Fighting Sioux Petition Events- Thursday Feb 2 – Monday Feb 6

Written By:

As the deadline approaches for the referendum petition to “Repeal the Repeal” of the law which protected the Fighting Sioux name and logo from retirement, the Spirit Lake Committee for Understanding and Respect and Fighting Sioux Ballot Measures committee have announced several signing events being held statewide to help ensure they surpass the 13,500 signatures required to place the repeal of Senate Bill 2370 on the ballot at the June election. If enough signatures are secured and turned in to Secretary of State Al Jaeger on February 7, Senate Bill 2370 will be nullified until the voters of North Dakota can weigh in at the June 12th primary election. This means that the original law passed by the North Dakota legislature preventing retirement of the Fighting Sioux name and logo would be effective again, and the University of North Dakota’s athletic teams would once again be known as Fighting Sioux.

The committees have jointly set up the following events:

Thursday, Feb 2nd

West Acres Mall
Food Court
10:00 am – 9:00 pm

Thursday, Feb 2nd – Friday, February 3rd

Bismarck

Old Main Street Cafe

Friday, Feb 3rd – Sunday, Feb 5th

In addition, both committees are pursuing an initiated measure to add an amendment to the ND Constitution stating that the University of North Dakota’s intercollegiate athletic teams shall be known as the Fighting Sioux. They need 27,000 signatures to get this measure on the ballot for the November 2012 election. If successful, Fighting Sioux will be entered into the state constitution. These petitions will also be available at the above events.

Information on petition activities can be monitored at Facebook, Twitter, and at www.savethefightingsioux.com.
