Electoral Map Favors Democrats, Has McCain On Defense?

I’ve seen this story everywhere today, and it raises a couple of questions for me.

First, what good does looking at a map of electoral outcomes from the 2004 election do us?  Especially given how bad the media was in general at predicting the outcome of that race?  If you’d done nothing more than read the headlines and news articles leading up to the vote in November 2004 you’d think that John Kerry had a lock on things, yet Bush won handily.

Are we really to believe that the media has an accurate take on the outcome of this election even before the Democrats have their final candidate picked?  Even before the national conventions and the advent of the general election?

Or is this really more about media liberals reassuring themselves that they’ve still got a chance whoever emerges from the Hillary vs. Obama dustup?

I’ve heard of comfort food before, but I think this is the first time I’ve run across comfort journalism.
