European Union Spending $152 Million To Re-Invent The Wheel

The politicians in the EU have decided to spend $152 million of their constituent’s tax dollars on developing a rival for Google.
The problem is that we’ve already got a Google. Why does the EU need to develop another one, if that’s even possible?
I’m all for competition, but why not let the market develop a competitor for Google? And if the market doesn’t produce a Google rival, does that not indicate that Google is doing a good job of meeting demand for its services as is?

    Hey,
if the socialists want to go after the socialists, that’s fine by me

Hey, it’s the socialist way. If at first you don’t succeed, through more government money at it. Some other examples: Airbus, public schools, the British National Health Service, et cetera.

There exsist alternatives to every one of googles services; search, storage, email, maps… It’s not like that competition is hard to find on the internet, it’s just a url click away.

    What loons…

How did that European GPS system work out, anyway?

    Not so good.

Oh, and I forgot the biggest example: the UN.

Sphag nails it. There are plenty of options out there, but google is popular because they do a pretty good job for the consumer.

Who wants to bet that this subsidized euro search will be worth a darn? I bet it can’t even find “fromage”.

Much more practical reason why EU’s new “technology” won’t work:

    exhibit 1:

    g o o g l e (0.6 seconds to type)

    exhibit 2:

    q u e a (wait, was that a before e?) BACKSPACE BACKSPACE a r BACKSPACE BACKSPACE a e r o

Why? Isn’t Google anti American enough for the euros?
