Fred Thompson And “Leave Me Alone” Conservatism

I often tell people who want to try and place me in one political category or another that I am a “leave me alone” sort of conservative.  Although I’m staunchly pro-life, I don’t really care that much about things like gay marriage and I think the solution to most content problems on radio or television is for people to just switch stations.  Generally, I’d just like to go through my life and about my business with as little interaction with the government as possible.  I recognize that there are some things the government needs to do - such as law enforcement, roads, etc. - but outside of those basic things I’d just as soon be on my own.

It is because I’m that kind of conservative that I support Fred Thompson for President, and Erik Erickson at Redstate apparently feels the same way:

Fred is not a religious conservative. He’s a “leave me the heck alone” conservative. . . .

I want an across the board pro-life, pro-defense, small goverment, pro-entrepreneur conservative. And of the three men who fit the bill, I think Fred offers the most with the least baggage. He’ll make sure the government leaves me the heck alone.

Running through the candidates:

Rudy Giuliani is pro-choice, anti-gun and supported New York as a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants.

Mitt Romney was pro-choice before he decided to run for President, pushed a socialized medicine system through the state legislature in Massachusetts and praised an amnesty bill in Congress for illegal immigrants.

Mike Huckabee is a tax-hiking nanny stater who would do things like institute a national smoking ban.

So who, of the serious candidates, does that leave us with?

Fred Thompson.
