Eight Charged In UK Terror Plot

Awesome…

Eleven suspects in the alleged UK airport terror plot have been charged.
Police have also revealed that they found bomb-making equipment and martyrdom videos during their investigations.
They said eight people had been charged with conspiracy to murder and preparing acts of terrorism.
The three other suspects are charged with other offences under the Terrorism Act. One of these is a 17-year-old.
One woman has been released without charge and eleven others are still in custody.
Metropolitan Police deputy assistant commissioner Peter Clarke said the investigation was “immense” and would go on for many months.
“I would like to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to keep you safe … however we must be realistic,” he said.
He added: “The threat from terrorism is real. It is here, it is deadly and it is enduring.”

There have been a lot of questions about just how imminent these attacks were. Given that the police have found “martyrdom videos” for these suspects I think we can conclude that they were pretty dang imminent.
A martyrdom video is a recording Islamic suicide attackers make of themselves declaring their fealty to their cause and explaining why they’re doing what they’re doing (i.e. blowing themselves up to attack the “great satan” of the west, etc., etc.). They make these recordings just before the launch the attack itself. If some of the attacks had already made their videos the attacks were probably coming in weeks not months.

So, jay k, the next time some breaks into your house to rape your child, you just sit their and wait until they actually start raping your child before you get violent. In the mean time, none of my children will be raped in my house while I’m still breathing. If a few people with evil intentions gets killed, I’ll try to remember to not cheer too loudly at their funeral.

You mean . . . it wasn't just a conspiracy by BushCo to detract attention from Ned Lamont's earth-shattering victory?

  • http://www.blogcharm.com/eeore/ eeore

I'm not sure you can draw any conclusion from the martyrdom videos. All we do know is that eleven have been charged.

  • http://www.kenmccracken.blogspot.com/ Ken McCracken

My guess is that people don't record martyrdom videos just for giggles.

Wow, and they didn't have to invade and occupy another country or use warrentless wire taps, nobody's kids died and the Muslim community provided the first tip.

I wonder if bush knows about this.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

    or use warrentless wire taps,

Hey Doctor Clueless, do you have an idea on the laws the British operate under?

This talk about whether an attack was "imminent" or not is just suicidal. If a man with a gun says, "I'm going to shoot you," you don't wait for him to point the gun before you shoot him.

let's see…no working prototype of a bomb that could be smuggled on board an airplane, but they did have…ooooooh…martyrdom videos. i guess it's just easier to make martyrdom videos than bombs. but dammit, if they have videos we need to stop them before they make another video. if only the conservatives had thought this way about michael jackson.

i read kbiels comment. that's just the kind of chicken-hawk thinking that has gotten us where we are in iraq…what suskind called the 1% doctrine. iraq was a…oooooh…grave threat. we had to stop them before the smoking gun was a…ooooooh…mushroom cloud over nyc. haven't you seen the insanity in that thinking yet? you should be way more concerned about how a bunch of rag-tag nut jobs have gotten us to sell out our constitution and our unalienable rights and mortgage our childrens futures. but the big picture can be hard to see when you are so busy following your "leaders" blindly.

  • J.R.

you should be way more concerned about how a bunch of rag-tag nut jobs have gotten us to sell out our constitution and our unalienable rights and mortgage our childrens futures.

What the hell are you talking about?? Are you serious? Tell me something, what unalienable rights have been curtailed since 9/11?? How has your life been effected? Nothing enrages me more when someone spouts such drivel about this administration and it's "assault on the Constitution."

Sorry Jay, I call bullsh*t because I your rights haven't changed.

Well, the Brits did get warrants for everything, right? And they did actually get tips from Muslims, right?

And it was the UK that caught these guys, right?

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Well, the Brits did get warrants for everything,

Did they? Are they required to? I would guess not.

  • WOOF

    Did they?

    Yes

    Are they required to?

    Yes

Faith and begorra, the Bush Admin went to the fisa court. Wonder what they were thinking?

  • zen_less

Hey, I have a lot of porn videos in my house. I guess that means sex is imminent. Whoo hoo!

  • calm down, USA

It could be government powers of arbitrary arrest which people are worried about, J.R. It's a matter of faith on your part that they won't arrest you, and they probably won't, but they are not accountable if they do. That's a problem for a democracy which champions the rights of the individual not, among other things, to be arbitrarily arrested.

    jr…
call bs all you want. warrantless wiretapping limits my free speech. period. you will probably argue that "hey, i'm not doing anything wrong so listen all you want". of course i will call total bs on that argument. beyond that, any time the constitution is weakened we all suffer. to deny that is just short-sighted. a lot of people sacrificed an awful lot to earn these freedoms we enjoy. to wave the white flag and surrender them is downright cowardly. thankfully you weren't at lexington and concord.
    and kbiel…
your rape my child argument is just so ridiculous it defies logic.

At the time the alleged attacks were described as imminent, and airports in the US and UK immediately implemented enhanced "security" measures. This certainly gave the impression that a serious attack was narrowly avoided, and in fact officials said the additional airport security was necessary in case there were other, unaccounted for, terrorists.

Later we hear that the group hadn't yet purchased tickets, and some of them didn't even have passports.

Then we hear they did not seem to have a bomb or the required bomb-making skills.

Now we are left with "martyr videos", and rw bedwetters are holding them up as evidence of an "imminent attack". Please.

I don't doubt that some members of this group were serious about blowing up planes, but the facts that have come out following the initial alert do not support the need for banning water bottles and coffee cups on planes. The alert was for "security theatre" to get everyone's attention.

I'm not convinced it had anything to do with the Lamont's victory, but I'm 100% sure that it was meant to get everyone thinking about 'teh turrists' again. For some parts of the GOP base — the ignorant and cowardly — it works every time.
