Even In Unsure Economic Times, Guns Are A Priority For Citizens

North Dakota Game and Fish biologist Doug Leier posts on the reader blog about gun sales and boat sales. He notes that gun sales are up, while boat sales are down.
That’s an interesting contrast.
Boats are undoubtedly a luxury for the vast majority of Americans. For most of us, boats aren’t for anything but fun. We don’t need them to get by on a day-to-day basis. So when the economy weakens, and when we stop feeling confident in our financial standings, things like boats are among the first places to cut costs.
Guns, you might think, are another luxury where fearful citizens might cut costs. But gun sales have been way, way up for months now mostly driven by fears among bitter gun clingers about tough new gun control laws under President Obama.
That tells us something about where most citizens prioritize gun ownership, doesn’t it?

I wonder what the public might know?

We conservatives are very tolerant people, but, when pushed hard enough…..”my cold dead hands”

Most people I know that have bought any guns since the election are of the “I wanted one of these eventually and better get it now while I still can” mindset.

Kinda sucks for them as they are paying artifically inflated prices. They are also assuming the next version of the assault weapons ban will grandfather in everyone like the last one did, which isn’t guaranteed.

Could the artifically inflated prices and surge in sales be better than a congressional stimulus?

personally I say yes because the people buying guns or a product the stimlus package has nothing to do with simulating the economy.

Not just gun sales – ammunition sales are way up also. Very hard to get what was quite common (9mm, .45 ACP, .223 Remington)ammo around here these days. I waited for 7 weeks for an order with Cabela’s recently. Pre Hope-a-Dope what I ordered was typically shipped the next day. People are stocking up for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is fear of tax hikes on ammo. I read an article recently where Obama and company are kicking around a 500% increase on the sales tax on ammo (yikes!). Takes target practice to a much higher priced day of fun.

Moszer – Yeah, reloading is an option, but even the cost of bullets and powder is going through the roof. There’s also the time factor involved – takes a whole lot of time to reload a few thousand rounds, time that I can use making money instead! Plus your last point is valid, every reloader I know blows off rounds at about a 4x multiple of me, so I can’t say they’re saving money, but they may be having more fun.

Solution: Load your own. It cost about half as store bought.

You end up shooting 4 times as much though so it might be a net negative :)

Boats aren’t likely to be banned or severely restricted (other than monetarily) by the new administration.

Rob, that’s exactly what was going through my mind as reading: guns are a source of personal protection AND recreational outlet. Where boats server little beyond a seasonal diversion from working.

I have a 40 on lay away because I don’t trust the Dem’s with our gun rights.
