“Europe was not as outraged by Auschwitz as by Guantanamo Bay”

True, very true:

He’ll probably apologize for the remark later but Democratic Congressman Tom Lantos of California, the only Holocaust survivor in Congress, told it like it is to some Dutch politicians: “Europe was not as outraged by Auschwitz as by Guantanamo Bay.”

The liberal Lantos is far from a friend of Gitmo. The Dutch sent these politicians here to bitch about Gitmo. No reporter attended a meeting between the Dutch and the congressman, but AP wrote a story based on Green Party legislator Mariko Peters.

The Dutch are threatening to remove their 1,600 troops from Afghanistan to protest Gitmo. Dutch politicians face growing problems with Islamic youths and likely fear a L’Intifada like France suffered in 2005.

Peters said: “We have to close Guantanamo because it symbolizes for me everything that is wrong with this war on terror.”

To which Lantos apparently replied: “Europe was not as outraged by Auschwitz as by Guantanamo Bay”

He also said: “You have to help us, because if it was not for us you would now be a province of Nazi Germany.”

Good for him.

Thanks to Don Suber.

The Dutch have a problem which they cannot admit to—if they did they would be shown to be spineless as jellyfish.  After the VanGogh murder things got ugly there, and the woman legislator Hirsi was threatened and under protection—she had the guts to speak out against militant Islam.  She now lives in the U.S.  I have no love for Lantos, but I bet that he gave them “what for” and they knew they were had.

That was then. This is now.

Many of the Dutch, Swedes and other European countries supported the NAZIs and racism was common place.

I am more appalled by Guantanamo as well because Americans, who would use introducing Democracy as an excuse for Iraq, are doing it.

“Europe was not as outraged by Auschwitz as by Guantanamo Bay.”

How can Europe be outraged by Auschitz when Europeans were themselves trying to survive? Just empty rhetoric on the senator’s part. How can one express outrage on an empty stomach? And how many Europeans knew of the attrocities?
Did the Americans (lets say a resident of kansas) know of Auschitz during WWII? Any evidence of outrage here at home during the war? Once again just empty rhetoric and cheap point scoring.

Democracy is the excuse for what, exactly, in Iraq?  Blowing kids’ heads off for fun as Stark suggested?

My goodness but you’re a nut, EWS.

The purpose of government shouldn’t be to do good, but simply to refrain from doing evil.

Guess who is lodged at Guantanamo, ews.  Terrorists suspected of blowing off kid’s heads.

One of the most important talents for success in politics is the ability to make utter nonsense sound not only plausible but inspiring. Barack Obama has that talent. We will be lucky if we escape the catastrophes into which other countries have been led by leaders with that same charismatic talent.

Holocaust deniers live and breath, in the Democrat Party. Lantos will be pilloried and driven from the Party for this blasphemy against Democrat Party dogma.

ews is the perfect example, e singing backup. Hey, e, Nazis didn’t kill Greeks either, right?

As for your lie about outrage in America, thousands of people worked tirelessly to tell the world what was going on at the hands of the Nazis. Jew haters such as you and ews fought them tooth&nail. And you continue to screech that Jooos got what they deserved, and work to finish Hitler’s Final Solution even today.

I dunno…Lantos has some pretty good liberal bona fides!
However, the say that a conservative is a liberal who got mugged! Maybe Tom will open his eyes to the types of folks who are trying to co-opt his party and leave of his own free will?

Don’t the Dutch have bigger fish to fry: last week the French actually accused them of being cowards. You know your country is in bad, bad, bad shape when the Frenchies can get away with such a remark.

“Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go.”

My point 2Hotel9, is that all of Europe suffered under the nazis. And yes a lot of Greeks died. But given the absence of mass communications, or any sort of communications in occupied Europe, I fail to see how the average European would know what was going on in nazi Germany and be outraged. As for Lantos’ lie about outrage in Europe, thousands of people worked tirelessly to tell the world what was going on at the hands of the Nazis.
Now cut off the crap about Joo hating. Try that tactic on someone else. It does not work on me.

ellinas on October 29, 2007 at 03:29 pm

...all of Europe suffered under the nazis.

Untrue.  Not Italy, for one.

If govt control of the economy were the way to go, the Soviet Union would be the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world.

Thanks to Obama, America remains the only country where it is illegal to drill our own oil!

Didn’t Italy suffer under an occupation at the end of the war?

...And all of Europe suffered from the French Empire of Napoleon, and the Romans before that, etc.  Tom should be ashamed of himself, being a Hungarian, but it seems that he collaborated.

The subject is being oppressed by the Nazis, and Italy was an ally of the Nazis.

The people of Italy certainly suffered under the boot of fascism.  As do all people forced to live under totalitarian regimes.
