Family Would Like Obama To Stop Wearing The Bracelet He Mentioned during The Debate

By now I think we’ve all identified Obama’s “I’ve got a bracelet too” moment as one of the most inane parts of the first Presidential debate. But yesterday it was noticed that Obama had to humorously check the name on the bracelet when talking about the soldier it represented because he didn’t remember the name. But now there’s more, as its come to light that the family of the soldier asked Obama to stop wearing the bracelet.

Shockingly, however, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan Jopek, the young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside bomb in 2006, recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family had asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son’s name on it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family. …

Brian Jopek: Because of some of the negative feedback she’s gotten on the Internet, you know Internet blogs, you know people accusing her of… or accusing Obama of trying to get votes doing it… and that sort of thing.
Radio Host Moberg: Yeah
Jopek: She has turned down any subsequent interviews with the media because she just didn’t want it to get turned into something that it wasn’t. She had told me in an email that she had asked, actually asked Mr. Obama to not wear the bracelet any more at any of his public appearances.

Anything for a political edge, I guess.

Sounds like a little kid “hitback” to me. She didn’t want him to exploit her son’s death for political purposes, but now it’s OK? Bullshit.

Apparently only republicans have the right to wear a fallen soldiers bracelet.

Another bullshit “rights” argument from a leftie. In fact, she didn’t give him the bracelet to use as a political prop. This is in the report. Quit making things up.

Agreed, but Rob has moved Recent Reader Entries to the front page. Does that make a difference?

Sgt. Ryan David Jopek’s mother’s most recent response said that she felt that Obama’s reference to the bracelet was appropriate after McCain invoked his bracelet.

    OBAMA’S BRACELET GETS A CODA

The mother of a Wisconsin soldier who died in Iraq says she was “ecstatic” when Senator Obama mentioned during Friday’s debate the bracelet she gave him in honor of her son. Tracy Jopek of Merrill, Wis., told the Associated Press yesterday she was honored that Mr. Obama remembered Sergeant Ryan David Jopek, who was killed in 2006 by a roadside bomb. Ms. Jopek criticized Internet reports suggesting Mr. Obama exploited her son for political purposes. “I don’t understand how people can take that and turn it into some garbage on the Internet,” she said. Ms. Jopek acknowledged e-mailing the Obama campaign in February asking that the presidential candidate not mention her son in speeches or debates. But she said Mr. Obama’s mention on Friday was appropriate because he was responding after Senator McCain said a soldier’s mother gave him a bracelet.

    Rob,

You really should give a hat tip and a link when someone (like robert108) posts the same substantial information ahead of you in the readers blogs

The number of duplicate posts seems to have increased a lot lately; which is a good thing, btw.

Perhaps you ought not to read Jonah Goldberg too much. Ooops, mother of slain soldier honored to have Obama talk about her son.

Apparently only republicans have the right to wear a fallen soldiers bracelet. This mother was accosted on the internet from rightie blogs for giving Obama the bracelet. Classless!
