Fred Thompson And “Leave Me Alone” Conservatism

I often tell people who want to try and place me in one political category or another that I am a “leave me alone” sort of conservative. Although I’m staunchly pro-life, I don’t really care that much about things like gay marriage and I think the solution to most content problems on radio or television is for people to just switch stations. Generally, I’d just like to go through my life and about my business with as little interaction with the government as possible. I recognize that there are some things the government needs to do – such as law enforcement, roads, etc. – but outside of those basic things I’d just as soon be on my own.
It is because I’m that kind of conservative that I support Fred Thompson for President, and Erik Erickson at Redstate apparently feels the same way:

Fred is not a religious conservative. He’s a “leave me the heck alone” conservative. . . .
I want an across the board pro-life, pro-defense, small goverment, pro-entrepreneur conservative. And of the three men who fit the bill, I think Fred offers the most with the least baggage. He’ll make sure the government leaves me the heck alone.

Running through the candidates:
Rudy Giuliani is pro-choice, anti-gun and supported New York as a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants.
Mitt Romney was pro-choice before he decided to run for President, pushed a socialized medicine system through the state legislature in Massachusetts and praised an amnesty bill in Congress for illegal immigrants.
Mike Huckabee is a tax-hiking nanny stater who would do things like institute a national smoking ban.
So who, of the serious candidates, does that leave us with?
Fred Thompson.

    I like Fred!…

What about Ron Paul? Isn’t he serious?

    As serious as a strait-jacket.

    Okay – How about McCain?

Yep, Fred’s the man unless you happen to be a pro-choice conservative.

Good thing you are a pro-abortion leftard then, eh, ews?

Zsa Zsa likes Fred, so does Rob, so do many people, so do I; but so far he is not making the sale, and as bad as it makes Thompson supporters feel, I don’t think he has the fire in the belly to win.

Further, none of the Republicans, including Fred are offering the voters a vision of how they will change America in a way that benefits them all – absent that vision, they cannot win. Why would I offer money or get out the vote work? Just because I hate Hillary? Hate can be a powerful motivator, but I also hate voting for and putting anyone in office, that does not have a clear, easy to understand vision of where they want to take America; or core values that are so solid I can absolutely rely upon them to make decisions based on those values. Fred has not demonstrated his ability to form and articulate such a vision and/or that he has some core values on key issues that he will no compromise.

Zsa Zsa: I am really not talking to you or Rob, just thinking aloud under this thread.

That is because he is a Democrat.

ROB: “So, who does that leave us with…?” Well, I like Fred too, but Fred Thompson isn’t going to win the nomination, much less the Presidency. Oh, I know, I know. We have to stand by our principles. Custer stood by his principles too. But frankly, the likelyhood of getting ANY Republican into the White House in 08 is slim but not impossible. And, whether our candidiate is anyone’s version of a ‘true’ conservative becomes irrelevant when you consider the alternative.

The “Leave Me Alone” conservatives butt up against the “majority vote is not totalitarianism” social conservatives. Those conservatives outnumber us.

Rudy Giuliani: A trigger happy prosecutor that would bomb the shit out of Iran just to please Israel at any cost. Rudy may not be very likable in other aspects, but I believe Israel trumps.

Fred Thompson: Is among the most supportive of Israel, appears to be a more likable type of fella then Rudy, is closer to the right on many issues, may not be as eager to bomb Iran but still is willing for Israel.

So in the end their both members of the Council on Foreign Relations, while Rudy bent over for AIPAC, Fred doesn’t have to he already has.

Either way Israel First. So I don’t give two shits about either of them nor any of the Dems. For the same reasons Puppets all of them.

With exception of Ron Paul who has no chance in this puppet game.

ROB: “wasn’t that you…?” No, Rob, That wasn’t me. I’m the one who said that EVERY major nonpartisan poll shows Rudy Guiliani beating EVERY Democratic candidate. http://www.realclearpolitics.com. Can we just agree on one thing…? Convictions and principles aside, Fred Thompson isn’t going to win the nomination or the Presidency.

  • Puzzlefeet

You call that a major poll? Nice try, Rob.

Can aging N.D. resist change amid immigration debate?

Weren’t you the one telling us yesterday that no major poll shows any Republican candidate but Giuliani beating Hillary? Well there was a major national poll published today showing Giuliani, Fred, McCain, Romney and Huckabee all beating Hillary by about 3 – 5 points.

So let me say that your skills of political analysis leave something to be desired.

    Says you.

    Puzzled,

You call that a major poll? Nice try, Rob.

So polls that are inconvenient for Democrats don’t count.

    Gotcha.
