political bullshit. Liberals (and Robert108) lie and spin and twist and obscure and distract and cheat to protect their guys and hurt the opposing team. It’s like wrestling. They distract the ref while their team mate hits you with a chair. There’s no rule they won’t break, no law they won’t skirt, no crime they won’t forgive as long as they can win.
