Fine, Let Them Marry

The gay marriage advocates have won their legal battle in Massachusetts. A marriage between gays is now a recognized union in that state.

Honestly, I'm a bit perturbed that a small minority of the population was able to change the law to fit their needs without the consent of the majority of the population. All it took was some good press coverage and a couple of liberal judges. This judgment will echo in other states where legal battles over gay marriage are also being fought. Like it or not, gay marriage is here to stay.

Never mind the fact that our divorce courts, already overburdened, are going to be flooded with new divorce cases. Not to mention even more confusing custody battles. But the minority got their way. I guess that's what is important.

Its not so much that gay marriage in and of itself bothers me. I could care less what two grown, consenting adults do to one another behind closed doors. What bothers me is how they did it. Rights like this should be granted by legislators and voters, not judges. I also worry about the children that are going to be taken into these marriages. No, I don't think gays are inherent molesters, but I don't think we know nearly enough about how being raised in a homosexual home will effect a child's overall health.

But I guess we're beyond that now.

We probabily are beyond that now, so are the Swedish, and they have found gay marriages are more likely to end in a divorce. Bet you won’t here that in any of the US press, at least not loudly.

Study finds that homosexuals who marry in Sweden, where it’s legal, are more likely to divorce than heterosexuals.

“A Swedish study of gay unions finds that most homosexuals aren’t interested in getting married — and that those who do wed have a much higher rate of divorce than heterosexuals.

Researchers found that of the unions registered in Sweden — where gay marriage is legal — only one-half of 1 percent involved homosexuals. What’s more, married gays and lesbians were about three times more likely to divorce than the average heterosexual couple.”

Here is the link to the study in pdf format.

I think the taxpayers are going to feel the fallout from this when we have to start shouldering the burden for extra judges, court time and child services.

Not to mention the fact that we’ve also opened the door for the polygamists to come in and demand marriage rights as well.

Here’s what to expect next:

  • Homosexual couple legally married in Massachusetts moves to another state, then sues to have their marriage recognized by that state.
  • Homosexual couples who send their children (adopted or otherwise) to public schools will demand to have those schools introduce material showing homosexual marriage and adoption as a “normal, healthy thing.”
  • Homosexual couples will seek to be recognized by their religious denominations, and those who refuse will be critised as “intolerent.”
  • Once the unions are generally accepted, public outcry will ultimately lead to the stripping of the tax-exempt status now enjoyed by religious organizations.

I agree with all of those statements.
