Fargo Forum Endorses Rick Berg

Fargo Forum's Ivory Tower
Written By:

The editorial board of the Fargo Forum has endorsed Rick Berg for US Senate today. The endorsement is being propagated through all Forum Communication-owned publications in the state.

Their reasoning for endorsing Berg? He’s a conservative with a limited government philosophy, and Heitkamp isn’t::

Berg is an advocate of smaller government, which translates into less government intrusion into private lives and private businesses. It’s a philosophy nurtured during his years as a state legislator. It has worked for North Dakota, and Berg believes he can use his state’s success as an example for the U.S. Senate.

Heitkamp’s view is different. She sincerely believes in a more activist role for government in everything from environmental regulation to health care. Her beliefs about how government should interact with states and the governed are increasingly out of step with her state.

That’s a strange calculation to make for an editorial board that, on a daily basis, espouses anything but a limited government agenda. This editorial board has been a fierce supporter of government economic intervention and micromanaging nanny-statist policies and, in the past, has given its hearty endorsement to state budgets raising spending at dizzying speeds.

The Fargo Forum, to put it simply, is not a conservative publication by any stretch of the imagination. So why did they endorse Berg? It’s not about ideology. It’s about who will win. The folks at the Forum see Rick Berg as winning the Senate race, and they want to be seen endorsing the winner.
