Federal Agents Raid Home Of Millionaire Welfare Recipient
1:00am
For years now the left has been trying to debunk the “myth of the welfare queen,” a term coined during the Reagan administration to denote someone living high on the hog off the sweat of the taxpayer’s brow. According to liberals, that sort of thing doesn’t really happen.
Except, it does. A particularly egregious case has just come to light in the Seattle area:
According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the couple collected as much as $135,000 in housing assistance alone.
If a case of fraud this egregious can slip through the cracks, how much more waste is out there? But to be clear, this isn’t just about fraud and abuse. This speaks to a fundamental, systemic problem with government programs and mission creep. This woman received $1,200 a month in housing assistance. That’s more than enough to pay most people’s mortgages. How is that amount appropriate even if this woman had been truthful about her circumstances?
A safety net that helps people who truly cannot help themselves is one thing. A system that allows some citizens to live at the expense of others is quite another.
