Firefox Update

Firefox continues to grow…

LiveScience.com – Microsoft Corp.’s share of the U.S. browser market has slipped below 90 percent as the Firefox browser continues to grow in popularity, according to independent tracking by WebSideStory.
Firefox, an open-source browser collectively developed by the Internet community under the Mozilla Foundation, had a 6.8 percent share as of April 29, an increase from 3.0 percent since WebSideStory began tracking Firefox separately in October.
Other browsers based on the Mozilla code, including America Online Inc.’s Netscape, had a 2.2 percent share, while Microsoft’s Internet Explorer share was 89 percent, a drop from 95 percent in June.
The figures are for all operating systems combined. On computers running Microsoft’s Windows, Internet Explorer has a 91 percent share, down from 97 percent in June.
Outside the United States, Germany is among the leading adopters of Firefox, with a 23 percent share, compared with 69 percent for Internet Explorer.
“They just seem to be averse to Microsoft products and really interested relatively in these open-source products,” said Geoff Johnston, a WebSideStory analyst.
Microsoft is strong in Asia, with Internet Explorer commanding a share of 94 percent in Japan and 98 percent in China.

I’d be interested if Rob had stats for the number of users who use Firefox while accessing his site…
And if you haven’t yet, go get Firefox. It’s great.

I use Firefox only. Once in a great while I hit a website that hates it. I have to use Explorer. Firefox’s success could be it’s downfall. I don’t get viruses with Firefox much like I did with Explorer. If Firefox becomes too pervasive the virus writers will move their focus. Firefox is pretty big (Megs) compared to Explorer. Too big to leave resident. It loads a little slower than I wish. But it’s heads and tails above uncle Bills esploder.

Another nice alternative is Opera. Free with ads. Large support community. A whole suite of apps.
I still like firefox better, though.

Here are some stats from this month on Rob’s site and my site.

    sayanythingblog.com
    Internet Explorer – 66.7%
    Firefox – 19.6%
    Safari – 3.3%
    Mozilla – 3.0%
    Opera – 0.8%

    txfx.net
    Internet Explorer – 56.2%
    Firefox – 24.2%
    Mozilla – 3.8%
    Safari – 3.7%
    Opera – 1.3%

My blog has a partial focus on WordPress and blog-specific topics, so that’s likely why I have a lower IE readership, as those sort of people tend to use the “good” browsers.

Are those unique visitors or overall hits?

Unique visitors. Once per 24 hours. Right Rob?

I got it from the same source (they’re publicly available). And yes, based on hits, so that could be skewed a bit. I get about 22,000 hits a day, so it could be skewed by a little bit.

Blog readers overall tend to be more tech savvy than the average web user. And those stats about 90% market share for IE may not be based on access logs, but on surveys… I don’t know.

Are those unique visitors or overall hits?

I’m guessing the latter because of Rob’s comment….

Well, I’m not sure where Mark got his numbers from but my Webstats counter is showing 19.4% for Firefox and that number is based on hits, not unique visitors.

Say Anything gets about 55,000 hits/day.

Our stats are also probably a little skewed in that you and I both use Firefox, Mark, and we visit our own sites in the course of blogging quite a bit. I’m loading Say Anything a lot throughout the day to make sure posts look ok and to respond to comments. I’m sure you’re the same way.
