European Union Wants To End Sex As A Sales Tool

Sex sells.  We know this.  The advertising people around the world have made an industry out of using scantily-clad women (and to a lesser extent men) to sell everything from spark plugs and tractors to consumer electronics.

But now the European Union wants all that to end:

MEPs want TV regulators in the EU to set guidelines which would see the end of anything deemed to portray women as sex objects or reinforce gender stereotypes.

This could potentially mean an end to attractive women advertising perfume, housewives in the kitchen or men doing DIY.

Such classic adverts as the Diet Coke commercial featuring the bare-chested builder, or Wonderbra’s “Hello Boys” featuring model Eva Herzigova would have been banned.

The new rules come in a report by the EU’s women’s rights committee.

Does it make me happy that advertising which appeals to our basest, lustful instincts is so effective?  Not particularly.  But there’s no doubt that it does work, and to deny advertisers the freedom to use it seems rather stupid.

I have a feeling that if it were a Christian group in Europe demanding that racy advertising be regulated out of existence in the name of moral decency they wouldn’t be listening.  But banning such advertising in the name of political correctness?  They’re right on board with that.

I don’t particularly enjoy the idea of walking with my daughters down a sidewalk that is bracketed with racy advertising featuring half-naked models, but I enjoy even less the idea of the government using racy advertising to use racy advertising as an excuse to exert further control over the media.  Which includes advertising.

How are they going to do this in Europe?  I remember in 1989, walking into the shopping area of Mayen, Germany, and seeing a poster promoting skin cream.

The model wasn’t half naked.

Good area, business district, kids walking by on their way to school.  Broad daylight.  It wasn’t the only advertisement I saw that summer that secured a letter of protest from the swimsuit-maker’s union, either.

It makes you wonder what planet these busybodies are from to think you can get sex out of EUROPEAN advertising.

That one woman holding up that sign won’t ever have to worry about herself being used as a sex tool.

haha, zsa zsa I was thinking the same thing! lol

A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.

"To portray Women as sex objects or reinforce gender stereotypes."… goes too far.
“People” are sex objects.. It’s natural.
Gender, “Has” stereotypes.. also natural.

Where the media goes too far in my opinion, is exsessive nudity, foul language and overtly “Adult” themes in and on the Public Airways.
And, they’re so arrogant and crass about it.

It’s never been more immportant to teach your children “Class”.
Don’t let the Schools do it.

That’s right; women are not decorations!
They are waitresses, who bring breasts, thighs and beer to my table.

I agree.

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.” ~Theodore Roosevelt

I dunno.

It seems the girls who look hot, enjoy being models, enjoy the attention, the money, the perks, the attention, the power they have over men, and did I mention the attention?

Sounds like the Protesting Prudences are just jealous of stuff like, well, all of the above.

...for great justice

yeah I think as one with a libertarian mindset I have to agree with Rob here. I am Christian and I too, disapprove of our hyper-sexualized culture, however I feel that’s not a battle that can be won with laws and politics but rather, won in the culture war. How that happens- prayer, fasting, and using your dogone voice, getting off the tube, all that. But it certianly won’t be won by putting guns to peoples’ heads and throwing them in jail for breaking the moral police’ “laws”.

No one is forcing them to work there. This kinda reminds me of the anti war individuals who claim to support our troops. Our troops were not drafted. They chose to go. This is what choice is all about.

Damn...I thought my wife stopped working at Hooters when we got married.

anti war individuals who claim to support our troops

I’m anti-war, and I support my troops. You don’t understand why I do, but that’s ok- I’ll explain. One of my best buds is an active-duty Marine who respects me and my opinions. I am also a member of the Patriot Guard, saluting and celebrating the homecoming of our soldiers. How can you be anti-war and still support the troops? Easy, it means having the upmost respect for the troops’ sacrifice REGARDLESS of what our puppet politicians order them to do. To me, the real heroes are the men and women who do the dirty work, not the men who sit behind new oak desks and have a title to go with their name. To me, being antiwar and supporting the troops means still waving that flag when they come home, putting aside my personal opinion about the war and celebrating their sacrifice. It means THAT, rather than spitting and yelling at them, like the protesters of Vietnam.

That’s how I’m anti-war and supporting the troops. It’s the simple understanding that the troops really have nothing to do with the decision-making on whether we go to war or not. Because of this, many people who “support the troops because they support the war” are in the end, a load of crap. Why? Well according to my active-duty Marine friends, a stupid yellow ribbon magnet just doesn’t cut it. It means writing letters, supporting them with encouragement, and sending them personal memorabilia they’ll never forget. It means praying for their safety everyday regardless of personal opinions. Tell me, how many who “support the troops via supporting the war” with their little yellow ribbons? Not very many at all.

Mike LP, I appreciate your explanation. Thank you!  We still have people spitting on the troops coming back from Iraq. The code pinkers are out in full force. No one really wants War. BUT it happens!
