Flooding In N.H.

I grew up in a small town just outside of Keene, N.H. Keene is the third largest city in New Hampshire with a population of a little more than 20,000. I’ve never heard of flooding like this in Keene, but the city is in a valley, of sorts. So far 2* people are known to have died, hundreds are without their homes, and several buildings have been destroyed.

The Boston Globe
KEENE, N.H. — Rain-swollen rivers and streams disgorged floodwater yesterday into dozens of New England cities and towns, causing widespread damage and displacement in New Hampshire, where National Guard troops kept order and evacuees fled to shelters.
Southwestern New Hampshire took the brunt of the flooding. In Keene, 4 to 6 feet of water submerged a third of the city, forcing nearly 1,000 people to evacuate their homes. In Alstead, flood-waters flowed over a dam early in the day in a nearly 5-foot-high torrent that damaged more than a dozen bridges spanning Route 123, isolating the town, authorities said.
New Hampshire Governor John Lynch declared a state of emergency and dispatched 500 National Guard members to hard-hit areas, including 100 to Keene. ”This is the worst damage they’ve seen from flooding in 25 years in New Hampshire,” he said.

What a bad year this has been, weather wise…
*UPDATE:
Keene is the sixth largest city in N.H. and there are now 4 confirmed dead. One guys decided to go Kayaking in a flooded river. Rescuers attempted to save him, but the current washed him away.

In five days sombady may notice all of the water at the federal level.

I’m going to visit a client in NH in 2 weeks. What’s a fun thing to do on a Wednesday night in Manchester?

  • Seth Williams

Oh, here’s something NH has going for it: no sales tax and no income tax.

  • richard

Never said they did, just wanted to point out that it would take 5 days for somebody at the federal level to notice the water.

The feds are there to help with the cleanup. (I’m from Grand Forks)

Seth Williams: Where in N.H.? It could be that Keene isn’t the third largest in the state… though, I am pretty sure that it was, right after Concord and Manchester (even though these are, essentially, the same city)…

  • Seth Williams

Really? Are there lots of farms there? I must admit true ignorance of that part of the country. I’ve been all over America (maybe to about 35 or 40 of the states), but not the upper midwest or the northwest.

In NH we make lots of…um…maple syrup. So I guess you can say that NH flavors the nation’s pancakes.

    Forgot one thing…..

I am sure they will scream for Federal dollars soone enough.

Thanks Jay, I’ll ammed the post… It may have just been something they said in Keene… At that point in my life, statistics mattered very little to me…

I grew up in Portsmouth (and as any good New Englander knows, that’s pronounced like “Port Smith”), and lived in Dover as an adult (I know, not exactly a big move). I’m fairly sure that there’s about 24,000 people in Portsmouth.

Rob: what’s this North Dakota you’re always on about? :P

Candle-pin bowling. Drinking at pubs… not much else…

‘John Lynch declared a state of emergency and dispatched 500 National Guard members to hard-hit areas, including 100 to Keene.’

I know this may be incomprehensible but maybe they are actually prepared to deal with the emergency on the state level and don’t need to scream and cry on TV for Federal assistance.

As a New Hampshirite, I appreciate the sympathy and praise, but I gotta stand with the others on the correction — Keene’s behind Manchester, Nashua, Concord, Rochester, and Dover for population, coming in 6th. And of the last I heard, the death toll’s up to 4, with 4 more still missing.

Yeah, it’s ugly. But we’ll muddle through — and with FEMA’s help, whom our governor (a Democrat) has been quick to praise.

I grew up in NH too. I think that Keene isn’t the 3rd largest.

That’s terrible news, whatever it’s size rank.

This is really something. No blame on anyone. Tragic.

Rob: what’s this North Dakota you’re always on about?

On the place that feeds the nation, of course. ;-)

Really? Are there lots of farms there?

“Lots” is an understatement. That’s pretty much all the state is.

Oh, here’s something NH has going for it: no sales tax and no income tax.

That’s how it was in Alaska too. In Alaska, though, you also got a check just for living there.

I sometimes wish I still did live there.

Where is this “New Hampshire” place again?
    ;-)
