Fred Phelps Banned From The United Kingdom, Murderous Muslim Clerics Still Allowed

Part of me wants to say “Good, serves the hate monger right.” The other part of me thinks that this isn’t such a healthy sign for what is supposed to be a liberal democracy.

The Home Secretary has banned two extremist anti-gay preachers from entering Britain, a move that follows a decision to refuse entry to Geert Wilders, the Dutch anti-Muslim MP.
Fred Phelps and his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper, who belong to the US Westboro Baptist Church, were planning to come to the UK to protest outside a performance of a youth play called The Laramie Project, which recounts the death of gay university student Matthew Shepard who was killed in Laramie, Wyoming, in October 1998.
It was due to be performed at Queen Mary’s College in Basingstoke, Hampshire, tomorrow.
The pair have been known to picket US soldiers’ funerals, holding up banners with phrases such as “God Hates Fags” because they believe that their deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan are punishment for America’s tolerance of gays.

Free speech means free speech, whether it’s Republicans and Democrats (or Whigs and Tories) kvetching about one another or hateful bigots like Phelps polluting the air with nonsense. Perhaps it’s a little different because Phelps isn’t a citizen of the UK, but if the roles were reversed and Phelps were a citizen of Great Britain attempting to visit the US I’d say let him in and let him talk. Protest him. Debate him. Criticize him. But let him talk. Because, again, free speech means free speech.
But what’s interesting in the case of Great Britain is that even as they’re banishing Phelps, all sorts of extremist Muslim leaders are in Great Britain calling for a downfall of the government and the institution of Islamic rule.
Funny how those politically-correct double standards work.

    Bwahahaha… Phred Phelps… Good Lord!

Great Britain is not the United States. If they don’t want him, that’s their business. He’s not necessarily welcome here either, but he is an American.

BTW, has anyone seen Phred Phelps in that movie, “Small Town Gay Bar”?

How do the Islamists feel about the fancy lads?

  • robert108

The point of this is that they’re not concerned with the murdering Islamics, but very concerned about Fred Phelps. Why the double standard?

That would be Al Gore’s friend, Fred Phelps.

I know that many Brits are well aware of what is going on, but even less able to do anything about it, they having nothing quite like the Constitution for protection and instead living under the Ueber-Nanny State apparatus of the European Union.

    Alas, poor England.

They made a Faustian bargain in a pathetic attempt to keep socialism on life support

The Laramie Project is propaganda. The robbers that killed Matthew Shepard stated that they decided to rob him because they thought he was an easy target. It had nothing to do with his being gay if he was gay. The story is used to support the ” gay victims” agenda which undermines the fact the the poor guy was killed using violence and dare I say hate, for the money he had in his wallet and nothing else.

Last I read, the UK also requires the school children to watch Al Gore’s unsubstantiated and controversial film, Inconvenient Truth.

It’s scary when your leaders and system don’t even blink when feeding out false political propaganda. And they justify it as implemented for the greater good. As I’ve said before, the Bible says, NO LIE is of the truth.

First, I think it should always be pointed out the Fred Phelps is a democrat. Let’s let that albatross hang around their necks.

Second, Phelps telegraphed his intentions to a foreign country. I think it understandable that they don’t want to allow someone in just to protest. I would feel the same way of a bus load of Mexican citizens wanted to cross our border to protest immigration reform or whatever. If they come here and then protest, I wouldn’t kick them out, but if they ask for a visa for the express purpose of trying to influence our politics, sorry but visa denied. Hold your protest in your own country.

robert108, what double standard? Nothing in the above post mentions anything about “murdering Islamics”.

I think we’re somewhat in agreement here, Rob about the free speech issue. The point of contention seems to be that free speech as we know applies to our country. How other countries interpret what “free speech” means is for them to decide. In this country no one should be silenced, even the Phred Phelps’s.

England, Britain, or the UK, however they prefer to be referred to, are no longer the England of David Niven, James Bond or Rudyard Kipling — instead, they are closer to a dystopian 1984 or the run-down, Socialist-Islamified, shabby and besmirched has-been, generally-European area, of Alex DeLarge’s Clockwork Orange.

    No right to privacy.

No right to keep and bear arms.

No right to free speech, even though the right of the soap box was once a source of pride for the Brits.

I know that many Brits are well aware of what is going on, but even less able to do anything about it, they having nothing quite like the Constitution for protection and instead living under the Ueber-Nanny State apparatus of the European Union.

    Alas, poor England.

    Fred Phelps is a scumbag.

Fred? Come on back to PA, we got that piece of paper waiting for you. And we will so enjoy watching you do time at Laurel Highlands.

Great Britain is not the United States. If they don’t want him, that’s their business.

Sure, but there’s a higher ideal here. Free speech.

As much as I despise, say, disgruntled military members who spread nonsense about their employers I’d never ask them to be silenced.

Is that guy still after Carol-Anne? I thought the Magic Munchkin took care of him at the end of Poltergeist 3.

As long as we’re on the subject of Fred, anyone think there’s a chance we could fix Dino up with him or vice versa? It’s a match made in somewhere south of heaven.
