Even After Beating And Murdering Protesters, Iranians Still Invited To 4th Of July Celebrations

Because nothing invokes the true spirit of the freedom, liberty and independence enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the founding of America like representatives of a murderous theocracy.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States said Monday its invitations were still standing for Iranian diplomats to attend July 4 celebrations at US embassies despite the crackdown on opposition supporters.
President Barack Obama’s administration said earlier this month it would invite Iran to US embassy barbecues for the national holiday for the first time since the two nations severed relations following the 1979 Islamic revolution.
“There’s no thought to rescinding the invitations to Iranian diplomats,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.
“We have made a strategic decision to engage on a number of fronts with Iran,” Kelly said. “We tried many years of isolation, and we’re pursuing a different path now.”

The message Iran is being sent: Go ahead and murder political dissenters in the streets. When you’re done, Obama would like you to come on over for a BBQ.
Wonderful.

Iran is a member of OPEC, and they have the 3d largest oil reserves in the world. If they cut off production, it would raise the price of oil significantly. In fact, during the last year or so, they’ve exported more oil than in the last 30 years. It’s true that they have to import their gasoline, but probably not for long, because they say that they will be self-sufficient within a few years. Also they have the Strait of Hormuz, which is a major passageway for oil transportation that they could cut off and disrupt everything.

In other words, I wouldn’t downplay their importance in the world of oil if I were you.

Didn’t the left accuse Bush of being stubborn and headstrong in spite of the evidence?

In Iran the demand for democracy is strong and broad … The regime in Tehran must heed the democratic demands of the Iranian people, or lose its last claim to legitimacy.

Not only is Iran a virtual non-entity in the oil export market, they have to import their own gasoline, due to their lack of investment in refineries. They are very vulnerable, economically, and the West should take advantage of that, especially the US. If we only had a leader in the White House…

Also, our economy is very dependant on Iran because of oil.

Not true. There has been a ban on the import of Iranian produced crude oil into the US since 1979.

Also, according the the Energy Information Agency Iran currently produces roughly 3.8 million barrels of crude per day, or less than 5% of the world’s oil production. Less than half that amount is exported, which is why the threat of any sort of general strike in Iran could drop exports and the foreign exchange earned by those exports to zero overnight.

Funny, we have been and are still doing deals with many oppresive regimes in the world, including China, but I don’t hear you guys belly-aching about that. If we cut ties with every regime that silences the voices of its peoples, then we would have to cut off about half the world. We’ve tried that kind of approach with Bush, and the world didn’t get any better. In addition, the problem in Iran is internal and there has been no direct threat to us. Lastly, even though we cheer on the side of justice and peace in Iran, we still are forced to deal with the current ruling power which plays a major role in the bigger picutre, such as regional stability. Obama has to keep his campaign promise to the public to take a more diplomatic approach.

So you can say that a few factors are how much progress they are to liberalizing themselves, and our economic dependence on them. I don’t know if you’ve read, but a difference between this situation and previous ones in Iran is that, many high-level officials are now defying the unquestionable Supreme Leader, which means that there has been a somewhat major shift happening. If it keeps going this direction, then we may witness another revolution in all levels. Also, our economy is very dependant on Iran because of oil.

Well the fourth of July is a great time to get together with family and friends. No wonder Obama wants to hang out with these Iranian thugs.

It’s a matter of degree, Chris, and situation.

China is (believe it or not) slowly but surely liberalizing. They’re a long way off yet, but they’re improving. So walking away from them now (as if we could with our economy so closely intertwined with theirs) would be stupid.

Iran, on the other hand, could be punished by walking away from their nuclear talks.

This is all a lot more complicated than your default, knee-jerk liberal talking points encompass.
