Filibuster: Republicans On The Ropes Or Desperate Democrats Looking To Please Their Base?
1:36am
I think that’s the big question as Harry Reid looks to deploy his filibuster gambit.
A lot of people are casting this as Democrats fighting the good fight against beleaguered Republicans, but remember that it’s the Democrats who are in charge of this Congress that has approval numbers in the teens. It’s Nancy Pelosi who is facing an (admittedly unserious) challenge from anti-war candidate Cindy Sheehan. It’s Hillary Clinton who is getting booed by liberal audiences. It’s Russ Feingold who is getting lambasted by Daily Kos types for not supporting the impeachment of the President.
There’s no doubt about it, Democrats are in hot water with their base. And that’s what this filibuster is all about.
Harry Reid knows that the Republicans have the votes to block his “bring our losers home” amendment. He also knows that even if it should pass by some miracle, the President will just veto it anyway. So in the end, this is all just posturing by a bunch of desperate liberals wanting to appear to have accomplished something.
