Elephant Woman

This is why I go to a barber.

This Is London – She had hoped to look like Beyonce Knowles.
But what should have been a relaxing trip to the hairdresser turned into a nightmare for 22-year-old Ebony Glanville.
The student suffered what appeared to be an allergic reaction to hair dye used during her trip to the salon. Her scalp, face and eyes swelled severely within a few hours of the treatment.
Today, almost two weeks later, Ms Glanville is still taking steroid medication. She now plans to sue the salon she claims is responsible.
She said: “I left the salon at 8pm on the Friday and the next day my scalp started itching and I saw blood and dye on my headscarf.
“I went to hospital and they gave me some tablets, but when I woke up on Monday the top of my head was three times bigger than normal and my eyes were swollen as well.
“I looked like Frankenstein’s monster. I could hardly see anything and I was really scared because I truthfully thought I was going to stay like that. I thought I was going to go blind.
“I wanted to look like Beyonce not ET.” She added: “My mum calls me the Elephant Man. I have hardly spoken to anyone because I could see from the corner of my eye that people were giving me funny looks.”

Here’s a before shot of Ms. Glanville:

And here’s a shot after her hairdresser got done with her:

That’s nasty. I hope its not permanent.
I’m not sure the hairdresser should be held responsible for this however. Can it be proved that the hairdresser should have known that one of their products could do this to somebody? Is their a history of allergic reactions to the products used in Ms. Glanville’s hair? Was the manufacturer of the product aware of potential reactions such as this?
There’s a lot of questions that have to be answered before one could determine whether or not Ms. Glanville has a good case. If she does have a case, however, I hope the judge throws the book at whoever is responsible.

I feel very sorry for this lady. I’m glad she took pictures of her ordeal. Now for possible facts. EVERY hair chemical product has instructions on performing a pretest of their product on a subject at least 24 hours BEFORE performing the service on the client. NOW if the hairdresser DID NOT do this, I hope she has paid her malpractice insurance. She needs to go back for continuing education or find another career. I hope this lady makes a complete recovery. PS – I do hair.

I had the same thing happen to me on the 29th October 2004, i went to A&E on the 30th and they told me to wash my hair and the swelling should go down!!! By the 31st (yes halloween!) my head was huge so i went back and they kept me in. I’ve took legal action against the hairdresser but they insurers are doing everything possible to make things difficult for me. For anyone going through the same don’t give in (I think more should be done to prevent this happening or more information is needed, even the hospital didn’t know what to do with me!!

Allergies happen. I happen to be alergic to Ibuprofin – I get the same kind of fleshy swelling in random locations. My Dad has the same problem.

(But I didn’t sue…I just use Tylenol instead.)
